Matisyahu – One Day Lyrics 11 years ago
missmalky should perhaps meditate on the underlying message of this song, as Matisyahu's whole point was that true freedom lies not in being right but in unconditional love for everyone.

and judgment as to who is or isn't a true follower/believer is definitely not the way.

Matisyahu – One Day Lyrics 11 years ago
ahh, this song transcends the concept of an individual's life being of utmost importance to the encompassing concept of the individual as part of the larger collective of humanity. and that the hope that this will come to be someday is integral to the eventual manifestation of true peace on earth:

"All my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
For the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more
They'll be no more wars
And our children will play..."

so yes, it's a message of hope and optimism on the individual level... but the whole point is that in order for each person to truly be free, we must all be free together :) and love for each other, no matter what, is the key to manifesting this dream into reality.

Matisyahu – One Day Lyrics 11 years ago
sure, it's about our connection the Divine, in whichever form or fashion each individual perceives Him/Her... more than that though, this song is about is about keeping alive hope in our hearts, that someday the infinite love we receive from God/the Source will be outwardly reflected in all of humanity.

"one day this all will change, treat people the same, stop with the violence, down with the hate, one day we'll all be free, and proud to be under the same sun, singing songs of freedom..."

and of course, this requires a setting aside of dogmatic conviction, regardless of its manifestation, in favor of a more accepting and loving approach to our fellow men and women. all beliefs are respected equally, the only essential connecting thread between All of Us being love. because only when love explodes in our hearts collectively can we transcend our differences to allow each person to be exactly who they are.

gah, this song is so incredible

who hasn't felt this way about someone? honestly, this song perfectly encapsulates the oft-bittersweet nature of love... a certain kind of love where even if it was possible to erase someone from our heart, we wouldn't want to.

Apparat – Black Water Lyrics 11 years ago
you could be right about the lyrics, it's so hard to tell sometimes :)

but "surgency" is indeed a word. it's a term associated with the Big 5 framework of personality traits - "surgency" specifically being a trait of positive emotional reactivity/affect (put simply, an optimistic, happy outlook).

personally, i hear "into a loss of surgency," based on a definite "s" sound right before "of surgency," or "surging sea" as you hear it.

i mean, it doesn't matter really of course. i'm not here to be right, everyone hears songs in their own way and develops meanings that are personal to them :)

Macklemore – Same Love Lyrics 11 years ago
oh my god, i just heard this song for the first time. and watched the video.

tears in my eyes. this is so beautiful, and so much truth... truly, all love is equal, and true love is unconditional. this isn't just in relation to romantic love, but every type, every display, and every manifestation of love as the force which connects each living thing to every other.

love connects back together what hate has separated... and what hate has destroyed, love is that which rebuilds. with most things, there are shades of grey, a spectrum of possibilities which lie between two extremes. but not love. because hate, often thought of as the opposite of love, is really nothing more than the absence of it. until love is the only thing we can see, we'll always be blind.

and i say it's time that every one of us begins the process of filling the emptiness inside ourselves with the only thing that can... the only thing worth fighting for, because once we win, there won't be anything left to battle against.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti – Menopause Man Lyrics 11 years ago
pondering the lyrics, i have some thoughts regarding the lines "trying too hard, to be yourself, said you're trying too hard to be what you already are" makes me think of when people "exaggerate" the behavior stereotypes of their socially-proscribed gender role. especially men and anti-ANY feminine attributes (the fact that the sequitor "no homo!" is an expression in american society speaks for itself here). it's this compulsive need to reassert one's masculinity, even in the absence of it being threatened.

also, i've read interviews in which ariel spoke about how he often feels he thinks more like a woman than a man (perhaps he operates on a more intuitive/emotional-oriented thought process than logical/surface-level, as is the broad generalization of female/male information processing).

also, "neutering" (in verb form, as he's using it here) is when a male animal is castrated, to prevent the animal from being able to procreate. i don't think this lyric is literal, but meant symbolically, to "cut out/remove" his masculinity, in a sense. the next line, "saturn star" is intriguing because in astrology, saturn is often representative of fathers or authority figures in general (and power, or authority, is connoted with masculinity anyway).

