LOVE this song and these lyrics. Wilson paints such a vivid picture of a man living alone in an empty world, waiting for someone "until the sky is blue" because the sky turning blue would signify hope. at the end of the song, he gives up on his world and finds that it is time to move on, that the sky will never be blue again. |

You got many of the lyrics wrong, but either way I love this song. Quite simply, this song is about a girl he was with, but how their relationship was a chore and a nag. The lyrics mentioning the mall and MTV suggest that these were among the only things she cared about. Plain and simple, I guess this girl was just a valley girl and a bitch. He talks about being able to see her, but not hear her, which I guess means that he just got sick and tired of her voice, whining and complaining all the time so he ultimately just closed his mind and blanks out, thus the name Anesthetize. It seems that the girl was just too shallow for him, so at the end of the song he just gives up and doesn't respond to her complaints as she calls to him and she just leaves, but he doesn't really care.
That's my take on it, and I know it's only an interpretation but I really do think that this is what Wilson meant when he wrote Anesthetize. I don't know what the gun part means, but leave that out and it all seems to make perfect sense. |

This song is quite simply about death. The line "Ever thought from here on in your life begins, And all you knew was wrong?" is very important in the song. It's said that life is the shortest part of death, and these two quotes go hand in hand. Also, the mention of the sound of the gun and crashing of the windscreen are simply different methods of dying of unnatural causes. It's all just Wilson's commentary and perception on death.
Nonetheless, this song is a masterpiece, though I'm not a huge fan of the instrumental. The metal tone in it just seems a little out of place for lyrics these beautiful.

very very beautiful song. for a very long time, i thought Binaural was total shit, pardon my french, until i finally discovered this song. Thats when i realized that it wasn't bad, just different. Particularly this song. beautiful lyrics, beautiful music. to those who have mentioned routine, i believe you have hit the nail on the head. but in my own interpretation its about the rapid passage of life by routine, and the realization of this followed by regret. its about how your life can just pass you by if you make nothing of it. |

I'm a 16 year old guy, and a huge fan of TOOL.
I just want to say that this song has the most powerful lyrics of any song by TOOL. Hell, it has the most powerful lyrics of any song by anyone. In all honesty, after reading the lyrics along with the music, I was crying. Like actually crying. Don't get me wrong, but I've never been religious. But religious or not, this song truly sums up life and death. This is a beautiful tribute to his mother that delves into the unknown deeper than anything ever before. Producing a poetic masterpiece like this is an achievement no one should ignore. The time, the effort, the emotion that goes into creating something like this: it all just adds up to song that is nothing short of monumental. |

anyways, someone on page one mentioned "1984" in their interpretation. I have read it, and i feel that they are very similar. "I know exactly how it will end" (Winston knows that the bullet is just waiting for him.) "A little bit comes bleeding through" (A little bit of his memories, maybe) "Writing on a little piece of paper" (winstons diary?)
However, a lot of this makes me think of a man who thought he could see the future or something, and was put away in solitary confinement. |
