Desaparecidos – Man and Wife, the Latter (Damaged Goods) Lyrics 15 years ago
"I’m growing out my hair
Like it was when I was single
It was longer than I’d know you
I had no money then, I had no worries then at all
But with such a high standard of living
I just feel like I’m dying"

And he DID grow out his hair! haha!
I wish he would have kept his long hair, it made some of the teeny-boppers go away. *cue scenester attack*

Just though I might mention that.
Anyways, I love this song. Desa was an awesome band. Though I can never pronounce or spell the name... This song is near my favorite.

Bright Eyes – Sunrise, Sunset Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song, and it was also one of my first Bright Eyes songs. Amazing. This song is fantastic in every way.
I, too, think it is about Bipolar. Every line seems to describe it.

And now for my long and boring interpretation:

“Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset, swiftly go the days
Sunrise, sunset, you wake up then you undress, it always is the same
The sunrise and the sunsets, you're lying while you confess, keep trying to explain
The sunrise and the sunsets, you realize then you forget what you've been trying to retain”

Here it begins it by making an image in our head of watching days pass over and over again (A cycle of sunrises and sunsets, this is an important theme). The days represent the total, the sunrises and sunsets represent current moods, parts of the total. Hard to explain. The next line “you’re lying while you confess, keep trying to explain” Is explain the confusion of who you are. You don’t know who you are, so when you confess to something you are actually lying (Because you can’t confess to anything if you don’t know who you are), and then you can’t explain yourself. And then “you realize then you forget what you’ve been trying to retain” is explaining the cycle from knowing something (and retaining it) to forgetting something (and not being able to retaining it).

”But everybody knows it's all about the things that get stuck inside of your head
Like the songs your roommate sings, a vision of her body as she stretches out on your bed
And she raised her hands in the air, asked you when was the last time you looked in the mirror
Because you've changed
Yeah, you've changed”

Here he mentions another thing about a mirror. If we go back to his mirror metaphor (That he uses all too often), it describes the views of a person and themselves (in general). So she asks him “when was the last time you looked in the mirror? Because you’ve changed” Saying that the cycle keeps changing him. (and later, “you’re manic, or you’re depressed”). So his views and himself are constantly changing in this cycle.

”The sunrise, the sunsets, you're hopeful and then you regret, the circle never breaks
With a sunrise and a sunset, there's a change of heart or address, is there nothing that remains?
For a sunrise or a sunset, you're manic or you're depressed, will you ever feel okay?
For a sunrise or a sunset, your lover is an actress, did you really think she'd stay?”

The first line makes the cycle part clear (you’re hopeful then you regret, the circle never breaks”), and it also defines the cycle, hopefulness and the regret. And then this next line, “there’s a change of heart or address” The change of heart is not being able to stay in a relationship, and always changing (moods, personality, etc). The change of address is the leaving; running away from things (or to quote another song, “walking away”). And then the next line, “your lover is an actress, did you really think she’d stay?” Is interested since Conor Oberst was in an apparent relationship with Wynona Rider at this time. Could be a coincidence. Anyways, this, I think, is saying that acting is kind of like the cycle, how it’s never the real them. The cycle (Manic or depressed) is never the true them. And then the “did you really think she’d stay?” may be referring to the change of address (“walking away” from trouble).

”For a sunrise or a sunset, you're either coming or you just left, but you're always on the way
Towards a sunrise or a sunset, a scribble or a sonnet, they are really just the same
To the sunrise or a sunset, the master and his servant have exactly the same fate
It's a sunrise and a sunset, from a cradle to a casket, there is no way to escape
The sunrise and a sunset, hold your sadness like a puppet, keep putting on the play”

And then another leaving/coming idea, “you’re either coming or you just left, but you’re always on the way” can work both metaphorically or literally. Literally I think its referring back to the “walking away” idea and also exactly what the line says. And metaphorically, its referring to the cycle (In the shape of a circle), you leave one spot on the circle (The manic/depressed), but you always are going around the circle and always come back to the next part and then again back the part you were just at. And the next line, “a scribble or a sonnet, they are really just the same” is also metaphorical. It means that the scribble is kind of the depressed stage, and the sonnet is the manic stage, and they are both part of the same circle, or cycle. This next line, “the master and his servant, have exactly the same fate” is meaning that the servant is the depressed stage and the master is the manic, and they always turn into each other, so they have the same fate (They both go around the same circle/cycle). And then the next line is also similar, “from a cradle to a casket, there is no way to escape” the cycle is now going from a cradle to a casket, meaning the cradle is the manic and the casket is the depressed. But there is no way to escape (Similar to an earlier line, “the circle never breaks”). And then this last line, “hold your sadness like a puppet, keep putting on the play” is saying that the cycle is similar to a play, which relates to an earlier line “your lover is an actress” meaning that the cycle is not the real them, or something like that…

”But everything you do is leading to the point where you just won't know what to do
At that moment you may laugh but there is someone there who will be laughing louder than you
So it's true, the trick is complete, you become everything you said you never would be
You're a fool; you're a fool!”