not sure where i'm going with this, but there's just a lot of contrasting of gender-oriented terms, the breaking glass sounds at the end of the song make me think of a "breaking through" type symbolism, of gender stereotypes and identity. it's not the same as sexual identity, after all, your sexual and gender identities do not have to dictate your internal sense of being "masculine" or "feminine," and there's nothing wrong with a girl being "masculine" or a more "feminine" guy (which is true REGARDLESS of sexual orientation!) fuck society telling us how to act and behave. we don't have to be any more or any less than we are, and we especially don't have to prove anything to anyone.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti – Menopause Man Lyrics 11 years ago
i disagree about the transsexual comment, why does gender identity have to be tied with the genitals? geez. if you've seen ariel pink, he has a more androgynous/or often more "feminine" style of dress and appearance. i think it's more likely this song is about crossing societal gender role boundaries, really, stomping all over them really.

M83 – Reunion Lyrics 11 years ago
why does the "long lost love" have to be one specific person? it could also refer to something even bigger than romantic love... such as the kind of transcendental force that overtakes you ("capsize," even?) when you feel, just for a few fleeting moments or two, the connections between yourself, humanity, the planet and everything in it, and the universe... to everything. literally. "one with the universe," and all that, the kind of feeling that is so difficult to even describe or rationalize because it's so... well, transcendental. it does indeed transcend space and time, words, is so much bigger than your body or your concept of yourself or anything than can be quantified or even symbolized by any word or any symbol or symbol of a symbol, anything that can be grasped by the human brain, ego, or thoughts...

of course, m83 captured a slice of this ephemeral yet infinite feeling with this song. so yes, it's about love. it's about the kind of love that you know once you're lucky enough to feel it, yet it is true, romantic love is a branch branching off from another branch of an even larger branch of a tree amongst other trees in this forest among forests, into infinity.

yet the original branch is equally as true and real and beautiful as that of the zoomed out forest of forests, a hologram, a fractal representation of the whole of love to infinity. this song is amazing, m83 is amazing. sorry for posting my stream-of-consciousness meanderings on your post, i got lost among a wave.

i just wanted to comment on how beautiful this song is. honestly, i think the new album of theirs is my favorite - perhaps the others were more original, or groundbreaking, but "penny sparkle" is just so easy to listen to. the music flows into my ears like water, immediately catchy and enjoyable, yet interesting enough to hold up to repeated listening.

and this song... one of my very favorites on this album. i'd say it's a perfect downtempo song, i love the way kazu's voice stretches out the syllables in the chorus, a trail of pixie dust flowing behind each word. great choice for the opening track imo

Wynter Gordon – Dirty Talk Lyrics 12 years ago
describing a female as "cheap" for whatever reason is the only anti-liberation i see here. describe those with active sex lives as cheap if that's how you feel, but a human being? come on, wake up and smell the irony here. that's just a different way to objectify a person, another side of the same old misogynistic coin. if you truly care about feminist issues, you'd have crafted a more eloquent, logical comment than this superficial rant against someone expressing their sexuality, crude lyrics or not.

these lyrics are all wrong. this is important, vastly so, for the context, symbology, and meaning of the song.

corrected:

Shapes still melt into the smoke

Looking down at scattered bones

I used to keep a slender hope

'Til they spread above the stone

'Til they spread above the stone

I pulled the trigger by mistake

Floundering at the aftermath

Slowly recognize the scale

We will be ephemeral

We will be ephemeral

Fact Isn't what you see
Not anymore
, what it used to be

,
Fact isn't what you see
Not what it used to be

I'm flowing with black water

Into a loss of surgency

Into a loss of surgency

Azure Ray – These White Lights Will Bend to Make Blue Lyrics 12 years ago
okay, i finally figured it out.
"i'm only sorry" is the line orenda fink (i believe) is singing in the background. also, some of these lyrics are a tad incorrect:
--
Drive away, just get on the interstate
And slip through this closing gate
Pull into this cheap hotel
A call just to wish you well

You said, "Don't let love break you down"
Well, just show me how
And let me never be broken

Tomorrow a new point of view
These white lights will bend to make blue
Now this can't all look new to you

Are you still living there
Walking the streets with your hollow stare
You say there's loneliness everywhere
So we have nothing to lose
(I'm only sorry)*

The music plays all day long
And sorrow looks beautiful
And lovers seem mystical
(I'm only sorry)*

Tomorrow a new point of view
These bright** lights will bend to make blue
Now this can't all look new to you

