MGMT – Time to Pretend Lyrics 15 years ago
songs awesome.
I think it's about a guy whose talking about all the things he wants to do..what he can do since he's in the "prime of his life"
I think it's a little bit sarcastic with lines like "I'll move to Paris,
shoot some heroin and fuck with the stars
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars" and "This is our decision
to live fast and die young
We've got the vision, now let's have some fun!"
but then again when he says the line "Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute" i think yeah, he knows that doing heroin and cocaine are extreme, but honestly the monotinus (sp?) idea of getting up and sitting in a cubical and waiting in traffic every single day for the rest of your life sounds almost as terrible, so why not live it up now while you still can?
Again i think he's mocking either rock stars or even teenagers when he says "forget about our mothers and our friends" because when we're doing these crazy things, all we do is think about ourselves and only care about that moment, however we are "fated to pretend" or fated to live in boring, mundane life, pretending that everything is okay..pretending that our indifference to every day boring life is okay. if this is our fate, how can you blame us for trying to change, even at the cost of such extreme measures such as, in this case, heroin use.
in the verse when he saying all the things he will miss, he's telling us all the things we will miss out when we choose this life style. hes kinda like, shit...i miss my sister, miss my father, etc but he goes right back to the 'what can ya do' mentality in the next verse "but theres nothing we can do..."
Again, is he referring to being 'fated to pretend' as that mundane lifestyle we're going to have to live.
the last line "We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end" means whoever the "we" is, they are dying in such an unfortunate way, something that could have been prevented, but their own stupidity led them to such a death
that's when the 'fated to pretend' meaning actually switches, and they were the ones pretending the whole time. pretending that their family, friends, their own life didn't matter. they 'pretending' that crazy lifestyle they lived was ok and better then what was to come, even though they never gave it chance, and gave up everything that meant the most to them.

wow. that was long.
well thats just my interpretation, let me know what you think