The first line is going back to something earlier I said, about how the circle always repeats itself and “the circle never breaks” or “there is no way to escape” The next line is confusing, but it means
The next line, “So its true, the trick is complete, you become everything you said you never would be” Is now comparing the cycle to a “trick” And also saying that you are becoming someone else, and are always lying when you say who you are, because the stages always change and thereof you are never the same person. He ends this part with “You’re a fool! You’re a fool!” which is fairly straightforward.

”Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset, sunrise and the sunsets
Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, the sunsets, the sunrise, the sunsets
Sunrise, sunset, go home to your apartment, put the cassette in the tape deck and let that fever play
Sunrise, sunset, where are you Arienette?
Where are you Arienette?”

At first he repeats the “sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset” which is just making the continuous cycle more apparent. The sun continues to set, and then rise, like the cycle. Now, the sunrise seems to be the manic and the sunset is the depressed. And after a while I begin to thing by the manic and the depressed cycle he is talking about Bipolar Disorder.
And so the cassette tape is now being compared as well to the cycle. How the cassette plays and repeats, I guess. And then we go back to another common thing from Conor, Arienette. I have not exactly thought about the whole Arienette idea all that much yet, I’m still working on it. But to me I think Arienette is a type of sanity, or safety, maybe. So then he’s asking where the sanity/safety is.

Maybe I took the song too metaphorical or maybe I thought about it too much/too little. Maybe I accepted the bipolar idea to fast and let that control the rest of my thoughts.
But I also have to comment on his singing in this song. It also goes along with the theme of the sunrise and the sunset (The manic and the depressed), where he’ll switch from loud to soft; from manic to depressed.

Bright Eyes – A Scale, a Mirror, and Those Indifferent Clocks Lyrics 15 years ago
This is one of my favorites from Conor (And therefor my favorites ever).

I'm gonna put my long and pointless interpretation now (Its unfinished, I have to add a few things, especially about the mirror):

“Here is a scale, weigh it out
And you will find, easily
More than sufficient doubt
That these colors you see
Were picked in advance
By some careful hand
With an absolute concept of beauty”

I see this as the doubt of a god (“Some careful hand with an absolute concept of beauty”). When you take the reasons for his existence and the reasons for non existence on a scale, he says you’ll see easily that the reasons for doubt make more sense to him. He’s trying to make logical sense and figure out if god exists. And maybe alongside fate, as well (“We’re picked in advance”). The doubt of fate and god, I guess. The concept of beauty is the views of the god, picking out people to be chosen by what he thinks is right, I suppose (For instance, a god picking people to go to Heaven based on things out of the bible and such).

“They are smeared and these blurs
Come in random order
To color the eyes of your former lovers
Hers were green like July
Except when she cried
They were red”

I think the smeared and blur might be referring to the last part, “An absolute concept of beauty” Saying that the absolute concept of beauty (The view of our ‘god’, and what he thinks is right/beautiful) is actually quite vague and random, maybe. And then he makes the metaphor to the beauty of his former lovers eyes, and saying that the color (Or, beauty/view of our god) changes depending on how she was feeling (Or how humans were feeling in that point in history).

“Now I know a disease
That these doctors can’t treat
You contract it the day
You accept all you see
It is a mirror and a mirror is all it can be
A reflection of something we’re missing”

This part seems to me that it’s about seeing the world through your own perception and not seeing it any other way, and accepting it that way as the truth (Which is what people tend to do). But the very last line makes it seem like he’s also describing the idea that his perception of the world is different, which explains the first two lines. He’s saying that everyone sees the world through their own perception, and his (Or to be accurate, whoever is supposed to be singing) perception is different, so they’re not understanding what he’s saying, and he may view that as a bad thing (“A disease”?). When you look out into the world all you can see is a mirror, because all you can see is your own perception. And that’s something no one else can change (“These doctors can’t cure”).

“And language just happened
It was never planned
And it’s inadequate to describe where I am
In the room of my house
Where the light has never been
Waiting for this day to end”

Again he’s describing having a slightly different mind that thinks a bit different, maybe. He’s trying to describe the way he’s thinking but the human language just doesn’t fit his thoughts. So he’s stuck in a dark room, which means he doesn’t really know where he is, or maybe that others don’t know where he is, and so they don’t understand where he’s coming from and what he’s trying to say? As well as them not understanding him. And he’s waiting for the day to end, which may mean death, or it may mean that the next day is kind of ‘the answer’ or a way to explain things, a way for people to understand him.

“And these clocks keep unwinding
And completely ignore
Everything that we hate or adore
Once the page of a calendar is turned it’s no more
So tell me, then, what was it for?
Oh, tell me, what was it for?”

The first two lines seem to describe how time moves on without our permission, and time doesn’t know if we have to go to work or if we’re seeing an old friend, the time has to move on and we can’t do anything about it. Time is just time, and that is all it is, we can’t change that or do anything about it. The next line is similar, saying that we have to accept that time is over, and we also can’t do anything about it. And then the very last two lines may be asking what we did with the time, or if it was worth it? Questioning life, maybe? Asking what all that time was really all about, the meaning of life, the meaning of time, the meaning of everything. I don’t think its supposed to be viewed as sorrowful or regretful, its just a question.

