Boz Scaggs – Lido Shuffle Lyrics 3 months ago
I think both cmmumu and LeeA3 have good explanations, it seems the song could be about a stickup man or a card hustler. I’ve heard other suggestions that the song is autobiographical and about a struggling musician trying to break into the music business. The lyrics are rather wide open for interpretation.

From song facts: This song is about depression and not being able to enjoy the simple things in life

The Kinks – 20th Century Man Lyrics 9 months ago
@[spmuzik:47811] Well Ray Davies is the “father of Britpop”, but also the Kinks practically invented punk rock and lyrics that were about fighting back against the system. So every punk, post-punk, and alternative band (like Radiohead) are basically indebted to the Kinks

To me this song is about living a life of wasted complacency

Pink Floyd – Paranoid Eyes Lyrics 10 months ago
Most of the album is a critique of the Falklands War, but Waters meshed it with leftovers from The Wall to make the Final Cut. This song could be about a PTSD-riddled veterans, or more broadly could pertain to the average man who becomes lost in his purpose and had fallen for the illusions of materialistic excess in his youth, now reaching middle age and not having much to show for. But he is too afraid to let anyone see how scared and unsure he is of his own self. He is a stranger to himself

U2 – New Year's Day Lyrics 1 year ago
These aren’t the complete lyrics:

“We’re told this is the golden age,
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage”

This is obviously an anti-war song about how peace never comes on New Year’s Day,

Paul Simon – Mother and Child Reunion Lyrics 5 years ago
"The course of a lifetime runs over and over again"

Paul seems to be speaking of the ever-changing life force that is constantly creating and destroying. Perhaps he is referring to reincarnation. So what does it matter that this life ends when we will eventually be reunited in one form or another?

Paul Simon – Mother and Child Reunion Lyrics 5 years ago
"The course of a lifetime runs over and over again"

Paul seems to be speaking of the ever changing life force, that is both constantly creating and destroying. So he says do not be sad, for we will all be born again, possibly through reincarnation.

Crowded House – Don't Dream It's Over Lyrics 6 years ago
I think it’s a very simple meaning, how often people are torn apart by circumstance or human cruelty, but what Neil Finn is saying is don’t be divided or put down. When we stand together we are strong and can beat any adversity.

Van Morrison – And It Stoned Me Lyrics 7 years ago
The line about letting the water run all over him has a sort of spiritual connotation. They reflect the purity and innocence of his youth, that cleanse him and stir him deeply.

Jackson Browne – Doctor My Eyes Lyrics 7 years ago
I agree with Mart695 about that lyric, although I think it also signifies how people "go just where they will" (going about their day to day lives unaware of what occurs around them), and he never noticed how oblivious other people were until he began to doubt his previous perception of the world (or lost his innocence). Very poetic lyrics.

@[lannymad:11032] What a great comment. It seems like this song has always existed, and The Stones just seemed to tap into the other side to retrieve it.

Electric Light Orchestra – Eldorado Lyrics 8 years ago
All these comments are bang-on. Eldorado is the place of beauty and magic that only exists in his mind, and although his life has seemingly ended, he will happily spend the rest of his days there in the "eternal dream." Even if he has no freedom in this world, he believes he is free in the dream.

Bruce Cockburn – Wondering Where The Lions Are Lyrics 8 years ago
I definitely agree with Chuckbane. It's about being at peace with the world and the wonder of being alive. "Wondering where he lions are" is a metaphor for no longer being afraid of death or anxious thoughts about our limited time here on Earth, because thinking about eternity, and how nothing ever permanently changes, has got him in a peaceful ecstasy. A beautiful, feel-good song that brings a moment of calm clarity to the storm of life.

Tears for Fears – Pale Shelter Lyrics 8 years ago
It seems to be about an appeal to authority, whether it's God, society, your family, or your partner. We are all born with this innate inferiority complex where we want to be in total control of our lives, but we brutally realize this can never be. In the end, you're always going to be under the heel of something else.

David Bowie – Ashes to Ashes Lyrics 8 years ago
@[montresor:5341] This is the best interpretation of the song. It is about celebrity culture and isolation. Messing with Major Tom sounds more like forgetting who you really are, and losing all happiness and sense of direction. Becoming overtaken by one's own ego.

These lyrics are INCOMPLETE.

There is an extra verse

A journey's end, a wounded soul.

Fleetwood Mac – Hypnotized Lyrics 9 years ago
A song about the supernatural, or the unknown. The skeptics and realists among us (which is most people) will always think logically about strange, unexplainable scenarios. But Bob Welch is saying that rather than thinking too hard about whether it's possible, you should instead let the wonder of it wash over you and let you feel that there are mysteries out there that can never be explained. Or to have faith.

