River City Extension – There and Back Again Lyrics | 12 years ago |
well i get the weight of lies and i do not feel safe |
Josh Ritter – Change of Time Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Your shoulder blade, your spine Were shorelines in the moon light New worlds for the weary New lands for the living This isn't only great alliteration but it reminds me a lot of the idea of bad actress, where her body comprises the entirety of the world (oceans and continents), but whereas the metaphorical voyage in bad actress is doomed to fail, this one seems genuine. These songs really seem incredibly similar, especially in the idea of a confused, drifting dream. Though her eyes are big as Canada And the hips are South Australia And the shoulder blade is Africa Looking out on South America Im out here on the sea And her heart aint where it oughta be... Now my apartment lies awake at night It tosses every time she sighs I hesitate to assume that the narrator in both songs is the same, or that either of these can be ascribed to Ritter's own life/thoughts, but the successful love (destination?) in change of time might reflect the fact that he's now in love and married, not still searching. |
Cataldo – Pull Hard, Drink Deep Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's "baby get our fill go on and pull hard and drink deep" not "philco on" |
Steel Train – Better Love Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I watch the camera shoot this girl Seems to me a hollow pearl I can only assume he's referring to Scarlett's role in Girl with a Pearl Earring. |
Bright Eyes – Waste of Paint Lyrics | 14 years ago |
As to the discussion about God in this song- it seems as if Conor absolutely believes in God but just can't reconcile that belief with his own life. He says "my absent god" implying both possession and neglect. Also the line "But when I lift my voice up now to reach them the range is too high way up in heaven" seems to say that he can't attain salvation or have faith- but he does believe that it's possible. The language is similar to what he says about the fairy tale of true love- the tragedy of this world is that both (God and Love) are promised to all but only attained by some. Merely one example of Conor's unique ability to be absolutely profound and depressing and yet still somehow leave the listener with a twinge of hope. You feel as if the sentiment is yours but that you could never match the passion and pain in his voice. |
Josh Ritter – Folk Bloodbath Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the line "i'm looking over rooftops and i'm hoping that it ain't true" is from peter killed the dragon. |
Okkervil River – For Real Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think that says more about you than the song |
Dave Matthews Band – Why I Am Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I love the elements of his past that he's putting into the song. The references to proudest monkey and two step in the first stanza combined with the tribute to Leroi later in the song really give it a cool nostalgic feel. |
Jessica Lea Mayfield – Bible Days Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it's actually "tested by god or anybody else" |
Bound Stems – Happens to Us All Otherwise Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i'm pretty sure the last line before the chorus at the end is turn while we run in an effort to keep in one place instead of Turn while we run but act like you keep it One place |
Ben Sollee – How To See the Sun Rise Lyrics | 15 years ago |
He is (rhetorically) asking a girl how he is supposed to deny his unrequited love. He does this through the metaphors of a genesis-esque restraint of forbidden fruit, a journey of infinite distance, letting a bird grow without letting it leave him, and seeing the sunrise during the night. Each metaphor seems more and more impossible, as is his ability to deny his love for this girl. this is a simple yet brilliant song. |
Josh Ritter – Thin Blue Flame Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i love the double meaning in the line "the lake was a diamond in the valley's hand" i mean beyond the imagery of a diamond cupped in someone's palm, the continuation of the poker metaphor through the image is just too much. its the little things like that which make this song so amazing each time i come back to it. has anyone else seen the live acoustic duet with hillary hahn on violin? it's worth a listen |
Josh Ritter – Bone Of Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
he said in a British interview back in 2005 that the song came from a dream about a type of musical Rosetta Stone- I guess he was thinking about a kind of stone where music stems from- that explains the weird trippy disconnect and all the random references. |
