Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I - V) Lyrics 13 years ago
by the way, I think by "steel breeze" they are referring to their music. the guitar strings are steel based, wound with other metals. indeed, the vibrations created by strumming the strings are picked up and transmitted to the amplifier by means of metal. the breeze is the powerful sound coming out of all the collective amps.
"blown on the steel breeze" refers to Syd's ride to stardom early in his life. just getting carried off by this breeze of powerful music into another world of stardom. same for "rode on the steel breeze".

Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I - V) Lyrics 13 years ago
astounding song. masterfully crafted.

but I have a question. has anybody else heard the child's voice at the end of the song? during the fade out of Part V, and before the first buzzing of Welcome to the Machine I can plainly hear a child saying "Mommy". I know I'm not crazy, I absolutely hear it. Anyone else??

Tom Waits – I'll Be Gone Lyrics 14 years ago
Nothing?? Come on guys, this is an incredible song!!

I haven't been fortunate enough to see a production of "Frank's Wild Years", so I can only understand the song out of context. Being so, I think it's filled with wonderful random bits of imagery, only a few of which relate to suicide. I think it's a poem about a man fantasizing about stripping down existence into raw, primitive instinct, then killing himself after the epiphany proves too much to bear.
Still, I will see "Frank's Wild Years" if a theatre company somewhere near me is bat-shit crazy enough to pull it off...

Primus – The Air Is Getting Slippery Lyrics 14 years ago
Claypool is a very lighthearted lyricist, relying more on visual references to paint a picture than "sub-plots" lying underneath his written words. so, "come on you MINERs for truth and delusion and Shine...". if you truly want to MINE a lyricist's words for deeper meanings there are other lyricists you should check out...
"the air is getting slippery" is well known to anyone who's band has played a show in any confined space, or indeed anyone who's seen a show in a smaller club. it's HUMIDITY, y'all. the song's FULL of references to sweat. "the act of perspiration is far beyond control", "... he sweats like a dancing mule", "the sweat it fills my eyes", etc. Crystal Meth is a (horrible) drug which makes the user sweat. the Slippery air is the heat of the masses at a show. their collectively hot, sweaty bodies and breath, the heat of the lighting, etc.
one more thing. the "Jerry" reference is not to Garcia, although i dig your MINING. it's to their song "Jerry was a Race Car Driver". Claypool has said in several interviews the line references "Race Car" and indeed it fits with the poetry. Primus is onstage performing "Race Car" while the sweaty masses (refered to as barking dogs) enjoy the scene.
Shine On, you crazy MINERS...

Pink Floyd – Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes, the "avant-garde" gem is true, but you need a record player to really hear it well (sorry if some of you kiddies don't know what a record player is, ask your mom). The mad ranting at the end is absolutely Roger Waters (as well as every animal in the cave). And the last line is " . . . and the wind cried Mary", put in as a nod to Jimi Hendrix.
As for song meaning, well, as is the case with soooooo many Floyd songs, because the sounds created by the band are emotional to the point of inducing a state of hyper-sensitivity to any intense listener, song meaning becomes entirely subjective even given the very direct lyrics sometimes applied. Floyd understood this fact themselves and as a result (after the departure of Syd) they created some of the most compelling, interesting, moving music ever recorded. Their music became profound SOUNDSCAPES, actual visual landscapes to be explored emotionally, if you have the guts, a good enough ear, and an imagination able to keep up (and, hey, the intoxicant of your choice couldn't hurt . . .).
Oh shit, gotta go. I'm missing the Jonas Brothers special on TV . . .

Misfits – We Are 138 Lyrics 15 years ago
interesting with the whole "69*2" thing,
like where you're coming from with the whole "THX-1138" idea,
but the song actually refers to a company number from Vietnam. And the lyric is "in the eyes of Saigon."

Pink Floyd – Cirrus Minor Lyrics 15 years ago
filled with wonderful lyrics and colourful musical images . . .
"crater in the sun" ? ? ?
don't forget, kiddies, that this line harkens back to an earlier PF song "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", and they're seeing the crater left by their previous "flight" to the sun . . .
and, just for fun,
"Willow weeping", "River-daughter", for you Lord of the Rings buffs, a thinly disguised nod to Mr. Tom Bombadil and Old Man Willow . . .

Primus – The Ol Diamondback Sturgeon (Fisherman Chronicles, Pt. 3) Lyrics 16 years ago
Claypool does enjoy a good metaphor like any good lyricist, but he also is one of the most lighthearted songwriters i've heard. Don't rule out his sense of humor which permeates most of Primus' material. I think this is just a stoner's poem from the mindset of a fish, yall . . .
