Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 4 years ago
The general meaning of this song is about the bittersweetness of life which can make one lose optimism and hope in the human condition, explained in poetically musical nostalgic reflection upon relatively recent historical events of the songwriter which he found both impactfully beautiful and sad.

Hence the phrase "Bye bye Miss American Pie".

The song often makes me tear.

Coldplay – Til Kingdom Come Lyrics 10 years ago
I believe this song is written from the perspective of a man who is singing this song for his FUTURE beloved, who he will wait for until "Til Kingdom Come". It's about a guy who's been waiting for that special someone his whole life and is still waiting for her, and whom he hopes - though he doesn't know where he's going or what he'll become - will still wait for him. He lays out the attributes of her in the song: one who will "steal[s] his heart", "hold[s] his tongue", "someone who understands", "wouldn't change a single thing", etc. who knows in her heart that he's "waited all these years" and she will do the same for him.

Bon Jovi – This Ain't a Love Song Lyrics 12 years ago
What's so great about this song is that it IS a love song.

He still loves her, he's cried rivers, and he's in a pain. If those things aren't true, then "This ain't a love song." But they are true, and so it is.

Beautiful song. I could interpret this song verse for verse, but I don't need to. Ultimately the message is simply one big "FUCK IT", to put it succinctly.

Nickelback – Never Gonna Be Alone Lyrics 14 years ago
Sometimes the full meaning of the lyrics isn't contained within the video. In other words, the video is simply an interpretation of the song. The song is actually about someone realizing that time is fleeting and that anything can happen to take someone that you love away from you at any moment, and because of this fact making a promise to be there for that person and live every moment to the fullest with the other person.

The video is beautiful.

Def Leppard – Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad Lyrics 14 years ago
Although the point of the song is to be heart wrenching, it is pretty much a love song.

The author of the song has put into words how much he needs this woman and is likening the pain of being away from her to wanting someone they couldn't have. Joe's emotion when he sings it does this theme justice. Thus, the song ends with the lines that aren't the chorus:

"And you're the girl I gotta have
I gotta have you baby, yeah"

Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved Lyrics 14 years ago
It means relationships aren't always great highs and giddy feelings, i.e. "rainbows and butterflies", unless you're in a really, really special relationship. But, it often times takes some work, i.e "compromise" which moves the relationship along in trouble spots and makes it better and more long lasting.

Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved Lyrics 14 years ago
Beautiful song.

I think it's pretty obvious what it's about. It's about a girl who is beautiful, but she's had problems and issues that she tries to to hide ("broken smile") that has caused her a lack of self-esteem and intimacy problems, and the guy who adores her and will always be there for her to make her feel special ("I want to make you feel beautiful") because he can't let her go ("I know that goodbye means nothing at all") due to his love for her which he wants her to realize ("she will be loved").

U2 – Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe this is simply a beautiful song where he pleads to the "wild" woman he loves who repeatedly leaves him ("gypsy heart"), but repeatedly comes back to him because essentially no one ("who's gonna?") can ride her "wild horses" like he can. Who else can do the things that he's done for her? No one. The part where he essentially leads up to the scream of "Don't turn around, and don't look back. Come on now love, don't you look back" is probably the most mesmerizing part of the song. It's like he's using reverse psychology because he knows once she looks back, he'll be entranced again to do her bidding: "the doors you open I just can't close."

It's a kind push and pull type of thing, thematically similar to "With Or Without You".

The song is amazing.

U2 – With or Without You Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is simply about loving someone so much it hurts too much to be with them (in a good way like John Mellencamp's lyrics "it hurts so good") and it hurts too much to be without them. That is what makes this song one of the ultimate love songs. He has her, he knows she's given him her all, but he wants more because that's human nature. We want more and more of a good thing and this desire can never be satisfied. In a sense, the desire, want, and satisfaction of the desire, becomes self-rewarding. There's nothing left to win, and nothing left to lose. This is what true love really is.

Although this song is written from the perspective of a “peeping-tom” imagining that he is making love to a woman, as it is laden with sexual innuendo, I believe it is a beautiful love song written by a man for the woman he loves.

You’ve got your ball
you’ve got your chain
Tied to me tight tie me up again

When a ball and chain is tied to a person by another, it means that their relationship is strong. When it is tied to them tightly, and it is repetitively tied to them again and again, it means it is even more than that: it is unbreakable.

Who’s got their claws
in you my friend
Into your heart I’ll beat again

Something is holding her back in a negative manner from him. Either it’s another relationship or set of ones, not necessarily romantic, or something else. Thus, the reference to claws, which generate the image of these sharp nails piercing the skin, and not letting go. This has nothing to do with him, but it is something external that affects her for one reason or another, that is not allowing her to be open or honest with him. He sees her as a friend first, which is a precondition to a love-based relationship, but he also knows that he’ll always be within her heart as more than that. Previously, something may have removed him from her heart, and it may have been due to whatever had their claws in her. But, he is optimistic that he will regain his presence inside of it.