Tomorrow a new point of view
These white lights will bend to make blue
Now this can't all look new to you
--
*After dozens of listens, I'm pretty positive this is what can be heard in the background.
** This line is the only part of the song where "white" is replaced with "bright"

Alanis Morissette – Thank U Lyrics 12 years ago
it's about letting go of anything but being, the energy, the light, the everything & nothingness of the now.

the past, the future, time, it's all just an illusion. hopes, dreams, and desires are the holding on to what we don't have, where we aren't but would like to be... let go of these and realize that the All is in the Now, and that is the only thing that truly ever exists. if the Now is All, then we should choose to embody all of the freedom, weighlessness, love, and light that we are capable of.

attachment is pain. letting go to our illusion of the separation between Us, surrendering to the Unity of consciousness as One (the now!) is freedom... and happiness. we have the choice.

The Weeknd – Rescue You Lyrics 12 years ago
damn, this song is so amazing! i love it.
just a couple changes:

Time I signal from afar, lonely hearts at an after party
I'ma try to save you from his flames
Come with me, you don't have to think
Had a long day, I can tell by your drink
Take a look at me, I promise I will be
All the things you wanted him to be

Do you always seem to fight cause I (can tell)
Let there be no tears tonight cause I (can help)
Help you through your misery, hospitality that you need from me
(And girl) I can hear the pain inside (your voice)
Call you every night, but that's a choice and I can take it all away

Let me rescue you, I can see the truth
I can see right through the pain
Let me rescue you, let me fill his shoes
No more tears running down your face

I can take you there
Girl, fly you through the air
Girl, I can be your superhero
Fly you through the stars
Let me light up your dark
I can be your superhero

Trying to free you from this cage, It's a mental prison break
Baby, we can leave, my heart is the key
You're a damsel in distress, looking at your eyes I can see the stress
Take a look at me, promise I will be
All the things you wanted him to be

Do you always seem to fight cause I (can tell)
Let there be no tears tonight cause I (can help)
Help you through your misery, hospitality that you need from me
(And girl) I can hear the pain inside (your voice)
Call you every night, but that's a choice and I can take it all away

Let me rescue you, I can see the truth
I can see right through the pain
Let me rescue you, let me fill his shoes
No more tears running down your face

I can take you there
Girl, fly you through the air
Girl, I can be your superhero
Fly you through the stars
Let me light up your dark
I can be your superhero

I can take you away (take you away)
From the darkness and the pain (darkness and the pain)
Girl, I promise every moment's for you
Show you never-ending love (never-ending love)
I can bring it from above (bring it from above)
I can heal your wounds (heal your wounds)

Let me rescue you, I can see the truth
I can see right through the pain
Let me rescue you, let me fill his shoes
No more tears running down your face

I can take you there

Oh, I wanted love and permanence
You wanted the night when
the stars fell to their death

And now I'm in the city where the lights burn
so bright that I don't have to see them ever again
But I miss them

I know it breaks their hearts
Oh, just how far I had to go

from this place I came from
Darkness illuminated what our eyes missed
A terrible love has a way of showing you things

So break my heart
Oh, break my heart
Oh, break my heart
Oh, break my heart again

So that I might see

Elsiane – morphing Lyrics 12 years ago
oh, man... i had this song on repeat during my quarter-life existential crisis. it was (and still is!) such a beautiful source of comfort for me. listening to these astoundingly poetic words immediately puts me into a state of blissful calm.

as for the meaning:
it's referencing a rebirth (could be anything - spiritual, relationship, existential...), overcoming a difficult experience, and exiting the darkness of a tunnel into the beautiful, beautiful light.

it's about keeping that light on (of love, hope, optimism, and beauty) always, no matter what dark corners and shadows we have to confront. it's about the determination to battle the darkness within, turn away from evil and hate within ourselves and the world by embracing our soul's inner light... seriously. darkness is a natural force in the world, it will always exist, but by seeking to minimize its power and influence over us, our potential for positive progression is limitless.

love is all, all is love. namaste, everyone!

Young Galaxy – Long Live the Fallen World Lyrics 12 years ago
Okay, so I listened a bunch and changed it to "we squandered and spoked me up"
YES, "spoked" is a word - it means to prevent a wheel from turning by inserting a rod. This line could be Mother Earth addressing the world... we have squandered the resources on this planet, and we prevent the cycles of nature from turning as they should by "inserting the rod" of industry and consumerism across the globe.

