At the Drive-In – One Armed Scissor Lyrics 15 years ago
"On another note, I'd like to just go out and say that those of you who condemn everyone else's interpretation, however farfetched, due to a movie reference or a comment by the band, or whatever: how the fuck could you be that obtuse? It's called subjectivity; with music, as with any other art, there is no definitive answer,no unilateral meaning that can be conjured from a couple stanzas and a throw-away comment by the bassist. EVERYTHING is open to interpretation."

Everyone's got a different interpretation, but some people are going out on all sorts of ill-advised limbs, disregarding the song's imagery and descriptive elements and overlaying the rest with their own drowned-in-sorrow, black-eyeliner-ruined-by-tears emo ridiculousness. There's absolutely nothing in the song suggesting it's some ode to self-pity, self-mutilation or self hate.

Spacehog – In The Meantime Lyrics 15 years ago
I get the impression the song's taking the tone of some monumental galactic message to the human race, a calming, peace-bringing signal from a benevolent race that says "We'll meet you eventually when you're ready, and there are amazing things to share between the stars, but in the meantime..."

Given the band's name and its debts to glamrock and predecessors who dealt with big ideas in their music, it seems that's as likely an explanation as any. Particularly the build-up leading to the end of the song, where the vocals get more intense and we hear "...we're just like you, just like you, just like you...we're just like YOU..." as the song ends.

I think the chorus could be the central message to the human race:

We love the all the all of you
Where lands are green and skies are blue
When all in all we're just like you
We love the all of you

From other sentient beings who think it's amazing and wonderful that there's other intelligent life between the long dark expanses of space.
