Men at Work – Down Under Lyrics | 15 years ago |
To me this is about how the world sees/loves aussie culture. I don't know much about aussie music but theres one aussie thing I do know of: actors: Heath leger, yahoo serious (Mr. Accident, Young Einstein--split the beer atom lol), mel gibson (Mad Max), hugo weaving (in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, recently in Vfor vendetta), guy pierce (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Time machine, Count of MonteCristo), paul hogan, steve irwin, russel crowe, nicole kidman, olivia newton-john and susie porter (welcome to Woop Woop)... point is theres many talented and famous aussie actors yall should be proud. And btw i DO know some aussies so its not just from the media. |
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Great song with an obvious set me free kind of meaning... and its in the Rock and Roll hall of fame btw. |
Meredith Brooks – Bitch Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Pretty obvious what this song is about (so take me as I am). Btw according to biology class when its 'that time of the month' hormone levels are LOWER than normal. |
Helen Reddy – Angie Baby Lyrics | 15 years ago |
You know how in the movies whenever someone is psychic or does something else involving the supernatural (something which they can't proove) ordinary people wind up trying to lock them in the loony bin? Well basically I think that is whats happened with Angie (Folks hoping you'd turn out cool/ But they had to take you out of school/ You're a little touched you know) People assume she must be crazy because shes not even trying to make friends, the only friends she seems to want are the "imaginary" ones conjured; I don't think shes actually crazy for two reasons. The first is that theres a nuanced sarcasm to the lyrics that imply that she's aware of her situation, and people who are self aware are rarely crazy enough to get pulled out of school permanently. The second reason is this part of the song: "The headlines read, that a boy dissappeared, and everyone thinks he died, 'cept a crazy girl and her secret lover, who keeps her Satisfied" Okay so obviously its not all in her head if someone really went missing is it? To explain the weird thing about the radio shrinking and capturing the neighborboy, and it only letting him out when the music plays, i think you should look to fairy tales. In the movie Moulan Rouge theres a citar that has a spirit that always tells the truth when the citarplayer plays the instrument. I know a similar story where one of the bones of a murdered girl is used to make a string instrument and when the musician plays that instrument in front of her killer her spirit is finally able to come out and accuse her killer. So maybe the radio is magic and lovers really were whirring across the floor but only when the music was on. Personally I think the neighborboy was pretty brazen. I mean, if I was in his shoes I know I'd think twice before going into the house of a mysterious crazy girl. He must have nerved himself to do it after peeking through her window blinds he undoubtably convinced himself that she was harmlessly dancing with herself. I like the imagery of him getting smaller in stature when the volume goes down. (Honey I Shrunk the peeping Tom!) Anyway thats my interpretation of the song. I think the theme of this song is that the truth is hidden. |
Linkin Park – By Myself Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It seems to me that the singer has trouble judging people's character because he has trouble trusting people and cant really tell if someone is trustworthy. One line i like is: "Do I try to catch them redhanded?" I mean paranoia sucks but what if the fear of betrayal is justified? Then again not finding anything would probably make a paranoid person more distrustful... Basically its a cautionary tale: you need to will yourself to be more open and be willing to take risks or you'll be suspicious of everyone and "live in loneliness"... thats my take on it anyway. |
Tears for Fears – Mad World Lyrics | 15 years ago |
What is the instrument that they use for percussion? such an odd sound. What I like about this version is that it kind of juxtaposes this weird chipper frenetic melody with lyrics that are describing a world that is really apathetic; I mean yeah the Gary Jules version is more mellow but I think this version is way darker because you have to look to the lyrics to see beneath the cheerie superficial beat. So basically I think in this version the point of view is of an innocent someone who is beggining to see the world as fake; in the Gary Jules version its more like that is in the past and that person is now thoroughly depressed. |
My Chemical Romance – I'm Not Okay (I Promise) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Songs like this are catharsis... |
The Black Eyed Peas – Anxiety Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I've actually had an uzi pointed at me once when I was a child, (the guards were a little paranoid and pointed it at everyone) what this song means to me is that if im stressed and i put it on it calms me, I hope blackeyed Peas and Papa Roach collaborate again. |
