Billy Joel – We Didn't Start the Fire Lyrics 15 years ago
yes, this is, as many people have said, about Billy Joel's life. Alluding to important events and turmoil in the world at the point, as well as the smaller things in life, like the Brooklyn team winning. The tension of the division of Korea, the invention of the hydrogen bomb, Red China, the assination of JFK, the Bay of Pigs, are mentioned, but not emphasised. They're put right along side Elvis Presley, Disneyland, and Einstein. It really gives a feeling of looking at a life instead of a political message. For us, 9-11 was a tragic day, but is that all we're going to remember in our lives? Probably not. We'll remember smaller things that fill up our lives too. Heath Ledger's death, Britany Spear's rollercoaster, how much rap changed, the election of Pres Obama. This is, simply put, just an awesome song.

"how i ABHOR this place... leaves me wretched, RETCHING on all fours"

Definition of abhor (in case you didnt know)

expressing feelings of repugnance
loathing

it never mentions anyone being happy, excluding the line "los angeles, my love" which is sarcastic. Its not a love song, or even a love/hate song. He's seen los angeles and is repulsed, hense the retching, but surrenders, gives in to the inevitable defeat. "los angeles, im yours."

The Decemberists – The Legionnaire's Lament Lyrics 15 years ago
it seems pretty straight forward to me. A French Legionnaire was sent to the desert to fight in a foreign war and becomes stranded and wounded inthe desert. As he bakes and lies dying he thinks of his home. And he tries to make it easier, by taking drugs to numb the pain, and he wishes for some rain, and for him to be back home. And he watches mirades of his baby, pretending that he's writing a letter, to keep her from wondering what happened to him. And the brokedown camel really is a camel, like a brokedown car, only this time the vehicle is a camel.

So, do you think wwii shouldn't have taken place? That stepping in to destroy the insane political party and its crazed killer of a leader was a bad idea? 'Cause i mean, that was a BIG war. That must make it super duper bad! Shame on you Allied Forces! I mean, a couple hundred voluntarily enlisted soldoers are worth way more a million innocent lives of men and women and children, right?

Oh, and the radicalists in Iraq etc? theyre killing and oppressing and bombing to force a religion. Thats not so bad. Not as bad as war...

The big deal is that we're not fighting a country. We're fight an insane group of radicals hiding behind a country. So, unlike Germany or Japan, they wont stop as the casualties stack up. They don't have their citizens to think about. If a village full of /"innocents/" die theyre not going to care. at all. Hell, if these people don't care about their own lives, if they blow themselves up just to kill a couple of innocent people and send a message, they sure dont give a damn about someone elses. They see it either as getting rid of another stain on the world or another radical being sent to the afterlife to be rewarded.

Wow, how are you writing this without a computer? or a house. Shouldn't you be looking for food? And what about that water supply? Have you found a reliable water source yet? but be careful. You get a nick it might get infected. Then what will you do, without any access to medical care? And don't get caught carrying food around. Itll get stolen!

Yea, you must be so poor.

You, and Bush, are richer than you think. And its all because of this country. You rise up according to how hard you work, and how much ambition you have. Is it harder if you start off poorer? HELL YEA! but you have the freedom to move up. So what if poorer kids are the ones signing up? So they get into a college? So they have an education? So they can get a job? So they can make money? so they can have a stable life? So their kids will have the choice of joining the military ir not? And so what if richer kids arent signing up? Thats like complaining that rich kids dont have to get a summer job at bk. The poorer kid might not like it, but he's trying to earn money to better his life. And you should applaud that. If he joined just to be paid, at least he has that courage. And if she joined to protect her country and fight for the freedom of these people, then GOOD FOR HER! are you complaining that rich kids don't go and work in coal mines? Its dangerous too, should we push them down a mine shaft and throw a pickax at them? (its not a perfect analagy, but you get the picture.)

Yea cause a couple hundred of US soldiers lives, lives THEYRE sacrificing to give these people freedom from an oppressive tyrant are TOTALLY worth more than an ENTIRE NATION OF INNOCENT PEOPLE. people who aren't even involved with the war. "i say mr. hitler, all this mass killing of a certain race, sexuality, or political opposition seems rather bloody don't you think? If you would please lay off for a bit, that would be very pleasing to me and the rest of the Allied Forces. We don't want any confrontation, mind you, so i was thinking we could resolve this with a game of slap-jack. Best two out of three?

