The Tallest Man on Earth – Little Brother Lyrics 11 years ago
I saw in an interview where they asked Kristian if he had a little brother and he answered, "No..... but I am a little brother."

Food for thought.

Dr. Dog – The Beach Lyrics 13 years ago
These lyrics are a bit off, most notably it should be:

"A trail of madness, oh they'll follow and read
til the flow tide comes to swallow the beach."

and

"Well we have since switched to Skull Pot,
But we can't choke it down."

Timothy Seth Avett As Darling – Mama and the Future Lyrics 13 years ago
First of all this song voices the fears that everyone has that they just won't make it where they want to in life. We all hope that we won't be a disappointment.

Second of all, Seth certainly spoke too soon. "Hoping no one else remembers that I failed - made nothing of myself." His music means so much to me and to so many other people that this line has become an outright lie. And thank heaven for that.

This song is perfect.

Best. Love. Song. By. This. Man. Ever.

Timothy Seth Avett As Darling – Forgiving Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I hear it as "So I asked..." not just "So ask.."
Either way, the power and emotion behind that part gives me chills everytime.

This song is such a poetic voice of regret. It is absolutely stunning.

Timothy Seth Avett As Darling – Awaiting The Flood Lyrics 13 years ago
I envy people like Seth Avett who are able to put such beautiful and powerful words to feelings we all have but don't know how to express. This is pure poetry.

Pale Young Gentlemen – An Appeal To St. Peter Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow, what a candid and intense narrative of a person's struggle with their own mortality.

Pale Young Gentlemen – A Shadow On The Wall Lyrics 14 years ago
Anyone else see the parallels to Plato's Allegory of the Cave? It's all about how if you lived your life in a cave you would never even consider what a different way of living could be like, and you wouldn't grasp the concept of the sun.

This song seems like a dialogue between a controversial, open-minded thinker like Plato and the general group of a conservative society who refuses to see another point of view. But that's just my take on it.

What a fantastic bonus track. I love the chorus of this song. Can't wait to see them this Friday.

Andrew Bird – Masterfade Lyrics 15 years ago
here's a direct quote from Andrew:

"I wrote that one when I first moved out to my barn in the country. And I was trying to reconcile being in nature with also trying to set up a studio and struggling with technology. So I’d struggle with it and then go for long walks on the farm and I couldn’t separate the two. I kept seeing zeros and ones in everything. And also as with almost every song it’s not that simple, there’s several threads that go though it. I could also be talking about a relationship, you know. One person in a relationship has their finger on the master fade and can kind of control the reality of the other person with the fade dial. So there’s like three or four stories in that song."

from an interview with the gothamist.

Andrew Bird – Scythian Empire Lyrics 15 years ago
Most good poets are successful in their subtlety. Personally all I know of the Scythians is what I can learn from Wikipedia. But I don't think that Andrew is being pretentious. He creates lyrics out of words that sound asethetically pleasing. Therefore when he is using "$10 words" most likely they were chosen because they simply sound nice. The word Scythian is really beautiful.

Also, watch any interview with Andrew or see him in concert and you'll see that he is anything but pretentious. He chose to live in a barn for goodness sake.

By the way, love the song!

Andrew Bird – Sick of Elephants Lyrics 15 years ago
I was just thinking about this song a lot with the recent election. I'm surprised that anyone daoubted what this song is about, or that Andrew had any political affiliation. No matter what it is you can be assured he is not a Republican. All of his songs denounce everything that the conservative party stands for. Anyway, this song is beautiful.

I think it's so telling of Andrew that he references the War of the Roses. I always thought it was such a romantic name for such an awful event. It's common knowledge that Andrew picks lyrics that sound nice but this shows that they can make sense too. haha.

Foo Fighters – Stranger Things Have Happened Lyrics 15 years ago
Love it. Definitely relationship issues here. He just lost some one and has been waiting around for her to come back.

It is most definitely 'loneliness' not 'lonely miss.'

Does anyone else hear Iggy Pop's 'Nightclubbin' in the guitar of this song? I'm pretty sure it's the exact same melody.

Andrew Bird – Gotholympians Lyrics 15 years ago
It's clear that the time has come for me to buy the Fingerlings cds. They are the only Andrew Bird songs that I don't know, and clearly I'm missing out.

That said, I think this song was perfectly humorous without having heard it sung. It's just funny because I know exactly those kinds of people that just have to be worse off than you. Who cares if you have troubles too, theirs are worse, so don't complain.
haha, he always sings the truth.

Andrew Bird – The Trees Were Mistaken Lyrics 15 years ago
I honestly think that this is one of those Bird songs where he uses his voice purely as an instrument and not as a storyteller. Ironic, because it gives the appearance of being an actual story. The words sound beautiful, they're grouped together with such poetry, but I can't find a solid story or message that he's trying to get across.

I love the line:
am i dead or am i dying or am i simply tired of crying?

Andrew Bird – Simple X Lyrics 15 years ago
I just think of this song as narrating the early morning hours of someone that is not a morning person. Before I have my coffee in the morning I'm kind of like a zombie, everything is just a routine. I'm not thinking about what I'm doing, therefore the morning is filled with simple excercized. Maybe there's something deeper, but I like the idea of it being so simple.

Andrew Bird – Case in Point Lyrics 15 years ago
I definitely don't think it has anything to do with terrorism, I think that kenimator has said it best.
It seems like this is one of Andrew's pessimistic songs. He's talking about the futility of life. People try to find meaning in it by looking to "some non-existant force" i.e. religion. I think that the horse imagery is so strong...
And I'm riding to meet you
On a brown gray speckled mare
But there's something that unnerves me
Like I'm riding on thin air
To me it's like he's trying to accept a belief system, but it's just a concept, it's not concrete.
You know you can't ride the concept of the horse
But still I try
He just can't find the proof of a "higher power" but he tries to find something to believe in anyway.
That's what I get out of it anyway.

Andrew Bird – Cataracts Lyrics 15 years ago
So it took me a couple listens to realize that this wasn't literally about developing a eye malady. haha. But this seriously is one of the most beautifully subdued songs that Mr. Bird has produced.

I agree mostly with Quisquilloso. It's the idea of having others place thoughts and ideas into your head and when you realize they are sour you spit them out and your eyes are then filled with the light, that you can see for your self once you can find your way out of the various "shrubberies" that block your way.

I have no idea if that made any sense to anybody to me. But that's my musing.