Sweet like candy to my soul
Sweet you rock
and sweet you roll
Lost for you I’m so lost for you

Just like candy is revered by a child, in particular, a boy, whichever way she moves, while sleeping or otherwise (yes, even sexually), he is completely smitten with her.

You come crash into me
And I come into you,

When something crashes into you, it causes a “boom”, and it’s usually unexpected. That’s how he feels about these feelings he’s having for her. When someone crashes into another, both affect each other, and so he also “comes” into her. This part of the song is also sexually suggestive, and I won’t go into detail how.

Touch your lips just so I know

As the lips are suggestive of love as they are what we kiss with, he’s making a request to her to give him a sign on whether she feels the same way about him as he does about her by requesting her to touch her lips.

In your eyes, love, it glows so

As the eyes are the “windows to the soul”, he can see and feel that she loves him too, even though he desires a sign like the one requested in the previous verse.

I’m bare-boned and crazy for you

He’s completely open and naked (emotionally, psychologically, romantically, etc.), although even more than that, as the metaphor suggests even his skin is completely gone which is the first barrier against body damage from external elements. Also, metaphorically, we wear different skins to protect ourselves on an emotional level. He’s so in love with and is so trusting of her, he feels no need to wear any skins.

In a boys dream

The experience is so surreal, that it feels like the fantasy of a boy who is infatuated with that beautiful woman he sees as unattainable but has somehow captured.

If I’ve gone overboard
Then I’m begging you
to forgive me
In my haste

He’s thinking that maybe he revealed too much, or is being too quick and open with his feelings, and it has scared her away. If so, he’s pleading with her to not hold it against him because of this hold she has over him. It reminds me of Brian Adam’s lyrics “Please forgive me, I know not what I do. Please forgive me, if I can’t stop loving you. Don’t deny me, this pain I’m going through. Please forgive me, if I need you like I do.”

When I’m holding you so girl…
close to me

Although this holding can be seen as physical, it is also metaphorical. She’s very near to him, very close.

Hike up your skirt a little more
and show the world to me
Hike up your skirt a little more
and show your world to me

This is the most sexually suggestive part of the song, but it is more than that. He’s asking her to open up, to let her emotional guard down, to become naked, and uses sexual imagery to do so. Everyone knows what a woman’s skirt hides, so I will leave it at that. It represents something private, not to be given lightly, and treasured. What’s key in these lines, is he moves from the impersonal, as in a “boy’s dream” - “the world” - to the personal, as in reality - “your world” - when he requests her to essentially show everything to him.

Oh I watch you there
through the window
And I stare at you
You wear nothing but you
wear it so well

She not only looks physically beautiful to him when naked as he looks at her through the window, watching her through her eyes - again, which are the “windows to the soul” - he sees her soul as beautiful when it is bared. She’s beautiful without the front of clothing, and without her own self-imposed, personal barriers.

Tied up and twisted,
the way I’d like to be
For you, for me, come crash
into me

He doesn’t care if he’s all tied up and twisted with emotions for her, this emotional binding made explicit through the imagery of physical binding and coming full circle with the beginning of the song, it’s the way he wants to be. So he says, “crash into me” for the sake of both of us.

I’m the king of the castle,
you’re the dirty rascal

Playfulness is part and parcel of a love-based relationship.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Black Balloon Lyrics 16 years ago
The song's lyrics are clearly written about drug addiction, in particular, the heroin addiction of Robby's girlfriend/wife, but I think the song has a more general import. It is about the mutual interconnectedness between two people, and how each affects the other, even in some of the most darkest circumstances, changing both for the better. Only he could help her - "a thousand other boys could never reach you. How could I have been one?". The black balloon and the spoon are obviously heroin references. He led her out her addiction to it. But, at the same time, she was an answer to his prayer, as he 'almost fell into the (same) hole' in her life (heroin addiction), because through her, he saw the negative impact it had on her life. The womb is a source of comfort, as well as source of nourishment - the heroin serves as that. But, it's all a lie. People do drugs to escape from a reality that is harsh, where lies are told and love doesn't seem to exist - "you know the lies they always told you, and the love you never knew." But, life is more than the negativity that seems to surround people's lives - "what's the things they never showed you?" The longer she exists in this state, her true importance wanes, and it affects the world around her, and "angels fall" without her there. The ending is a plea to let me lead you home - out of the drug addiction - and become the angel "that you became to me", which circles back to almost falling into that hole in her life. It's a hopeful song, that portrays that one can become an angel for others even in the most darkest of circumstances. That's my 2 cents.