Bright Eyes – Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and to Be Loved) Lyrics 15 years ago
"Well the animals laugh from the dark of the wilderness
A baby cries hard in an apartment complex
As I pass in a car buried under the influence
The city's driving me out of my mind"

Of course this is talking about how humans should try to act a bit more like animals. Animals are laughing away in the forest while he we are with all our conflicts and issues. The animals are laughing at us and our stupidity, I think.

"I've seen a child he's caught in the sad trap of gravity
He falls from the lowest branch of the apple tree
And lands in the grass, and weeps for his dignity
Next time he will not aim so high
Yeah next time neither will I"

That is amazing songwriting, right there. That deserves so much more attention then its getting. Isaac Newton first noticed gravity when he saw the apple fall from the apple tree. Think about what Conor did here, its just so amazing and clever. I really don't think that was coincidence, Conor definitely put that like that on purpose. He's comparing the apple to the boy. Which is.. just... wow. Thats a line that really should be cherished. Its just so clever. And its also talking about too high of hopes, but it ties in with the apple and gravity so perfectly, that it has to do with society and expectations. I can't perfectly explain what I mean, but god, its amazing songwriting. I think I'd go as far as to say that that part is better then even most of Bob Dylan's songwriting (Don't kill me! I'm a huge fan of Bob Dylan, I love him).

"Now a mother takes loans out, sends her kids off to colleges
Her family's reduced to names on a shopping list
While a coroner kneels beneath a great wooden crucifix
He knows there's worse things than being alone
And so I've learned to retreat at the first sign of danger
I mean, why wait around, if it's just to surrender?
And ambition, I've found, can lead only to failure
I do not read the reviews
No, I am not singing for you"

This is also just so amazingly written. Theres that line directed at religion. And the line about the college and shopping list is an extremely clever way to say whats he's saying, even if its obvious. And I must point out the last two lines... That right there? Thats Bob Dylan. I just have to say it, thats definitely very similar to Bob Dylan. Its so simple, and yet that lyric just gets me every time. "I do not read the reviews, No I am not singing for you" More bands and singers should be like Conor.

"Well, I stood dropping a coin into the pit of a well
And I would throw my whole billfold if I thought it would help
With all these wishes I make, I should buy something real
At least a telephone to call home
Well, my teachers, they built this retaining wall of memory
All those multiple choices I answered so quickly
And got my grades back, and forgot just as easily
But at least I got an A
And so I don't have them to blame"

Yet another beautiful part of the song. The part about the A is just so true. People sometimes care too much about things that shouldn't matter, such as perfect grades. I've been there, I've definitely been there. And the wishes part is also very clever. Saying that wishing is going to do us any good anymore, wow, he says things in such a amazing way.

"Well I should stop pointing fingers, reserve my judgement
Of all those public action figures, the cowboy presidents
So loud behind the bullhorn, so proud they can't admit
When they've made a mistake
Well, poison ink spews from a speechwriter's pen
He knows he don't have to say it so it, it don't bother him
'Honesty', 'accuracy', is just 'popular opinion'
And the approval rating's high
And so someone's gonna die"

That whole part is simply amazing and I love how he's talking about 'Cowboy presidents.' This whole part reminds me of Bob Dylan, in a way. Gosh, its just so true. The ink spews from his pen... and he doesn't have to say it.. wow... Its hard to explain my ideas on this, as well.

"Well, ABC, NBC, CBS bullshit
They give us fact or fiction, I guess an even split
And each new act of war is tonight's entertainment
We're still the pawns in their game
As they take eye for an eye, until no one can see
We must stumble blindly forward, repeating history
Well I guess we all fit into your slogan in that fast food marquee
Red-blooded, white skinned, oh and the blues
Oh, and the blues, I got the blues, that's me!
(That's me!)
That's me!"

'We're still the pawns in their game' Is another line that Bob Dylan even used before. its just so amazing how Conor reminds me of him. My favorite part of this part is definitely the "As they take eye for an eye, until no one can see, We must stumble blindly forward, repeating history" Because its just such a clever way to describe what happens to humankind and history, and he also connects to ideas, "Take an eye for an eye" and "repeating history" and he connects them in a way that makes so much sense. Very insightful.

"Well I awoke in relief, my sheets and tubes were all tangled
Weak from whiskey and pills in a Chicago hospital
And my father was there, in a chair by the window
Staring so far away
I tried talking, just whispered, "So sorry, so selfish"
He stopped me and said, "Child, I love you regardless
There's nothing you could do that would ever change this
I'm not angry, it happens
But you just can't do it again"

This part is most definitely about suicide. But I did notice the part about Chicago, which may even be a reference to Laura Laurent since its on the same album? He tends to do that a lot, Fevers and Mirrors is a good example of that. But anyways, I almost want to say this is about how society isn't trying to fix things, at the end he says, "But you just can't do it again" As if the father isn't really trying to help, and wants to avoid the subject.