Hell, I could be wrong. I'm going to purchase a physical copy of the album to alleviate the burden I've placed on myself by trying to decipher the lyrics by ear.

Portishead – The Rip Lyrics 12 years ago
this song reminds me of drugs (opiates, specifically). i'm not necessarily saying that's what it was intended to be about, but the lyrics, to me anyway, are analogous to the process, experience, and feelings associated with opiate use.

"wild, white horses":
ever heard the expressions "horse; underneath the horse, etc" in reference to heroin? don't need to explain this further.

"they will take me away":
why do people use drugs, specifically opiates? to feel good yes, but also to numb themselves from physical, mental, and psychological pain/torment. "they (the drug) "will take me (in this case, that which makes a person human, their spiritual/emotionally-driven core) away."

"and the tenderness i feel":
you're floating on a cloud, completely void of not only the senses of pain/suffering but of the recollection of them.

"will send the dark underneath":
like i explained above, the dark is gone to some other place, it's not within you anymore. i mean, it is, but it's snuffed out. you shoved the pain underneath the rug. it'll reappear later, but for now, you sent it away.

"will i follow?":
when the high starts to dissipate, the threat of the imminent crash (and state of withdrawal, for the addicted, chronically using individual) will shove you back to the pain you used to get away from in the first place.

then the drum loop kicks in, and it reminds me of the hazy, blissful numb of the rush immediately following injection. the emotion behind the words fade, the looping lyrics kicks in (when the moment stands still, the rush is at its peak, time stops!)... followed by the verse again, surrounded yet shrouded by the repeating electronic, synthesized looping sound layers.

interesting how the first half of the song is more melancholy, minimal and bare-sounding. the lyrics and emotion behind them stand out, front and center. this is in contrast to the second half, when the drum/electronic sound loops rush in quickly and faster, like the beating of an accelerating heart. the lyrics are less prominent now, and there's a conspicuous mood change in the song. the heavily-felt emotion of the first pass of the chorus is in diametric opposition to the layered, artificiality of the verse as it's sung seemingly behind the additional loops and sounds.

i could analyze the other verses in the song, but i've already wrote a goddamn novel.

again, i'm NOT saying that this was written with drugs in mind. really, much of the truly great music throughout human history is comprised of complex meaning, applicable to a broad variety of human experiences. this song could also mirror the pains of losing a loved one, a relationship, feeling alone, physical ailments, transcending suffering, WHATEVER. you get my point.

but as a recovering addict (IV use of dilaudid mostly) the lyrics resonate so strongly with my experiences with opiates that i couldn't help but share my thoughts with the rest of you all.

Young Galaxy – Firestruck Lyrics 12 years ago
thanks for the lyrics correction! i buy mp3s not CDs so i had to decipher the lyrics by ear, definitely appreciate the help.

based on introspective analysis of many of young galaxy's similarly powerful songs, i can't help but think that they're once again painting in broad strokes with this offering. when i meditate and reflect on these lyrics, i can't help but feel that it's hinting toward the flames of spiritual rebirth. when you've been off the path for a long time, but something sparks inside you, and before you know it the burning, powerful flames take over once again, connecting your soul to your body once again.

to me, artistic metaphors involving flame/fire are analogous to passion. we see this in love songs, but it's amazing when this feeling is captured as perfectly as it is here in regards to passion of the spirit. with my own experiences involving drug addiction, when i finally cleaned myself up and felt the first tickle of spiritual arousal after such a long period of soul hibernation, i became so invigorated and, well, PASSIONATE about my rediscovered faith (more zen than monotheism, to clarify. not hating on any belief system, just relaying my own).

and so, "blame it on my burnin' heart." i can't help it, the flames have been sparked, the embers are glowing, and i feel like i've come home again.

Austra – The Noise Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm a real stickler for proper punctuation and grammar in posted lyrics, or at least the best possible format. I enjoy adding lyrics to my song data in iTunes, and usually accomplish this by copy + pasting - so naturally I find it troublesome to have to continually edit posted lyrics on my own.