XTC – Making Plans For Nigel Lyrics 9 years ago
I see both the paternal and political viewpoints. To me, Nigel's parents in the broader sense represent society molding him into a docile servant and funneling him towards a job sector (that is unequivocally doomed, british steel fell apart in the 80s, like mining).

Reminds me of other songs like Lennon's "Working Class Hero" or Supertramp's "Logical Song". This song has a typically English sensibility, Nigel is assumed to be happy because he is trained to not speak his mind, and in a insidious way, maybe Nigel is made to think he's happy as well.

The Who – Eminence Front Lyrics 9 years ago
Maybe people don't know how disturbed and, frankly, DEPRESSING this song is. This is Pete Townsend after all, the "hope I die before I get old", experiencing the mid life crises of all mid-life crises. This song sounds like he's tired and sick of money, sick of fame, vanity, wealth, phoniness, sick of life, fed up with everyone.... sick of The WHo!

People forget.

Traffic – You Can All Join In Lyrics 9 years ago
Wonderful song that makes you want to get up and move around! I guess Dave Mason starts the song out as a sort of shuffle, where you can make up the words and dance as you go along. By the third verse the song is in fact about being "who you want to be". And after all, life is just like a dance.

submissions
Paul McCartney – Let 'Em In Lyrics 9 years ago
This is about the holiday time when the in-laws come around for Christmas dinner. McCartney captures the horror of this perfectly with the creepily prosaic melody. What he's really saying is "Don't let 'em in!"

The Rolling Stones – Sister Morphine Lyrics 9 years ago
There's a man lying in hospital bed, waiting for the nurse to come around with the morphine to take away his pain. He's dying, and the cold, clinical, impersonal nature of it is described as "the doctor having no face". The man is dying, and he knows that the next hit of morphine will probably send him off for good. And "Sister Morphine" is either the nurse, or it is death, and will be there when the white sheets of the hospital bed are stained red with his blood.

The Byrds – America's Great National Pastime Lyrics 9 years ago
No comments for this great song? This isn't a typical Byrds song, as it was written by Skip Battin, who was only in the group for a short time.

This song paints two portraits of the good old USA. One that loves its baseball, Coca Cola, fast cars, and apple pie. The side effect of this is that America tends to live vicariously through this materialism and ends up losing sight of why it was created in the first place. Liberty soon becomes tyranny.

Wonderful. You can still have religious metaphor in a song by an atheist. The parallels are so obvious, and I'm merely pointing it out.

Pink Floyd – Eclipse Lyrics 9 years ago
You could see it that way. But also what it's saying is that everything in the universe is in perfect harmony and balance. It is only us humans that are messed up. The moon represents the chaos and madness of our minds that eclipses the god-giving light of the sun. That's why Dark Side of the Moon is really the dark side of human nature, as it blinds us, but it's also what makes us unique. And, as the last lines show, there is no dark side of the moon, it's all dark. It's only the sun that makes it bright. So in fact, everyone is crazy, and that is our purpose. So what it's saying is don't worry, because we are all one and the same.

Johnny Nash – I Can See Clearly Now Lyrics 9 years ago
Simply put, the rain and obstacles are created by the fearful mind. When the mind frees itself of its restrictions, suddenly it becomes in tune with life, and everything is laid out before you. "Look all around, nothing but blue sky" is you finally becoming in touch with God.

Deep song.

The English Beat – Save It For Later Lyrics 9 years ago
Ok, after a bit of thinking I think I've finally interpreted this song correctly. I think the song is from the perspective of someone talking to their unfaithful partner, a classic case of them either sleeping around or being untrue. He is saying that sooner or later, you'll get found out, and so save the anger, frustration, and bullshit for another time. Just be honest with me about whether out relationship can work out, and don't run away and leave me hanging.

Jackson Browne – Before The Deluge Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is vague enough to have multiple meanings, but the one thread tying it all together is that of the 'Apocalypse', or in reference to the New Testament, a disclosure of knowledge.

The deluge that occurs could very well be the four Horseman of the Apocalypse arriving as foretold in Biblical times, or the second coming of Christ. When Judgement Day finally comes around, only a few will survive, and the rest will be delivered from sin by the fury and wrath of the Universe. Good will triumph over evil, and the present age will end.

"Let creation reveal its secrets by and by, by and by" - the world will by then reveal its secrets to us, and....
"When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky" - Our inner spirits finally ascend to the heavens to reconnect with God.

Talking Heads – Life During Wartime Lyrics 10 years ago
I know most people see it as a metaphor for "touring on the road" or "suburban paranoia", but I can't help but feel how eerily realistic it is. One could never imagine a developed country and superpower such as the United States turning into a warzone. But it is so easy imagine what it would be like as some third world country racked by civil war. Morality has no place in such a world.