"So now I try to keep up, I've been exchanging my currency
While a million objects pass through my periphery
Now I'm rubbing my eyes, cause they're starting to bother me
I've been staring too long at the screen
But where was it when I first heard that sweet sound of humility?
It came to my ears in the goddamn loveliest melody
How grateful I was then to be part of the mystery
To love and to be loved
Let's just hope that is enough"

The part about the screen is very clever, he's talking about a Television Set, and he's talking about how the media and the news disappoints him and he finds its 'bothering' I guess. And also, I just love the 'goddamn loveliest melody' Because it just such a contradiction, and it really makes you think, I guess. And of course, as always, Conor wraps up the song perfectly as he sings, "To Love, and to be loved, lets just hope that is enough" And its hard for me to describe exactly what that means to me, but god, its such a good ending to a perfect song.

Conor is... absolutely... amazing. And this song is obviously a piece of art that has so much meaning I'm still trying to figure out exactly what every lines about, after hearing the song about a million times. Its so deep that some people may not even realize it at first, I didn't the first time I heard it. And then the second time I said, "Wow, what the hell?" and then I just kept listening and listening. And god, this song is simply perfect. I wouldn't fix anything about it, this may be Conor's best example of songwriting, or maybe not, he's got some really good songs. But I hope he makes another song that can compare to this one some time soon, I'd enjoy another masterpiece, but he's got a lot of masterpieces, just some of them I wouldn't say were as good as this one.

Conor Oberst – I Don't Want to Die (In the Hospital) Lyrics 15 years ago
This song, I think, just may be my favorite on the album. It kind of reminds me of "At The Bottom of Everything" in a sense thats its just so twisted, but yet it sounds so happy. I love it. And the meanings are similar too. It also reminds me of Easy/Lucky/Free as well.

God, I can't get enough of this song. "They give me all these flowers and big balloons!" Is sung so amazing. And of course the morphine line was amazing, as everyone else said

And someone brought it up already, but at the end he makes the transition from "I don't want to die in the Hospital" to "I ain't going to die in the Hospital" and also the transition from "You gotta take me outside" to "You're gonna to take me outside" I thought that was very clever, and I smiled when I heard him sing that. Conor has always been good at knowing when to transition.

Its pretty obvious that the song is about enjoying life while you have it, and it seems like a cliched idea, but Conor makes it seem so fresh, and he sings the song like a story. Its amazing how he makes this song with such a unique meaning, but at first it seems so cliched. I can't explain in words how much I love this song, I really cant. And its hard to exactly explain what it means to me, but god, I love it.

Conor Oberst – NYC-Gone, Gone Lyrics 15 years ago
It definitely sounds fun. But I also hope Conor continues to make his amazing lyrics. But there was a few songs on the album which had really good lyrics. This one was probably the worst lyrically, but it also had a very fun sound, so it was okay to have it on the album. I still like the song, and I listen to it whenever I want that fun feeling. Sometimes the simple lyrics just make me feel better.

But gosh, its weird not calling this a Bright Eyes album. But I'm glad he finally did a solo album. I think he deserves the recognition. I hope he continues to do solo albums, but maybe still stay in Bright Eyes, because thats a wonderful band. But the solo album made his singer/songwriter status official.

Ironicly, when I was having a melt down and kind of a an anxiety, I listened to this song, and I felt so much better.

I thought I just HAD to mention that. It was today, and god, this song helped. I was crying and freaking out, and then this song popped up on my ipod, and I just started humming along and then I started singing along and I couldn't help but smile. Now I just keep listening to it, I used to love this song, and now I love it even more, because it helped me through one of my own panic attacks.

Bright Eyes – True Blue Lyrics 15 years ago
XianSnake (On first page) pretty much typed my exact thoughts when I heard the song, so I agree with them.

I think the song is generally about the fans that really understand his lyrics and aren't just into him because he's getting popular or because he's good looking. He's kind of thanking his real fans, and not the posers, I guess.

But I love this song and I think he really makes his lyrics shine. I've never been so much in love with such a lighthearted sounding song with such simple sounding lyrics. His rhyming is perfect, and his words are so simply beautiful. I love the part about the blue bag and the doctor. It kind of reminds me of "Bowl Of Oranges" with the part about the doctor. And I also love the "We banged on blue drums and called it bluegrass" and I also love the part, "Now I don't, know that much about you, But I like you because you are true blue" because I think it describes the interpretation.

I love everything Conor makes, though. Gosh, he's a genius, I swear.

This is a beautiful song. But I think that about any of his songs, don't I?

Well, my favorite part is definately the part:
"They say my name like a guessing game
"Is that really you?"
No, I don't think it ever was"

It just is so simple and complex at the same time. He makes such grand meaning from a seemingly simple phrase. Its beautiful. and it matches how I feel so much. He's describing how people always thought they knew him, and he's the only one who really knew himself. Or maybe, like the first comment suggests, he is talking about his fans, which could be quite possible. It does seem to match. Either way, its perfect.

