It's about painting yourself white, shutting yourself away, slowly slipping into the belief that every part of your being is wrong in some way. If you want to interpret it as sexual also, then it could be the pressure to have casual sex, to like pornography, to buy into the idea that sex is best without love. I also think it's about slowly selling yourself out to conformity, almost losing yourself... Discouraged, filling up with white noise, feeling aimless and lost, nothing moves you too much (now that you feel it, it's gone) because you can't feel, you've become so numb and confused. There's something missing, you thought that trading all the "wrong" bits and pieces that made you an individual, for what you desperately desired, love and acceptance, have left you empty-handed and alone. You've gone off the rails. You don't know who you are, something vital is missing, and you are full of emptiness and superficiality, memory and desire that can't be fulfilled unless you somehow find your way back onto the rails. It's about losing the will to live (Hell as a state of mind) because you've given up on feeling or thinking for yourself, but you're still in there and it hurts. But a song like this, with such ambiguous lyrics (and beautiful music) could mean virtually anything. Only Thom knows what his intentions were when he wrote this incarnation of it, I wonder if he'd still explain it the same way as he did in 96? anyway... wow, didn't intend for this to get so long. I love Radiohead, this is useless information of course but they are my favourite band, of all time :) |

| I miss the Pumpkins too. This new incarnation just isn't the same - I mean, way back when, at the end of the Pisces Iscariot liner notes Billy stuck "2007". Sometimes I wonder if this whole rebirth of the Pumpkins was planned out from years back, what with all the 7s involved, and the fact that the breakup was kind of planned (though inevitable)... And besides - Billy and Jimmy + some other people was known as Zwan. Billy and Jimmy and James and Darcy = the Pumpkins. It is the epitome of arrogance for Billy to just assume that the Pumpkins will be anywhere near as powerful with half of its members gone and half-heartedly replaced by random people. So here's a toast to (hopefully) a real reunion, someday, with an album that actually has some soul to it. The band can't function without some tension in opposition to Billy's ego to balance the whole thing out (sorry Billy, I still love you against my better judgement, but you know it's true). | |