Thank you for posting them, I do appreciate it! However, I find excessive punctuation marks to be distracting and visually displeasing. When it comes to lyrics, periods at the end of each line are unnecessary. The default format for lyrics (including on this website) are to limit punctuation and only use periods, commas, etc. when absolutely necessary. Otherwise things get convoluted and messy real quick.

That said, I have edited and cleaned up these lyrics for you. Thanks again for sharing them! It is so great to be a part of a community in which people can communicate, share, and work together in promoting the love of music, one of life's most sacred and precious joys.

Austra - "The Noise"

I can't sleep at night [the noise, the noise]
My eyes they open wider [the noise, the noise]
I came to relate [the noise, the noise]
Help me compensate for [the noise, the noise]

But I wouldn't do anything
The thundering that throws me away
I wouldn't do anything
Something that keeps me away

I won't go to church [the noise, the noise]
The preacher wouldn't care for [the noise, the noise]
I don't know what's real from [the noise, the noise]
I can't hear a thing for [the noise, the noise, the noise]

I wouldn't do anything
The thunder that throws me away
I wouldn't do anything
The something that keeps me away
I wouldn't do anything
Something that begs me to stay
I wouldn't do anything
Something throws me away

he was saying this because as so often happens in war, citizens are so concerned about what's happening as a direct result of the war (draft, etc.) that they don't give as much attention to all the local wars that are happening every day (poverty, homelessness, people struggling to survive in such a bullshit system) - not that they're neglecting these problems because of the war necessarily, or that they deserve more attention than war - not at all. just that they're AS MUCH OF A PROBLEM and deserve to be fought against too.

that's what i think he was getting at by saying "oh yeah, and vietnam."

------------------------

Big on the underground
What's the point of knocking me down?
Everybody knows
I'm already good on the ground

Most of us stay strong
Shit don't really bound us
Then I go on my own
Making bombs with rubber bands

I have my hard down
So I need a man for romance
Streets are making em hard
So they selfish little roamers
Jumpin' girl to girl
Make us meat like burgers
When I get fat
I'll pop me out some leaders

A protocol to be a Rocawear model?
it didn't really drop that way
My legs hit the hurdle

A protocol to be a rocker on a label?
It didn't really drop that way
Our beats were too evil

But I put away paper for later so I'm stable
A better something better come
So I could get cable
Ghetto pops, food drops
I store them in my stable
I cook em up, pop 'em down
Eat me it off ya a table

The village got on the phone
Said the street is comin' to town
They wanna check my papers
See what I carry around
Credentials are boring
I burnt them at the burial ground
Don't order me about
I'm an outlaw from the badland

Put away shots for later
So I'm stable
Live in trees chew on feet
Watch lost on cable
Bird flu gonna get you
Made it in my stable
From the crap you drop
On my crop when they pay you

I like fish and mango pickle
When I climb trees, them feet then tickle

Well Colroy's here, have no fear
All you old pigs better watch out for this bit
And I'm here at the game and I'm almost ten
I wanna be an actor like Jackie Chan

Lendal is my name; I like to do back flips
Listen to the words that come from my lips
Jump off the bridge and I'll play the didge
And when I catch a fish, I put it in the fridge

My name is Buddy, I can't stand still
Wilcannia to Dubbo to Broken Hill
I've been movin' around from town to town
And this is how I get down!

Rode the BMX when we walked through the bush
The boys fight to ride it, but I just let 'em push
Keith stole an egg from a lil' cuckoo
Kept it safe in his mouth, while he danced jookoo jookoo

There's only one ocean that got fish left
One day we'll have to be a really good chef
And I don't mean us in the bush making meth
Boys if you catch meth you catch your death
When I said that Keith sneezed and had a chick
Broke the little egg in his mouth in little bits

When it gets hot, we go to the river and swim
When we goin' fishin', we catchin' the bream
When the river's high ,we jump off the bridge
And when we get home, we play some didge

When it gets hot, we go to the river and swim
When we goin' fishin', we catchin' the bream
When the river's high, we jump off the bridge
And when we get home, we play some didge

When it gets hot, we go to the river and swim
When we goin' fishin', we catchin' the bream
When the river's high, we jump off the bridge
And when we get home, we play some didge

we're all beams of light, and we're spiraling back toward the source and singularity of all creation. back to where we came from... oneness.

this song is SO GOOD! "blame it on my burnin' heart" is such an amazing line.