Bright Eyes – When the President Talks to God Lyrics 16 years ago
Though at first I didn't like this song because it was so to the point, it has definitely grown on me. It may not have Conor's usual poetic lyrics, they still hit strong. Very strong. Politically, this song is fantastic. And thats what he was aiming for.

I showed this to a friend who thought it offensive because they were very religious and they thought Conor was bashing God. Well, let me just make this clear (I'm sure someone has before me, but I will anyway), Conor is definitely not bashing religious or god in this song. What he IS making fun of is the way the president hides behind the excuse of "God told me to" and not taking responsibility. He's saying the presidents should stop pretending like he's doing what he does because of God, because its not God telling him to do things, its himself.

And I think its beautiful. But in a different way then Conor usually makes thinks beautiful. Which is refreshing, actually. Because then I know Conor can be talented in different ways and he won't always be making the same music. He's constantly changing.

Also, I love Conor's (And Mike's and Nates! Don't forget them!) boldness to play this live in a cowboy suit. Fantastic and brave. Conor stands out from the crowd, and I just keep getting more impressed with him the more I listen and get obsessed. He's not going anywhere anytime soon. He's going to be around making music for a while, I'm putting my trust in that. I've become an avid listener to this guy. I think he's really gonna be big, a legend, even.

He's a genius, simply put. And this may not be his best song, but it sure shows his political views.

Dont know if this has already been established but for the chorus...

Sheeps are people who follow others. Goats are... hm... guess the opposite. I'm kind of thinking this song is a jab at religion. As in to say... religion is a cult. Hard to put it lightly, really.
When you try to reject religion, they say you go to Hell. And when you accept it and follow the others around you, you go to heaven. I love the chorus, personally.

I'm not sure if John, the songwriter, was athiest, but from this it kinda sounds like it. When he's saying he doesnt want to go to Sunset Strip, I think he's talking about Heaven. *shrugs* I dont know really.

Though, you gotta love the linen, "As soon as you're born, you start dying,
So you might as well have a good time,"

I hear people saying its a jab at America, but I kinda don't think so. I really think this song is about a realization of how things are. I didn't read all th comments because I don't got the patience, I only read a few, so excuse me if I repeat things. I think I do that a lot

Conor said in an interview that when he was younger he used to be an idealist, but as he grew up he became more of a realist. He said this song was just about that realization of reality. Gotta love that guy. Though he also said he wrote it in a hotel room when he was having a panic attack or something, t calmed him down.

Some of the song seems very happy, but certain lines really get to me in a deep way.
"Leave the old town drunk on his wooden stool" Is really quite a sad line.
"Leave the poor black child in his crumbling school today" That one is the one I think is the line that does kinda seem like a jab at America, witch it could be I guess. Or maybe Conor rely is just accepting it.
"Leave the novelist in his daydream tune
Leave the scientist in his Rubik's Cube
Let the true genius in the padded room remain" That may be my favorite lryics from this song, it really makes me think. Love it.

Thanks again, Conor, for delivering some lryics that surprise me yet again.

Loooooove it. Absolutely looooove it. But I love everything by Conor.

It almost scares me, the song, the lryics, all of it. It makes me want to think that Conor isn't what we all think he is. Maybe he's sick of the lie. Maybe he's really not the lyrical genius, maybe all that emotion he puts into his stuff is all just fake. But how can anyone fake that? It sounds too sincere. It sounds too absolutely real and perfect. What if Conor isn't as genius as we all take him as?

What if he's just putting on this play for us, and making up a story character when he acts the way he does, and creates the music he does. He's making a story book character... God, that idea freaks me out, and I don't even know why. its just his lryics seem too perfect. How could anyone make songs that so many people can find themselves in? It just seems all to good to be true. I remember in an interview once he said that he thought people took him too seriously, that the band was for fun, or something like that...

I want to beleive its fake, and yet I can't. Conor seems too sincere. ^_^ I can't help but love his work.

Besides, this song might just be about how other bands are like this. My mind keeps wondering to Fall Out Boy, or something like that. Faking sorrow for a larger fan base.
And maybe its about how others are putting a label on Conor, and he's tired of it. People keep labeling him emo, and folk, and a whole bunch of other stuff. When really he justs wants to make the music and be himself with no one else discriminating him because of what they thought he was. All the critics and the fans trying to make him be something.

I'm just a stupid fan, though, what do I know. rofl

Bright Eyes – Drunk Kid Catholic Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a wonderful song that really speaks to me.
Though some people are assuming that he's still catholic, I kinda doubt it. My mom grew up in a catholic household and went to a catholic school, and she turned out very atheist. Actually, in an interview he said that he would classify himself as agnostic. But thats just minor details, It doesn't have to much with the song, I just thought I'd mention it.

I agree with everyone with the comparison of drunks and catholics (Or, really, religious people in general).