"Hey now, Mr. Who-Sane, now we dont think thats right, you killing women and children like that. The oppression thing, we have to talk about that too. I mean, I understand that women are complicated and a bit wearin sometimes, but all these "regulatory" rules and such are a bit extreme. Radical even. And this blowing yurselves up to kill others? whats up with that? Unnessalatory. Lets just wrestle. Whoever pins the other fur twenty crocadills wins, kay?"

First off, i know its alittle late now, with obama and everything, but how is the war making bush and his "little friends" richer? what do they have a deal with iraq saying, yea, with every soldier and live we lose, you give my wife a new prada bag and matching heels? And with every loan we take out from other countries to try and get enough weapons to iraq you'll give me a new car and private jet? thats the simple-mindedness that made it so difficult for bush, and that lead us so blinded into following obama's naivete and indesion...

And as for this "piece of shit war" How many people do you think said that in wwii? How many people said, "well, germany's all the way over there, across an entire ocean. It doesn't affect us." And they sat in their safe, comfortable American houses as thousands of innocent men, women, and children were murdered. And the US didnt do ANYTHING until THEY directly got involved. It wasnt until the war was almost over and one of their navy ports was bombed that they suddenly decided to go in and save these victims. And they are forever seen as the heroes, when they could have saved so many more by seeing the holocost for what it was, an act of a mass murderer, and stepped up to stop it. "Dubya" was just trying to keep from repeating history. The difficult thing about this war is that its not one country against another. Its a scattered group of radicals that could pop up anywhere among innocent civilains and that will stop at nothing to force and fight for their religion. And it just so happens that in their religion, everything in America is immoral, and must be destroyed. And in the meantime theyll iust get rid of the heretics in their own country. And see if they can scare us away by hurting innocent men, women, and children. Sound familiar? And if it does, then theyll just bring those "war tactics" to America. So we have to go in, but the country sees what we and other powerful countries have done in the past, and they don't want that to happen, they don't want us to take control of their homeland. and with a history of impiralism, who can blame them?

Also, its entirely possible to like a song without agreeing to it. Its also possible to like a message but think its a poorly written song. Its the songs that have a good sound and good message that you end up LOVING.

you're both right. The band looks like the old nazi band, red with a white circle with the black symbol in the middle. But in place of the swastika, a stylized dollar symbol is used. Therefore the metaphor is that the captialists and the capitalist system has become like nazi germany, which is both incorrect and disrespectful toward those who suffered through that tyranny. Good music, but, like most pop songs, deluded and simple-minded.

Lily Allen – The Fear Lyrics 15 years ago
I think "I'm not a saint" is saying that she's not behaving like, well, like a saint. But because of the way that society is set up and how we idolize a few celebraties in Hollywood, that sort of behavior is accepted. She's not exceptional, she's "not a sinner."

And The Fear is the consuming quality of living in that sort of lifestyle. The fear of being left behind and not up on the latest fashion. And the vague feeling that this life is missing something. But she doesn't know what's right or even what's real, so she just goes along with it until she finds the truth. But the longer she continues like this, the more The Fear consumes her and the farther she is from the truth.

Lily Allen – The Fear Lyrics 15 years ago
As sweet willi has so patiently explained, the message is pretty clear, from the lyrics to the music video to the tone of the song. The character (not neccessarily the singer) lives in a blind, materialist world, set up by Hollywood and the media. And thoughout history people have fought and died for this kind of wealth, but she doesn't care about any of this, all she wants is diamonds and a thin waist. Or is it? She doesn't even know anymore, but it doesn't matter, this is what they say is what's right, and she'll do anything to get it until she figures out what she wants..

In the music video, Lily is in a kind of Alice-in-Wonderland (with a darker edge) house. But at the end, as the camera zooms out, you notice the world isn't as bright as the fantasy inside the life of publicity.

The point of the song is a kind of sarcastic distain toward celebreties (as well as herself) who are consumed in this world that isn't real and isn't connected to reality, and what's more, don't really care that they don't know what's going on in the world. It's all cool as long as they're getting thinner.