Frank Zappa – I'm the Slime Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Great song! I'm surprized so few have commented on it. Basically it says TV is evil, don't believe anything you see on TV. I say go outside and find out for yourself if your perceptions (eyes, ears) match what your being told. And don't park your kids in front of the electronic babysitter and then complain that kids are too violent these days. Really any kind of media can lead to brainwashing, TV is just one of the most popular. Sorry if I ramble im a little ADD. |
Joni Mitchell – Big Yellow Taxi Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I was reading up on dying bee colonies and learned that its being caused by this aids like bee virus (CCD and mites) that shuts down their immune system making them vulnerable to things like DDT and die; in addition to finding that depressing it also made me think of this song. If there ever was like a bee awareness this should be their song lol. |
Rod Stewart – Tom Traubert's Blues Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I heard from an aussie once that "Waltzing Matilda" is their cops way of saying "lets take a little walk to the police station" this has become a little in-joke in my family. |
Rihanna – Disturbia Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I don't like how her voice is all over the place in this song, it makes her come off as nasal when she hits the high notes, i think she did a better job with Umbrella which I quite liked. I do really like the lyrics and applaud Chris Brown for coming up with a song about mental anguish it seems like Rihanna is falling apart at the seams in the song because shes so paranoid (possibly drug induced) that she sees herself as a monster. I find the sleep paralysis interpretation interesting though, that's really rare isn't it? Its scary to think you could slip into a nightmarish coma (sleep paralysis) or die in your sleep (like sleep apnea, which I have) |
Breaking Benjamin – Unknown Soldier Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I agree with the war interpretation, but um, a question inthepretendworld, how do u know if u have BPD? |
Pink – Family Portrait Lyrics | 15 years ago |
A moving, disturbing song. BTW Hurt is actually a nine inch nails song of which Johnny Cash did a cover, but I agree its almost as sad. |
Switchfoot – Meant To Live Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Its my interpretation that the song goes from the first person perspective of the singer where he's saying that he has lost his way and wants to live for something more, or in other words, that he wants to live by his rules of what he considers right, which being that he's a christian also includes "god's Path'. Then I interpret it as the singer expanding the song's meaning to universalize it and apply it to everyone, by which he is encouraging everyone to follow the right path for them, where or not it includes god (though Im sure hes hoping it does). Taking more of an agnostic point of view this song reminds me of a book titled "San Manuel, Bueno Martir" read the book and you'll see why. Taking more of a philosophical point of view I think this song might be sort of eudaimonistic with one thing leading to another: following your dreams (happiness) > being moral (virtuous) > following God (Good). (If you wanna talk more about eudaimonism or that San Manuel book email me) |
Don McLean – Everybody Loves Me, Baby Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is narcisism at its finest, very tongue in cheek! |
Flobots – Handlebars Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Y'all should listen to Don Mclean's Everybody loves ME, baby" It's also about hubris and megalomania. One thing that people haven't spent much time on in this song is how effectively volume, tempo, and intonation play a role in this song. For example, even though it's supposed to be one of the 'good' powerful person lines; "My reach is global My tower secure My cause is noble My power is pure" These lines are definitely louder making you wonder if its really a 'good' thing. I agree with most interpretations, though I think its not really about any one specific person, just about any one person specifically reaching and achieving power to do good or to do evil. I'm glad deep songs like this exist and not just the generic stuff about pimps and guns and break ups that you hear in songs. I guess theres a point to those songs too, you can usually dance to the beat and drown out the lyrics, but this is the stuff that you remember. |
Lostprophets – A Town Called Hypocrisy Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Um, Bogiez is the name of the club... found it on http://www.tv.com/lostprophets/person/242352/trivia.html |
Lostprophets – A Town Called Hypocrisy Lyrics | 15 years ago |
weird did u realize there's two copies of this song on songmeanings... Anyway, based on what I was just reading this song is about the small town in Wales that they came from Pontypridd is it? Back before they were famous they were the oddballs in town, kept to themselves, and weren't well liked like only one place in town would even give em gigs... so I can see why they think now that they've put their hometown on the map those people might be acting hypocritical. Also there's a lot of shepherding in Wales isn't there? The line about following sheep around is clever. |