Escaping from reality, is what I think of. When you get drunk you kind of lose touch with reality and you feel, in a way, more secure. They try to get rid of their troubles and their worries with drinking. While Catholics do it with their religion. They try to, hm, this may sound offending, but they try to lose touch with reality and try to secure themself in a fantasy. A fantasy of the safety of afterlife. They wait for something to save them, and they try to repress worries that way. Its hard for me to explain what I mean. Heh....

The drunks wait for something to come on its own and they use their alcohol to feel free and safer.
The catholics wait for afterlife and they use their religion for safety.

I tried to sum it up but it didn't turn out well... Oh whatever, I guess it doesn't matter if anyone gets what I'm talking bout. Why do I make such long posts?

I love this song so much. And the guy from The Faint sings well with Conor, I think. But the lryics are the best.

Bright Eyes – Something Vague Lyrics 16 years ago
I gotta say, this is one of my favorite songs. Conor is so good at making a visual in your mind and then making you feel such strong emotion... And this one does it, big time.

The first part feels so empty. And yet still so rich in emotions. Emptiness and loneliness... Wow, its just amazing.
"You're not really sure
What you're doing this for
But you need something to fill up the days"
Love that part to death. It really describes the first verse. Whenever he sings it I get that overwhelming feeling of emptiness; of wanting more. Loneliness, maybe.

Then the part with the dream gets me near tears every time. He's in front of everyone, glowing, and everyones watching. They're examining him; they're judging him. It describes my current life so well. Its him looking back at his teenage years, when everyones so judgmental in school. You feel vunlurable and open. He describes it so well with such simple words. Simply amazing. On the first page I read someone say alienation, witch is also very accurate, I think. He's alone in the air with everyone staring at him... Sounds like alienation to me. The words fit me so perfectly. I love his lryics.

And then the last verse confuses me. He's, like, asking if the dream was real or something. Or maybe he's asking if the alienation is true. And then the last line "Something more like a feeling" makes me think that he was trying to say that the feeling of alienation and vunlurability was all in his head; that everyone feels that way... but its not real.

I don't know what the last verse means, but I love it, it makes me think.

Best songwriter ever, Conor Oberst? Pretty damn close.

The Beatles – Yellow Submarine Lyrics 16 years ago
A lot of people are saying this song doesn't have a meaning... Well I think it does, actually. Its just you need some background information to understand it. But hey, I might be wrong.

I heard somewhere that the military used to use yellow submarines for target practice, they painted it yellow because it was easier to see against the blue or green water. So the yellow submarines were just target practice that ended up getting hit and ruined all the time.

If they DID base the song off that bit of information, then the song makes a lot more sense, to me... Its kinda a sad song, if its true... But it doesn't sound sad, so maybe the yellow submarine thing is just a coincidence.

Plain White T's – Hey There Delilah Lyrics 16 years ago
Even though usually I'm not into mainstream music... I kinda like this song. I don't know why, I guess its just catchy. I find myself singing it sometimes.

Its pretty much just about a long-distance relationship. Theres not much to analyze, really. Pretty straight forward.

My favorite part:

"Our friends would all make fun of us
And we'll just laugh along because
We know that none of them have felt this way"

Pretty good singing, there. I also just like the part when he sings, "Hey there Delilah"

Bright Eyes – Happy Birthday to Me (Feb. 15) Lyrics 16 years ago
I looooove this song so much. One of my favorites. Then again, I don't listen to music all that much. Bright Eyes is my first band that I started liking. Thanks for getting me more into music, Conor!

Its about time. Its about growing up.

-"All eyes on the calendar" Its saying how time has to go by and how he's nervous.
-"With decisions to be made
I'm sure all of them were wrong" He's saying he regrets things he's done in the past.
-"And with these drinks I plan to collapse" I always thought of this kind of like New Years where everyone gets drunk and think of new Year revolutions (Or whatever they're called). And how he's getting drunk so he forgets what he didn't do through the year.
-"And forget this wasted year, these wasted years" Again, a very regretful line.
-"Devoted friends, they disappear" He's talking about how as time moves on friends go away.
-"I guess it's just like breathing and not wanting to" Love this line to death. He's talking about how time has to move on, and you can't stop it. But you want to freeze time so you don't have to do some things (Like say goodbye to devoted friends).
-"Well, I guess that it's typical
To cling to memories you'll never get back again
And to sort through old photographs
Of a summer long ago
Or a friend that you used to know
And there below his frozen face
You wrote the name and that ancient date
And you can't believe that he's really gone
When all that's left is a fucking song"

This whole part has to do with saying goodbye because the time has come. Very sad. This part touches me. Its pretty hard to miss what he's saying. I think this part is pretty straight forward.

-"Some things just can't wait..." God, I love the way he sings this. It really puts a good feel to the song. Well, its saying that time won't stop for anyone.

