Okay so I read like so many opions on this song and the Arctic Monkeys in general and I am sooo ready to tell it how it is! First of all, the meaning of this song: This is what I got out of it.....Bands today really arn't, i guess, themselves. Everyone is trying to be someone they're not. "Get of the bandwagon, put down the handbook," - Stop trying to be someone else to make yourself look "cool". Be who you are. I think the "put down the handbook" part is saying stop trying to read up on this subject to act like you know what your talking about cuz ya don't! I wasn't sure if the song was targeted towards just bands or people in general. Either way it's true. I like this song a lot. It has a great guitar and bass (which i can play ;] not to brag, lol) And let me just tell it like it is......The Arctic Monkeys are amazing and I'm not sure what everyone is talking about as far as they are trying to be "American". They're just being themselves....They're doing it like the lyrics say! Plus, dont ya think if they wanted to be American soooo bad then they would drop the accents? I am American and it is suchhh a beautiful change to hear that lovely accent.....Alex Turner <3 But anyways, everyone should stop getting hyped up and just take the song for what it is....Be your self. I'm sure everyone in the U.K. is jumpin on the Arctic Monkeys Bandwagon and Everyone over here in retarted America is jumin on the dumb rap crap bandwagon.....but either way I'm not tryna be someone I'm not. I'm not into rap at all. All my friends are just because its so popular but i am being myself and sticking with the arctic monkeys like ive been doing for the last 3 yearss. OH AND LET ME MAKE ONE MORE THING CLEAR>>> Don't come on a website to discuss Arctic Monkeys and then totally diss them! They are my boyyss....I hate when people talk bad about them. The world is jelous that they can't come up with the genious lyrics Alex Turner and his crew does!!! And they wish they had those beautiful accents and were loved worldwide. First, let me start by saying, I love the 1 minute 19 second intro!!! It's excellent! I really wasn't sure the meaning at first but then I read other peoples views and it really opened up a whole world of meanings to this song for me so I took the time to come up with my own meaning, A lot of people said that maybe Alex was writing this song about the USA....and that really made me think. That's a definate possibility. He might be saying how America is so into going with the trendy music and being cool and doing what everyone is doing that there is no romance (passion i guess) in their music and what they do. When he says, "Theres the truth that they can't see they'd probly like to throw a punch at me," They, referring to America, is stubborn and can't see the truth of how they really are. Then the part about "They'd probly like to throw a punch at me" He's saying how what he's saying might make the U.S. mad but its the truth. And the last part that is really relevant is, "Over there there's broken bones, there's only music so that there's new ringtones, and it don't take no sherlock holmes to see it's a little different around there," -I'm not sure about the broken bones part but I think Alex is saying that over in America there are problems....and then "there's only music so that there's new ringtones" , obviosly it's saying that America's music has no passion. People only write their stupid rap crap to make money and get famous. USA's music has no purpose or passion. And I like the sherlock holmes part where he is basically saying, It's pretty obvious that the USA is different. Then when he says, "Don't get me wrong, oh there's boys in bands And kids who like to scrap with pool cues in their hands," - He's saying, "yea, there are some cool people over there," Well that's really all I got out of the song...and I could be wrong but I don't know. My other idea was that maybe he wasn't writing the song directly about the USA but maybe it's about people everywhere in general.... This song is veryy true either way. It's really describes how life is today with music and trends and stuff. Deffinetly good song!! =] |

This song is pretty clear- It's about a guy (I guess Alex)... and this girl who everyone digs and is tryna impress is coming up to him, then he gets all tense and sweaty and red and stuff, he doesn't know what to say, it's "on the tip of his tounge but he can't deliver it properly," duhhh. I never really thought about the meaning but when I listened to the song to try to figure it out I got it right away. The Arctic Monkeys are cool cuz they put themselves in the funny situation in their songs.... but the situations are so realistic. This song is definetly up there!! =] |

Well now that i made a correction of the lyrics (below), I can actually talk about the song. I always liked this one. It's catchy, the lyrics, the music, everything about it! Alex is basically saying no matter how stupid and girl is, he'll still take her home and get what he wants. funny. "I crumble completely when you cry," that part gives me goosebumps <3 especially cuz its Alex Turner singing it. I like this song a lot. When he says, "I'd probly still adore you with your hands around my neck," I'm pretty sure that he's saying even when this girl drives him crazy he will always love her. everyone is wondering what 505 is....My best guess is the number of an appartment or hotel room. "It seems like once again you've had to greet me with goodbye," I guess here he is saying that everytime he gets to see her it seems like he always has to leave right away and they don't get a lot of time together. And the part about the hands between your thighs....not sexual. I do that when i'm cold or just laying in my bed sad or bored. Anyway, love this song...It's mature of the Arctic Monkeys |

this song is great, as are all of the Arctic Monkeys! When I first started to listen to the Arctic Monkeys like two-three years back this was deff my favorite song!! It's clearly about a girl who gets into these moods with her boyfriend and kind of turns her face and acts like he doesn't care.... but then when he says, "oh when you say i don't care, well of course i do, yeah i clearly do," it makes the song so meaningful. It's cute really. "i see your frown and it's like looking down the barrel of a gun, and it goes off," To me, those words are really powerful. It's saying how it hurts him so much to see his girlfriend frown and get sad and how its like getting shot with a gun in the face...very powerful! To sum things up, I reeally like this song...and i'm an american fan so i really dont get the whole "Mardy Bum" thing....i'm not sure what it means. haha. but as a whole adorable, great, meaningful son! |