I like The Fear quite a bit, but I must say this is one of the very few that I do. I found that many of Lily Allen's music was very sophmoric, simplistic ideas of society: cliche, worn, and tired. As well as over-simplistically delivered. "Drugs are bad and mean people aren't any fun. So if you don't like me, you can die in the sun. And if you don't like me, then you don't have to come. And my life is so hard, you have no idea, I can't think of a rhyme so I guess I will see ya. I grew up with connections, you see I still have 'em, but now I have to stick something clever so I can sell an album. Oh well, I guess I don't know one, I'll just say that fighting wars are no fun."
I'm not much of a fan of her personally either. I really don't care about her tabloids, but in interviews, etc, she wasn't very charming. Though she's supposed to be like twenty-something, she acts like she's trying to be fifteen or something.Trying too hard to be cute and falling just short of obnoxious.

Sorry, I usually don't slam an artist like that...

Sorry, just realized how rant-y that sounded. The third part about being compared to "pre-pubecent" idiots was supposed to sound alittle more light-hearted than it came out. And I'm not saying you should insult people who are homosexual or bisexual or anything. I don't think you should use "that's so gay" any more than "you're such a spaz" or jew or retard or anything else like that as an insult. Any more than you should call someone an amputee or burn victim as an insult. I think you can think of things that are alot more clever that don't need demean an innocent bystander. Cliches are boring.

god, I can't seem to break out of this ranting groove. Even my anti-anti-rant sounds rant-y.

Omg! like o my god, like totally, like god, like this song is like so oviusly about blahblahblah and blahblahblah and if u dnt agree than ur lyke a bunch of stupid retard dummy poo heads!

Look, obviously some people google anything they can think of and find this site and write whatever kind of crap they can "think" up. Tell those people they're stupid. Please. But don't go around insulting people because they happened to have a well-thought out response just because they happen to clash with what you think. Say, "this is what I think." Period. Because if everyone agreed with each other, this site would be completely pointless. And if you go around saying, ugh that's stupid, then you have other people putting up responses, such as this particular one, saying "dude that's just not cool."

As for the whole, "hey man, thats not cool, using "gay" as an insult" I'm getting really tired of that. For one thing, how are people who are homosexual at anyway handicapped? Why do you need to stand up for them? They can take care of themselves. I hope you stand up for every child who gets teased for being fat or skinny or short or having red/black/brown/blond hair or wearing glasses or having braces or having crooked teeth or having a different religion or having no religion or eating different foods or speaking a different language or still learning English/etc...etc...etc...?
How many people have you heard say, god, your such a spaz? Have you ever pulled them aside and said, "hey, don't say that, that's not cool"? Which do you think is worse, having epilepcy or having different sexual preferrences?

And everyone stop saying anyone who says something stupid needs to finish puberty. Its insulting to us kiddies to be compared to those idiots (not to be hyprocritical, of course.)

Oh, and I'm pretty sure "irony" is the wrong word.

I think its kind of funny how much power you guys think the banker really have. Just because they hold your money doesn't mean they can touch it. They take your money that YOUR paying they to hold, loan it to someone else, who, hopefully will pay them back (why do you think they are so picky with giving out loans?) and that person pays them back with interest, they keep the interest (it IS a business after all) and give you back your money whenever you need it. Have you ever gone to the bank and they say, "O, you wanted that BACK? gee, I didn't know, I thought you were just giving it to me..." And so what if they get paid well? They're businessmen! Some businesses pay better than others! And they WORK to get there! have you noticed that its usually rich, OLDER bankers? they have to work their way up, just like everyone else. It just so happens, in that particular business, "up" is much higher than in others. Also, if you disagree so much, pay for everything in cash. get a really good strongbox and take care of it yourself. Probabily not as safe as a bank, but it will keep you 100% debt free! As for what some of the other people have been saying about not knowing who kim jong il is and that we went into the war for no good reason, think about WWII! How much longer would the Hollicust have continued if Pearl Harbor hadn't been attacked? How many more innocent lives would have been taken? In this case, no one else was even stepping up to the plate. We couldn't be apathic and let history repeat itself. I mean, come on people, how old are you? I'm barely 15 and I care more about this stuff than you do. As for Kim Jong Il, there's not much we can do except keep a close eye on him. North Korea is its only country, and the government is technically none of our business.