Bright Eyes – Bowl of Oranges Lyrics 16 years ago
Different people are saying different things. Some people are saying its happy and others are saying its sad. Well, to me, I can see it both ways. I've been listening and reading these lryics over and over again, but I can't make up my mind on what Conor was thinking.
-In the beginning I love the line, "There was a loophole in my dreaming, So I got out of it" and it makes it seem like he's getting out of depression because in a way, it was all in his head (Like a nightmare). But pay attention to the next two lines,
-"And to my surprise my eyes were wide, And already open" Now this is contradicting the happy feeling of the above line. Instead of his depression being all in his head (As in a nightmare), it was actually real.
-The whole doctor thing comes out really happy to me when I first think of it. But the only pessimism I can see is if you think of it as the doctor not being able to help himself.
-"So that's how I learned the lesson, That everyone's alone" This line seems pretty sad, to me. He's talking about the doctor thing but saying everyones alone. I'm still working on this line... I can't find much happy in this one.
-"And your eyes must do some raining, If you're ever gonna grow" This one seems really happy as well. He's saying its okay to cry and sometimes it what makes you feel better. Love it.
-"That's why I'm singing, baby, don't worry
Because now I've got your back
And every time you feel like crying
I'm gonna try to make you laugh
And if I can't, if it just hurts too bad
Then we'll wait for it to pass
And I will keep you company
Through those days so long and black" This whole part seems mostly happy to me. He's helping out a friend just by being there. The next part is the part that gets me.
-"We'll keep working on the problem
We know we'll never solve
Of love's uneven remainders
Our lives are fractions of a whole
But if the world could remain within a frame
Like a painting on a wall
Then I think we'd see the beauty then
And stand staring in awe" Now this could really go either way. At first I thought it was happy, he's saying that even with the bad parts of life, thats only a fraction of life. If you look at the big picture, and think of everything in life, you see its mostly happy. If you could put life on the wall and look at it, it'd be beautiful. Or it could go another way, as if he's saying that it was a painting, as in peoples fake idea of life. As if all the beautiful parts of life are just painted in our imagination. And yet the doctor and girl are still upset, I guess. Or maybe if the world was still, it would look beautiful. But the world is not still, In the beginning he's saying how things are changing. And the changes in the world make it sad, I guess. Its really hard to explain. Eh...
-And of course the last part could also be happy or sad.
"At our still lives posed
Like a bowl of oranges
Like a story told
By the fault lines and the soil"

It could be happy just like the one before this, saying when you see the whole world (Faults and all) then it'd be beautiful. Or its saying "A story told" suggests that the its imagination. As if the world is only happy in our imagination.

I love this song to death because to me, it seems like it could be happy or sad, and maybe thats what Conor wanted. I can't decide on witch one seems more accurate. And maybe he's just talking about life in general, and saying how it can be happy and it can be sad, it just depends on the way you look at it.

Great song. Conor is a genius.

Bright Eyes – Easy/Lucky/Free Lyrics 16 years ago
At first I really had no idea what this song meant.. But now as I really pay attention to the lryics and really listen to it more... I think its about death.

But... a happy death, I guess. Like, the meaning of death. He's talking about how people are all going to the same place and they're all reunited by death and he's... like... thanking death for reuniting him with people?

Death is not hard to do, Death ends the suffering, death has no complications to it. Thats what he's saying, I guess.

He's saying people shouldn't be sad about death and shouldn't fear it. He's... Hm... I guess... Looking at death in a positive way.

"Looking for faces in the clouds
I've got some friends I barely see
But we're all planning to meet
We'll lay in bags as dead as leaves
All together for eternity"

That part is telling the reuniting of him and friends witch is caused by death. They're all heading the same place.

I love this song... So deep. Love ya, Conor!

Bright Eyes – Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh Lyrics 16 years ago
I love helmithair131's interpretation of the song, I never really thought about the girl being pregnant. Good idea.

My take on it was that his girlfriend had cheated on him, and now he's questioning everything she ever said and also questioning life in general. Quite sad.

When he says that she's tearing out her hair and making promises that their love will never die, he's saying that he keeps lieing to every guy, because shes keeping tearing the hair out. So she's using all the guys and one of them includes him.

And I love the last few lines of the first part about the artificial laughing, it just adds to the idea of lieing and faking and cheating.

I absolutely love the end two parts. He's saying how he's questioning himself about everything and he's questioning life.

"I know not who I am" is saying he's now starting question himself.
"Now you must live them, or just not live" now he's questioning life and thinking about suicide.
"Nothing is clear" is pretty straight out. Nothing is clear to him anymore.
"Well where are you now?" again he's questioning things.

Throughout the song he's questioning things, thinking they might be all lies because his girlfriend was cheating and lieing, so everything else could be a lie, right?

Great song, absolutely love it.

Bright Eyes – Lover I Don't Have to Love Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song of Bright Eyes. Though its not their best, it sure is one of their best. Go Conor Oberst!

It seems a lot of people want to connect it to drug use and cocaine. But everyone always thinks songs are about that. I really think this one is about love. I think its sorta like his other song, "Take it Easy (Love Nothing)"

I think its about him wanting to have a superficial lover. You know, love without the strings attached. He sees real love as just pain, so he wants fake love, because its funner, I guess. Or maybe its about prostitution, but the ideas are similar.

