Laura Marling – Made by Maid Lyrics 14 years ago
I thought the song was called "Made by Maid".

Anyway, when i saw her live she explained that this song is about a baby born and left in a forest. It grows up by itself, teaching itself about the things around it. Then it finds its way into the real world, and discovers how different and cruel it is:
'So left to wander blind, I find myself in cautious times,
And they say, Loves labour is never lost; labour on to this very day.'
So it goes back to the forest, and there it finds another baby:
'So I walk into the fog, found a babe atop a log and all alone'
and teaches it everything they know about the world,
'Took him under, took him on,
Taught him everything about the world I'd come to know'

beautiful song.

Noah and the Whale – Death By Numbers Lyrics 14 years ago
this is my favourite song by them. To me, this is about how he wants to leave a part of himself behind - or just be remembered - when he's dead, whether it be in people or nature.

and JustLooking is right about the lyrics

The Kinks – Complicated Life Lyrics 15 years ago
I adore this song!
The meaning's pretty blatant,
About a guy who did too much in his life, went to the doctor who told him to stop doing so much, so he basically stopped doing everything, because he thought it made his life 'complicated'.
Really catchy song.

The Kinks – Mr. Churchill Says Lyrics 15 years ago
It's obvious what this song is about; World War II for Great Britain.

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed to so few"
"We shall fight them on the beaches"
"And this was their finest hour!"

Are all lines from a few of Churchill's famous speeches.
There are also mentions of several people who were most popular throughout the war,
Mr. Beaverbrook, Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Mountbatten and Vera Lynn.

I can't understand why this song has no comments?

The Kinks – Living on a Thin Line Lyrics 15 years ago
Am i the only one who didn't hear this off The Sopranos? ;)

"But there's no England now.
All the wars that were won and lost
Somehow don't seem to matter very much anymore."
The song was recorded in 1984, so it is most likely about the Falklands war, and the lyrics are probably directed at Margaret Thatcher.
"Now another century nearly gone,
What are we gonna leave for the young?"
Probably relates to the fact that Britain were losing all their overseas land; So what is there left for the next generations?
This is another Dave Davies songs, and i love the he sounds in it.

I love the simplicity of the lyrics.
Yeah it's obviously about the Winter of Discontent In Britain
"There was a gas strike, oil strike, lorry strike, bread strike
Got to be a superman to survive"
Pretty straight forward.

The Kinks – Muswell Hillbilly Lyrics 15 years ago
"Well I said goodbye to Rosie Rooke this morning" Is most probably Ray referring to saying goodbye to his sister, Rosie, before she moved to Australia.
To me, this song is obviously about Ray and Dave growing up in Muswell Hill in London,
"But they're never gonna kill my cockney pride"
I'm not sure why its 'Hillbilly', maybe it because Muswell Hill wasn't as nice of a place in the '60s as it is today, or maybe it's because of the references to America.
I think maybe Ray dreamed of living in America as a boy,
"I have seen them in my dreams
Take me back to those Black Hills
That I have never seen"
and he dreamed of what his life would be like there. ("They'll try and make me study elocution
Because they say my accent isn't right")
And maybe when he spoke about Rosie at the beginning, he dreamed it was him saying goodbye to her, and moving on, not the other way round.

The Kinks – Celluloid Heroes Lyrics 15 years ago
The song pretty much explains itself.
I love it when Ray talks about all the stars people along Hollywood Boulevard, and how we remember them now, because of their fame.
Greta Garbo turned her back on stardom,
Rudolph Valentino died too young,
Bela Lugosi will always be remembered as a vampire,
Bette Davis had a lonely life,
George Sanders was stylish,
Mickey Rooney is always happy,
And Marilyn Monroe wasn't very tough.

I especially love the lines:
"And those who are successful,
Be always on your guard,
Success walks hand in hand with failure
Along hollywood boulevard."
because it is so true.

The Kinks – Don't Forget to Dance Lyrics 15 years ago
The music at the start sort of reminds me of those cheesy christmas songs you get, so now this song reminds me of christmas, especially because of the mention of snow. But i love the lyrics, and the way Ray's voice sound in this song.
The songs about a woman whose been left alone because all her friends are 'either married, vanished, Or just left alone.' And the narrator of the song is basically encouraging the woman to not give up and be sad, but to dance and 'forget it for a while'.

The Kinks – David Watts Lyrics 15 years ago
I always thought that David Watts was some sort of role model to this guy. He seems to have alot of respect for him and seems to admire him an awful lot, "For he is of pure and noble breed"
I also like the comparison between him and David Watts: "I am a dull and simple lad"
I guess it could be about 'popular kids' at school, but i think its more intense than that, he dreams about being like him. I suppose you could also say that David Watts isn't real and he's just an imaginary person thats everything the guy in the song wants to be.

The Kinks – Suzannah's Still Alive Lyrics 15 years ago
No comments? When this has been up here for over four years? gosh.

I'm not sure whether this has anything to do with the meaning of the song, but in Dave Davies other song 'Death of a Clown' there's a line that says,
"I'm drowning my sorrows in whisky and gin"
In this song there's a line that says, "Whiskey or gin, that's alright"
I think this song is either about a woman 'Suzannah' who is extremely lonely and " sleeps with the covers down
Hopin' that somebody gets in", or its about a woman who's partner went to war and every night she hopes he comes back.
"She's got a picture on the table
Of a man who is young and able"
"She's waiting for a soldier to come home
But she'll cry and never die"

The Kinks – Lola Lyrics 15 years ago
Most commented on Kinks song on this site. Yeah, the song is obviously about a guy who falls for a transvestite in a club. Ray said it was inspired after his manager danced with a transvestite in a London club.

"Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,
but I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man,
so is Lola."
I think what's good about this song, is the ambiguity. We don't know if both he and Lola are glad he's a man, or if Lola is a man as well.

"Lola in the song isn't an actual person, it is a representation of the music business. It will look all friendly and female and sexy and enticing, get you drunk on champagne and say it will "make you a man", but in reality it's all an illusion, its' a devious man pulling strings and pushing you around and forcing you to your knees. And if you do what he says, he'll make you a star."
Although i don't think this is true, its a really good comparison to make.
"Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
why she walks like a woman and talks like a man"
I also love how naive and innocent the guy in the song is. And how once he realises Lola is a man, he falls to the floor, and he looks at her and she at him, and he wants it to stay that way. He accepts Lola for who he/she is.

The original lyrics were:
'where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coco-Cola'
But the BBC made them change it to 'Cherry Cola' due to their policy against product placement.