The Killers – Jenny Was a Friend of Mine Lyrics 15 years ago
sorry, one more thing. Though I know its a murder TRILOGY I think "Mr. Brightside" fits in very nicely. He met this girl, and though she probabily doesn't have any feelings for him, without even using him. She doesn't know how he feels, cause it was, after all, only a kiss... My crackpot theory is that he had just been released from rehab and he was "feeling fine" but meeting the girl pushed him back into the old paranoid/obssessed-stalker-psychopath. And so he met Jenny, and became obssessed.

(A fun thing is that the story can repeat as many times as you want. He gets out of rehab, meets a girl, becomes obssessed, kills her, denies it, gets away with it, gets "help", gets out, meets someone else, and dubs her as "jenny." And so it continues...)

The Killers – Jenny Was a Friend of Mine Lyrics 15 years ago
OH...MY...GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDD!!!!!!!!!! I've had "Bourbon" for a while now, and always loved it, but had had NO IDEA about the amazing trilogy. Ok, so here's my interpertation:

"LTBOTS": Jenny (the narrator's girlfriend) has just moved out, and they're either separated or broken up. The guy is obsessed and depressed, sitting around drinking, watching tv, and (potentionally) stalking her. And he is broken up, drunk, and wailing throughout the song, talking to her, either in real life or in his mind, asking her if he still has a chance, telling her that he wants to be with her, that he NEEDS to be with her. And in the end, as his voice becomes slurred, I think he's either falling asleep or getting preoccupied with another idea (killing her?)

OR

I had another idea while writing this, and I think I like this version better:
The narrator was drinking, mourning his break-up with Jenny. He confronted her, telling her, in drunken, slurred wails, that he loves her (obssessively). And "hold you tight" is more aphixiating than sweet, and "before you say goodbye" is before you die. And near the end, as the song climaxes, is the actual killing. And at the very end, as his voice begins echoing the most and slows and softening is him whispering to her as he lays her down or as she loses conscienceness as she dies.

"MS" Still blinded by his love and horriffied with what he's done, the killer stuck her in the backseat of his car. She was weak, but still alive, crying out, but no one heard her, no one could save her. He drives faster and faster, still half drunk and completely psychotic, saying "we were such a good thing" "make it go away" too much is happening, its just too much, i can't cope, it's too much stress on you, let me ease your pain, baby, "let me take a little more off your mind." So he takes her to the beach and kills her (probabily choking her) watching her die (taking her breath away and watching her disappear) And as he dumps her body into the sea, he cries out why did she have to be such a slut? why did she drive him to this? (a real short skirt/gloss&curls/guilty girl) whether or not she actually was a slut is irrelevent. And this is their secret, this is because he loves her, because because becausebecausebecause BECAUSE! and they were so good together.
nononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononononono

"JWAFOM": this one's pretty self-explainatory. He's being interrogeted by the police, and he's been there all day. He's trying to leave, telling them that he knows his rights, that they don't have anything on him, and that there's no motive for him to kill her. After all, haha, Jenny WAS a friend of his. But at the same time, he can't help but replay the seen in his mind, relishing how she didn't make a sound as he "held her close." And he is starts off sounding sad and regrettful, like a friend would after finding out that their friend died, saying, sadly, oh, poor Jenny, she was my friend, how could this happen? But as the song progresses, the narrator slowly loses it, and his voice begins to lose his cool and the music becomes a little more frantic. I think the murderer might be suggesting that she committed suicide, saying that something just "wasn't the same." "She said she loved me, but she had somewhere to go" might have sounded like a suicide "note" to the police, but to the narrator, it was just another justification.
I love how the song starts with stylized fuzzy radio talk, helicopter choppers, and sirens.

