youre right, sarcasim absolutely...look at eulogy, its the same deal. if those lyrics are whats really being said, it no doubt represents the voice that persuades you not to question. the voice of 'society' if you will. but thats how tool gets their message across. In saying those words, maynard is making fun of anyone who believes in them.

some these responses make me wish 2012 really does happen...

this song presents what all other tool songs do, a meaning that applies to anyone and anything that exists. maynard talks about the stone that can either be 'gathered, placed, arranged so shelter turns to home' or thrown 'to stay the stranger'. The lines that follow...'move by will alone' suggest that it is ultimately up to us...this stone can be used for benefit or harm, and it boils down to our human will that makes the decision. The lyrics are somewhat critical of human nature, as are a lot of tool lyrics, but at the same time it is something that needs to be said. The second verse continues this via fire that can 'light the way/warm the home we occupy' or 'forge a blade to slay the stranger'...and of course followed with 'move by will alone'...

This song is a perfect example of why I love tool. All of the metaphysical content, about reality, about our true nature, the underlying theme that all is one. It is as if speaking from the higher state that is our true self. This song in particular does what alex grey's artwork does as well, and it is to tool and mr. grey that i owe much of my spiritual awakening.

My take on the song...

It appears to me that maynard is speaking from his enlightened pure-consciousness state, the mystical observer that that is the true nature of all of us. He speaks of being sperate from the body, as if he is the formless consciousness now understanding that although he is deeply intertwined with this body (this "familiar/overwhelmingly warm one form i hold now") he is in fact not the body at all.

Continuing to "embrace you, this reality here, this one form i hold" alluding to the belief that we actually ARE the reality that we perceive. And we are perceiving it from this body, this form, and everything in the external 'out-there' world is nothing more than a relfection of ourselves.

Perhaps the most deeply resonant lines in this song, "We barely remember what came before this precious moment" is pure brillance. While humans have had to struggle with the questions of where we came from/where we're going after this, the truth, the pure consciousness that we are, is still an underlying part of us, and while it is extremely subtle we 'barely remember' it.

Even more support for the metaphysical/nature of reality theme of this song follows with "choosing to be here, right now..." In the theory of parallel worlds, we are said to 'choose' the reality we experience from a multitude of possibilities in the fifth-dimension, thus 'choosing to be here, right now' in this never ending present moment that we spend our entire existence. Maynard condenses this entire life we live to a single 'precious moment' because in true perspective that is all that it is, a never ending present moment.

"This body holding me, reminding me that I am not alone".
From this state, this pure conscious awareness, it is clear that 'we are not alone'. It is clear there is some sort of intelligence, some sort of power, a force that allows for this existence to happen. The same reason for the existence of the perfect and intricate 'body holding me', you could call it god. But not a god in the clouds with a white beard and staff that is judging all of us, and sending some to heaven and others to hell. But rather the god that we are all a part of, the unconscious that we all share and that creates this connected reality we experience, the "one mind, capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable" to quote reflection.
