Steely Dan – Black Friday Lyrics 15 years ago
Sounds to me like yet another drug and alcohol abuse song. In my opinion, the protagonist has been clean and sober for some time and is now getting back into drugs and booze, justifying his actions with the idea of "Hey, when it gets bad again, (When black Friday comes) I can always quit. (Leave, Collect dues, Watch everyone else suffer)" Just my opinion. Any thoughts?

Steely Dan – Dirty Work Lyrics 15 years ago
Does anyone else think that this song could not be about a woman? In my opinion, it continues to play on the drug/alcohol abuse trend that is so present in Steely Dan's music. Think about it, he is addicted, knows its bad, doesn't know why he keeps doing it, and can't stop even though he knows the consequences. Hey, it's a stretch, but I sure would continue an ever present theme. Thoughts?

The Wallflowers – Josephine Lyrics 15 years ago
The making ribbons from a paper bag thing is my favorite line in any Wallflowers song. My interpretation of it is that the narrator believes that he is not good enough for "Josephine" and that she is so many levels above him that it's analogous to paper bags and ribbon. He is saying that he would change for her, and become something better. He says that even though she may not believe that he could be a good partner, that he could make himself into something better to fit her, just to make her happy. This is a beautiful way of saying how much he loves her.

Steely Dan – Turn That Heartbeat Over Again Lyrics 15 years ago
The chorus reminds me of that "Oh, shit." moment that occurs when something bad happens and is your fault. In this case, the speaker gets his friend mixed up in some dangerous stuff and his friend dies.

Steely Dan – Night By Night Lyrics 15 years ago
"Night by Night" is a term used in Alcoholics Anonymous that refers to the way that you have to plan your nights out so that you don't go off randomly drinking because there's nothing else to do. The protagonist is tired of living a life of illegality and wants to stop. He plans to do this by living "Night by Night"

Steely Dan – Monkey In Your Soul Lyrics 15 years ago
This is sung from the point of view of a guy who's girlfriend (or best friend, maybe) is under the control of a chemical addiction. In Alcoholics Anonymous, alcoholism is referred to as a "Monkey on your back", because it's a big, ugly, heavy, and sometimes obvious problem that you have to carry around with you no matter where you go. In this case, the "Monkey" has such a tight grasp on the person that he feels that it is in her soul.

Steely Dan – Do It Again Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is obviously about doing the same thing over and over and over again, expecting different results each time.

In the first verse, the man (Referred to as Jack from now on) is not punished for his actions, and is now liable to shoot someone again. It has to be a really, freak loophole thing that someone gets off for murder, so the next time it happens, he won't get so lucky.

In the second verse, Jack has a girlfriend who he trusts and loves. Then he finds out that she is cheating on him and is burned badly. He comes back with another girl who he also trusts (Or he wouldn't be spending all his money on her), and probably feels like she doesn't really love him (Just like the last girl), but ignores the feeling expecting a different outcome.

In the third verse, he promises all his friend that he is a good person, but he goes back to Vegas to gamble, drink, and fornicate his life away. He has (Obviously) been through the whole Vegas thing before, probably lost a lot of money, but keeps coming back expecting to hit it big. He doesn't realize that winning is not in the cards (Hehe...get it? Cards? Sorry)

Jack just keeps coming back doing the same stupid things over and over again expecting different results. This is the technical definition of insanity.