Within Temptation – Our Solemn Hour Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I used to think there were two points of view on war: Hawks and Doves and This song seems to be a Dove's (Sharon) point of view on the hypocrisy of the Hawk's justified war and its propaganda. However I learned in class that theres actually three categories: Pacifists (Doves) who think that war can never be justified and believe that there is always a way without violence. Realists, who believe that war is inevitable and that to try to 'justify' it is hypocritical. Unfortunately the name of the third category escapes me but its the stance that most of our leaders take that there is a point when negotiations break down and war is unavoidable, at which point justifying war becomes necesary. One of the steps of that justification comes in the form of a formal declaration of war and that declaration is usually accompanied by propaganda. The defense of an invaded homeland or allied nation (france) is usually another justification for a formal declaration of war which I believe is what Winston Churchill states in the quote within the song. I think this is a pretty and insightful song and I agree that war is insanity, but personally I don't think in the world in which we live in with ignorance, intolerance, and bigotry that we can avoid war, now or in the near future. Is there a link between solemn hour and the eleventh hour or is that my imagination? Is the eleventh hour mentioned in the Bible? |
Andy Hunter – Amazing Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Not really relevant to this song but could you add the lyrics to Life light? I would but I don't know how. |
Disturbed – Prayer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
One more thing, to the person who called Disturbed Satanists... Disturbed is against organised religion. (Fact) Satanism is a form of organised religion. (Fact; it has all sorts of rules) Therefore, the statement "The band Disturbed are Satanists" is false. I know this site is about what a song means to you and you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but next time try saying something like: "In my opinion, the band Disturbed are satanists because... " Blanket statements like the one you made don't actually give your opinion because they are too broad, if you dont elaborate those statements the meaning of what you were trying to say gets lost. Unless ofcourse your only goal was to be an insulting bigoted intolerant ass. |
Disturbed – Darkness Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The theme of the CD seems to be about him struggling with his faith in god, but it could also be about loosing someone... my interpretation is pretty close to Need; just substitute the word "girlfriend" with "God" either way this song is beautiful... I find myself putting it on repeat... |
Disturbed – Prayer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Ok people keep asking the same questions over and over so I will summerise a brief list: 1. David is Jewish. Raised Jewish. 2. David rejected organised religion, not God altoguether; he is now "spiritual" 3. The rest of the band members are also "spiritual" 4. This song seems to have been modeled on the story of Job from the first testament; certainly the music video seems to support this. 5. THe song appears to have been a reaction to comments made after 9/11 as well as the death of his grandfather. 6. This song according to David is a conversation between him and god. 7. One key difference between the story of JOb and this song is the ending, Job stays faithful to god and David seems (one interpretation)to desert him, however in real life David does not desert god, he is merely spiritual... did i miss anything? On a separate note my view on belief is that it is less important to believe than it is to do good, and although it is hard to quantify or qualify good is intrinsic (it exists on at least a basic level) I am an agnostic, some days I believe some I dont, but I dont stress about it. I know that belief in God is a leap of faith, but I have faith in good at least... All in all this is a rocking song and really quite deep. |
Disturbed – Meaning of Life Lyrics | 15 years ago |
You know whats funny? I have a japanese friend named saiko, first time I heard this song a picture of her popped in my head... |
Disturbed – Meaning of Life Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Does anyone else think this might be about murder groupies?an interpretation no one else has mentioned yet, I mean some killers reach celebrity status and have women writing love letters to them in Jail (sick, I know)... personally i can also see it as being both interpretations mentioned (killer rage and hot hot backstage sex) and any way you slice it I think there is a bit of a 'basic drive' freudian twist to it. |
Three Days Grace – Just Like You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Also while in my case, its a cousin and not a parent, the line "'Cause I can't take living with you" does relate, I found out a couple years back that I'm part of the reason she left, which probably makes it the nicest thing I did for the littler of my two cousins that year... I know thats an ugly thing to say but I firmly believe it was for the better... |
Three Days Grace – Just Like You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Recently my cousin got a phone call from her sister who she had'nt heard of in two decades. My cousin basically said I dont want to talk to you and hung up. My mom couldnt understand her reaction, but based on my own experiences with her sister I think this song might sum up how she feels... she (my cousin's sister) was completely ruthless and tried to make my cousin just like her. |
Orgy – Blue Monday Lyrics | 15 years ago |
