Nelly Furtado – Promiscuous (featuring Timbaland) Lyrics 15 years ago
oh and don't feed me the shit that this song is not actually about being "promiscuous". even if the song seems to state in the end how it's about a relationship, everything else in the song is obviously giving off a pretty slutty vibe. no one except for mania fans will pay attention to the possible "relationship" behind this song. this is the reason why 13 year olds are running around desperately for sex in the US. at least i guess it made huge amounts of money for her. yipee.

i don't care what everyone says about this supposedly awesome song.
it's rather disappointing to me.
if getting fucked by a bunch of random drunk shitheads and being able to flaunt it is sexy, i'd say society is quite fucked up.
it's sad to see how there is only a tiny amount of comments on the Powerless page compared to this one. sure, one night stands might be desirable to some people. but it sure as hell killed her a little inside me when portrayed so lightly in a song. women should stop being portrayed as sexdolls... it's so degrading for me as a girl.

the melody and beat itself is rather addictive. it's really just the title and lyrics. i dont know why they even put these kind of songs up on this website... the title is pretty self-explanatory.

Nelly Furtado – Powerless (Say What You Want) Lyrics 15 years ago
i so agree with GracieGurl... i believe artists these days just lose the "soul" that should live in their music. i fell in love with this song in 6th grade, and still love it. i think most music has sadly intentionally become another way to sell and advertise. "Promiscuous Girl" was her lowest point in her music. it really shows in our music today, how society's morals and requirements have become so screwed up. if sexy is about being promiscuous, i'd rather not be sexy.

anyway, i'll try to explain the meaning to this song.

this song is clearly about the media taking away what makes us all the individual, original people we are, and replacing it with what they believe should be the "ideal" to the public. it's about the media taking away your soul for the sole purpose to sell.

very ironic, no?

Zebrahead – Someday Lyrics 15 years ago
i can clearly explain this, since i've been through it before.

it's about how you desire someone very bad, but how the person is oblivious of your existence. when i was a freshman in high school, there was this one boy named Luke who i madly had a crush on. the problem was, i was just another face in the crowd to him. i would stand by his locker on lunch breaks in hopes to be able to maybe say "hi" to him, but i would always end up just watching him but his books in his locker out of intimidation, until he walked away with his friends. i knew he wasn't interested in me, so i kept swallowing my pride and not asking him out just so i could avoid rejection and keep my own pride. i always wished that someday, just someday, i would be there in his life. like ALYMAC says, it's not as cute of a love song as it may sound. it's rather ironically sad.

but hey, it's still my fave ZH song of all time. fo sho.

Blur – Coffee & TV Lyrics 16 years ago
why do some people here actually interpret this as a love song? the line "and agree to marry me" does not determine that it is a love song. this song is purely about someone who can't learn to be social, most likely because of alcoholism as 'ok' previously stated. it's a song about reaching out for a helping hand of a lover, a friend, or even a complete stranger who will be there with you to see the suffering through.

"our ears are full but you're empty
holding out your heart"

this expresses what it feels like to feel crowded in our mind by your desires (alcohol) and thoughts. i like to interpret the "noise" in his ears as the paranoid little man screaming for help in his head. he also later talks about going to the country (a quieter place), but then his insecurity and lack of self-confidence hits him again, and he is sucked back into the abyss of his own paranoia. "sociability is hard enough for me" explains this very clearly.

Now, back to the "agree to marry me" part. this part may confuse the listener at first (i suddenly lost track of the message of the song when i read this verse on the lyrics card for the first time), and that is perfectly normal. i like to believe that since this song IS based on the guitarist's past alcoholism crisis - that this line is probably what the narrator in this song says to a girl he just met at a bar/pub. drinking clouds your judgement, and this man might have jokingly proposed to a girl or several girls before that he had gotten hammered with in a bar. he is reaching out for happiness, and to him, it comes in a bottle. he sees anything that is even only slightly positive as a doorway to true happiness. but till he can overcome this, he must try to enjoy his "Coffee and TV".

argh my fingers hurt now from the typing.

Marcy Playground – Paper Dolls Lyrics 16 years ago
i don't understand why this song is not as popular as it should really be. i think this is my favorite Marcy song of all time. it talks about becoming a teenager, the shocking but rather helpful discoveries that come in the process, and the sad fact that the words your parents had fed you when you were younger all start to suddenly sound like rather unhelpful bullshit. Becoming a teenager is about discovering the world, its brutal realities, and most importantly, yourself.

Who's the captain of this ship?
I think it's sinking
I know, I don't know
What I know I don't know
What was I thinking?

These lines speak of how as you enter your teen years, the ship (life) that had been navigated by the captain (parent(s)) starts to slowly sink (fade away). "what was i thinking?" clearly translates to "why the fuck was i believing all the lies they were feeding me?".

Paper dolls
Here for the folding

the "paper doll" is the kid, who needs to start getting "folded up" (shaped up)

Afraid to dance
Don't talk to strangers
Avoid romance
Read what the sign says

these are all the familiar kinds of restrictions and stereotypical characteristics that a parent might want for his/her child - unfortunately (or rather fortunately) the kid hears it all as "blah blah blah blah"

when you feel like everything is suddenly clear to you, doesn't feel so good to be alive?