(sorry for any misspellings. And if I sounded a bit crazy, I was just getting in the right mindset)

The Killers – Where the White Boys Dance Lyrics 15 years ago
ok so the song is about a girl who knows tht her boyfriend is cheating on her (don't know if with a girl or guy, and to tell the truth, does it really matter?) and she goes to get a drink. as this is happening, you can tell she's about to do something crazy, or something she might regret. An idea began hatching, and her thoughts shifted "from her whiskey to her keys." She calls her friend to get reassurance, and to get her to keep her from do doing whatever it is she's half-planning to do. But instead, her friend eggs her on. So they do out to the city and hook up. She tells the random guy that he "might have a chance" if he takes her around town to clubs, etc. I think the man who she doesn't meet is either the man he's cheating on her with or the friend/boss/whatever that he's using as an excuse to get away. Just because Brandon sings about stuff like that doesn't mean anything. People can write about anything they can imagine. I don't think the Decemberists were ever eaten by a whale, or JK Rowling went to a ~*magical*~ school... and if he is gay or bi or whatever, why does that matter?

ps what are the songs in the Murder Triology? Ive never heard of this...

even if ian didn't mean it to be a concept album, I can see how it could easily become one. I mean, its like if someone said to you, " your phone and jacket and shoes match," that doesn't mean you chose them intentionally to be the same color. you chose the jacket for the same reason you bought those shoes, because you like that color. The same applies to the songs in that album. Ian had the same opinions
and views in all of them because they were his views, and he was writing the lyrics. So his ideas would inevitablily end up in most of the songs.

this song is probabily about the cycle of life. How its futile and how you never really get anywhere. You're just walking through life until the sun finally stops (you die) then you return to the Earth as carbon, and something will steal your carbon, just as you stole something else's carbon. the middle of the song is probabily from the Earth to humans. "who the hell kade you the boss?" By trying to take control, we managed to ruin everything, and now who the hell will ever get on? So we can only die, but we forgot to cock the gun. And so whatever, I guess we just lost... oh well, who cares? We're all just walking without going anywhere. We're not getting anywhere, and its not over until we part with our sensory as we die.

ps anyone else find the last "hahhh hahhh hahhh" part creepy?

alright, im going to try again.... so i definitely agree with the people who say the song's about evolution and the human's destruction of the Earth. We crawled out of the sea, lost our tails (evolved) and continue to evolve (lets shake hands if you want but soon both hands are gone) until we completely destroy ourselves and our planet and we're forced to go back into the ocean and start again. "if you think you know enough to know that you have had enough./And if you don't you probabily will" people who are inable to face global warming will, eventually (when there's nothing left) "lets shake hands if you want but soon both hands are gone" politicians can shake hands, and pass bills, and make speeches all they want, but so we won't be able to stop it. and from the Earth's point of view: "take it all that you need like my sign says for free." i also agree with the whole, seasoning is purely to help the flavor and doesn't offer the whole point of eating and enjoying food which is to get nutrition bit. oh, and i think forced health is right, or if not right, then better. By taking evolution into our own hands, we're getting health packaged and stamped, but we're sacrificing the natural order... forcing health and destroying ourselves (the earth can bounce back, its the species that won't, including us) the other suggestion is too straight forward and simple for mm. somerhing that makes you think and assume a little about what the band was thinking about when they wrote this is much more mm...

Pink – Sober Lyrics 15 years ago
yea, this song is definitely about her "waking up" and realizing whats going on around her. She sees how she acts, and what it leads to, and sees that its meaningless. But to break away from that, to be clean and awake, and SOBER scares her to death. She doesn't want to be always high or crashing, but how will she protect herself if she can see whats actually happening? "im safe, up high/ nothing can touch me... how do i feel this good sober?" the party's over (the break from reality) and she's not enjoying it any more. "crying scares me cause it screams the truth" the sincerity of breaking down and crying is terrifying. to admitt to yourslf that you can't handle it, that its not what you want, that nothing is real any more can leave you feeling helpless. Completely vulnerable. And what do you do when your rock begins to crumble?

its definitely crying besides, that makes more sense. to cry, you have to be vulnerable, and that kind of sincerity is terrifying. sorry girl, i didn't mean to take up your reply space. I know what you mean. I'm fifteen and its scary some of the shit some of my friends and other kids my age and younger have gotten mixed up in. You just have to know that no one controls you, not alcohol, drugs, your friends, or even your loved ones. You can decide where you want to go. Its not easy, but it just depends on how hard you want it.

no, its "how do i feel this good sober" She's asking how she can get this kind of feeling if she's not drunk/high/in a relationship. "i'm safe up high/ no one can touch me/ How do I feel thos good sober?"