My interpretation of the meaning is pretty simple, its about people assuming that they know your feelings... its pretty clear that the singer doesnt know his feelings, but it doesnt mean that others are gonna be best at or more accurate in interpreting them. His feelings are probably not what they 'should' be, which actually makes it more likely that they will be open to misinterptetation by others. Theres also an element of wishful thinking on his part, wishing that his feelings were what they should be, probably so he could label them or so he can fit in. Ok maybe not such a simple interpretation, but it makes me mad when people make assumptions like that... |
Eminem – Hailie's Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Ok eminem sounds NOTHING like a boyband nor did he go 'soft'. If eminem had gone soft on this song, he wouldnt be making those comments about his ex would he? And while I'm not exactly his biggest fan, I think this is his Best song. With Eminem's songs I usually wanna find that imaginary FCC censorship button (although that's true of 90% of rappers), but this time I dont. I do sometimes think Eminem can be funny or deep and in this song he's both, so for what its worth, congratulations Eminem on making a song that's quite moving. |
Poe – Hello Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I always interpreted this song as being about the omniprescence of MODerators being all big brotherish, theres even a bit in the song where she seems to be complaining about how long it can take to talk to a moderator (on some sites) if you need to talk to one (like with a glitch or something); but I can see it being about hackers, the thing about leaving a trace on a data back road is something hackers try to avoid, no? (unless they want to get back in later) and isnt that chain linked thing about hidden messages that you click on part of an image or something and it routes you to another site or something? It could be something less literal and be referring to a "disconnected" (depressed?) boyfriend... |
Within Temptation – What Have You Done Lyrics | 16 years ago |
For me, what makes this song work is the guitars, yay Martjn! |
Within Temptation – Forsaken Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I used to think that "the day after tommorrow" (which this song is apparently based on) was a huge exaggeration, but some things i saw on the national geographic channel have convinced me that its timetable at least is only a mild exaggeration. If we don't somehow improve things, that 'turning point' could happen in our lifetime. Oh and by the way, 2/3 of the world's population lives within 60 miles of the coast... netherlands in not the only place that's close to sealevel. |
My Chemical Romance – I'm Not Okay (I Promise) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I like the song, but I think this song was meant as a joke (sarcasm, irony). I've only heard a couple of songs by the band I'm not gonna voice an opinion on them yet. As far as emo goes some songs are ok, some are crap, but I think calling this song emo is really a stretch... If you are mad at your band for becoming successful you're an idiot, because there's a difference between making more money and changing one's outfits and lyrics to go mainstream. |
Linkin Park – Breaking The Habit Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I know that there is twelve pages of post so I'll try to keep this short. I believe that this song was intended to have a positive ending, regardless of what's on the music video or even what the band has said because its pretty clear that one of the things that the singer is trying not to do is hurt others again, and the best way to hurt others is by commiting suicide. Mind you the second best way is to continue doing whatever harmful habit it is that you're doing. So I think the singer found another way out. Because until I came on this site I had assumed that the song had a positive ending, I do consider it to be uplifting... it's 'happy' songs that tend to make me More depressed. I think that despite the fact that teenagers are supposedly awash in 'violent media which promotes the issues of suicide' that people still ignore it when it becomes an issue in their own homes. Point in fact, I came home from college for Christmas break, went to the doctor with my mom in the same room, had her script me some antidepressants and we havent talked about it once. So I can totally relate to the "you all assume" line. |
Within Temptation – Angels Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"No mercy no more No remorse cause I still remember The smile when you tore me apart" This song has me thinking about when I was a little girl some relatives came to stay with us, my "new" sisters. I was told to accept them with open arms. "You took my heart Deceived me right from the start You showed me dreams I wished they would turn into real You broke the promise and made me realize It was all just a lie" The older of the two quickly proved to have two faces, one that she used to be as charming as possible and drop the kind of hints that undermine a person. The other face she would show to me, telling me and her sister repeatedly that we were'nt family; it was us versus them, and that she would get everything of mine. "Fallen angel, tell me why? What is the reason, the thorn in your eye?" I tried being nice to her and she told clever lies... "You could have chosen a different path The smile when you tore me apart" |