"Your tongue in my mouth, trying to keep the words from coming out"
"I asked your name, you asked the time"
"You didn't care to know who else may have been you before"
"I want a lover I don't have to love"
"I want a girl too sad to give a F*ck"
"I want a boy who's so drunk he doesn't talk"

He wants... maybe... sex? But not actually have strings attached to an actual relationship, because a relationship will end in hurt. But just sex wont ever end in pain for him. Its about superficial love.

I love the ending so much. Its contradicts the whole song, as if a confession. Through the whole song hes saying he doesn't want to get hurt and how he doesn't want to care about his lover (Since it ends in pain...), but then in the end he's admitting he DOES want to care deeply about someone, but he's just scared to get hurt. When he's saying, "Then hurt me" he's really saying, "Then love me" since he said earlier that Love WAS hurt.

Love it to DEATH. The lryics speak to me like no other lryics. Conor Oberst is absolute genius. And I don't consider this emo, I consider is GENIUS!

Bright Eyes – I've Been Eating (For You) Lyrics 16 years ago
I keep on reading comments about how the girl is using him... And maybe you guys are right... But it seems like he may be using her, too. I dont know, though.

The basketball thing gets to me. All of his friends are passing her around and they all seem like they're using her, not her using them. I think its might be a guilt song about him using a girl for sex and how he regrets it, and wishes her the best. He, I think, is saying how he used a girl and now after she's gone he's starting to regret the bad things he did to her and how now he wants her back but still wishes her the best....

The reference to the eating disorder is the thing I'm not getting. Eh...

Hey, is Conor Oberst anorexic or bulimic or have any other eating disorder? In Lua he made a reference to an eating disorder, too.

Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life Lyrics 16 years ago
The meaning seems pretty clear. How love changes the way you think and see. Very beautiful , and I love the way Conor sings this.

But theres seem like theres some different ideas about the line, "I'd rather be working for a paycheck, then waiting to win the lottery"

Well heres my take on that line-
I don't see it as settling, I see it more as accepting someone for who they really are. Winning the lottery suggest someone perfect, and working for a paycheck suggests someone with flaws. While winning the lottery is near impossible, and working for a paycheck is more certain and you can believe in it. When he's working for a paycheck he's in a relationship with a real person with flaws but he accepts the flaws and the relationship becomes stable. While hes waiting to win the lottery he's waiting for someone "perfect" and ends up not having a relationship at all (Or, in money terms, broke!).

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 16 years ago
I forgot to add some things...

-"Here we are now, entertain us" is showing how people can be very rash and how they just want fun but dont want to work for it... Its hard to explain... I cant find the right words to describe what I mean...
-"Load up on guns, bring your friends" means how everyones at war with each other in school. You know, different cliques against other cliques, I guess.
-"It's fun to lose and to pretend" means how everyone has a facade.
-Our little group has always been, And always will until the end" is about cliques in school.

The whole song is about how he rejects all this kinda stuff... He's making fun of teenagers who care about all this stuff, really. (Read my last post above, and it will be a bit more clear).

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about how he rejected mainstream ideas and how teenagers were followers.

-"Shes over bored, and self assured. Oh no, I know, a dirty words" means that people weren't secure and went out of there way to find mistakes in others
-"With the lights out, its less dangerous" means that people were superficial and judged by looks. You were more likely to be accepted if they didn't know what you looked like
-"I feel stupid, and contagious" means that people followed others stupidity. Contagious is a key word here.
-A mulatto is a child from a black parent and a white parent. Racial conflict between teenagers.
-An albino is someone with pale skin and red eyes. When you first think of that, you get a little disturbed. This signifys how teenagers can be disturbing, I guess
-A mosquito signifys the annoying attitude of teenagers and the mainstream
-Libido is sex drive, of course teenagers sex drive get in the way of their logical thinking.

Its pretty clear to me thats its about rejection of mainstream and teenage culture. The sad part is that this song started being popular just by the things that annoyed Kurt the most. Kurt didnt want to be mainstream, and with the song about NOT being mainstream and popular, he became popular with the crowd he was making fun of, pretty much. Pretty sad...

Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box Lyrics 16 years ago
When you watch the music video it becomes a lot more clear... Its a very political song...

-In the beginning your in a hospital room, so it shows the conflict of disease.
-Then they switch to an old man getting on to a cross like Jesus wearing a santa claus hat. This shows the conflict of religion (And the santa claus hat makes Kurt seem like an athiest who thinks religion is fiction).
-In the lryics they mention cancer and how he wants to get rid of it
-In the video there is a little girl who is wearing a KKK costume, a conflict with racism
-In the video the girls KKK costume flys away and turns black and then shes shown wearing the black one. This may signify the conflict between racism again, but on the opposite side, as in to show bitterness, if you know what I mean. Its hard to explain. (Im still confused on this part).
-You also see at one point little babies growing off trees and an obese angel trying to get to the babies and also the little KKK girl jumping to reach it. I thought this might be something about abortion... Since Kurt has made a song about abortion before...
-And the main lryics, "Hey, wait, I got a new complaint!" is showing how many conflicts happen in the world and how they just pop up all the time.
