The Kindred – Everbound Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about the feeling one gets from being physically separated from a loved one. The verses set up the choruses by showing us the feelings we have when being physically with a loved one. For example:

"Hear me out, intimacy;
Let your warmth envelop me."
"Please, comfort, remain a while;"

The chorus is the person struggling with being away from said loved one. Their need for intimacy can spur unfaithful emotions, but the other person's word is enough to strengthen their resolve. The perspective of this dedication can be from the view of either of the lovers, as they dedicate themselves to one another.

During the bridge, the person realizes that though they are not physically close, their resolve and conviction that may make them even closer than they would ever be. The first couple choruses end with the line, "Know all despair will be resolved at companion's side." However, after the bridge, the final chorus states, "All despair will be dissolved." No longer do they need proximity to get rid of their waning belief.

The Kindred – Heritage Lyrics 10 years ago
This song starts out with a quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The exact quote is as follows:

"He who cannot draw on three thousand years is living from hand to mouth"

Living hand-to-mouth is a phrase describing someone who merely lives to sustain their life. A person not drawing in experiences, thoughts, and feelings from millenniums are such people, living a selfish life dedicated to just living.

Feelings, thoughts, ideas, and inventions progress and evolve through time; we springboard off of the knowledge of those in the past to propel us in the present and future. We stand on the elevated ground of those before us, just as they did for those before them. As we use the knowledge of the past, we can reach higher towards various forms of enlightenment (spiritual, emotional, economic, intellectual, etc.).

The title, Heritage, has two meanings in the context of this song: the legacy of the past that we inherit through time moves us forward, and as time goes forward, we will be the heritage that drives the future.

The Kindred – Wolvish Lyrics 10 years ago
Wolfish is about a person battling their desire that would cut themselves from a environment, society, or community that they already deem unjust.

"I tire of sheepish; admire the wolf.
I don't care if it's lonely,
I must become so wholly wolvish; naturally free.
Wolvish; eerily calm in lunacy."

The person is tired of following what is expected of him. Rather than be a sheep, he would rather be like a wolf; vicious and desire-driven. This would allow him to be free, but the people (being sheepish) will try to push him away for appearing to be crazy. However, this person does not seem to care, and would in fact find it more peaceful.

"The feelings I get when I witness injustice
Feel the same as when viewing a mountain range.
And when questioning how man forms mal-intent
I wonder 'Might refuge exist for estranged?'"

This verse simply express how the person views society. When they see some they might deem unjust or hurtful, the person may seek a wild, but cut-off refuge from those who practice mal-intent. The mountain range is a symbol of this place - beautiful and wild; the perfect place for a wolf.

"I must go off alone in wild
Where I just might escape my restraints."

Once again, the person is overcome with desire to run away into the unknown and escape the restraints of society.

"But what of the other?
Could I endure the cold thought of
Never seeing her 'gain?
Though there is madness here,
She is least one shining brilliance
To challenge the splendour of that glorious mountain range.
A care so tender it gets me rethinking
My hopeless appraisals of our society.
Oh, could I endure a life lived without her, in the wild?"

The person reflects on someone they care about, and starts to debate whether or not he should commit to his ambitions to become wolvish. This woman is dear to them, and is the person who grounds them to the society that they feel estranged from.

"Would it be selfish,
Or best for us all,
If I become so
Wholly the wolvish one?"

The person is debating if it is truly bad to run away from their society. His own desires may be dragged down by society, but maybe the society is dragged down by his desires as well. Lying to himself may also be hurting others. The question it is asking us is as follows: Is it sometimes better for us to be detested for who we are? Or should we conform to an image in a negative fashion?

Closure In Moscow – ピンク レモネード Lyrics 10 years ago
The title of the song (ピンㇰ レモネード) translates to "Pinku Remonēdo," or "Pink Lemonade." The romanization of the Japanese characters, or romaji, is as follows:

"Boku no utsukushī tomodachi
Jinsei no tabi wa owatte inai
Sore wa hashi matta bakari
Sore wa kimi no kokoro no naka de okiru
Moshi kimi ni yūki ga aru nonaraba
Kimi wa mahō no (pinku remonēdo) nomimono wa iranai
Kimi ni hitsuyōna no wa hoppe ni
Kaze no karui kisu o kanjiru koto

Moshi kimi ni yūki ga aru nonaraba
Kimi wa mahō no (pinku remonēdo) nomimono wa iranai
Kimi ni hitsuyōna no wa hoppe ni
Soshite gimon wa sora ni ukande iru kimi no utsukushī shirodada
Jinsei no tabi wa owatte inai"

Here is a VERY rough translation of the lyrics, line by line:

"My beautiful friend,
The journey of life is not over.
Just waiting for the end
That happens in your heart.

If there is courage in you,
You do not need magic (pink lemonade) drinks.
All you need to the cheek
Is to feel the kiss of light wind.

If there is courage in you,
You do not need magic (pink lemonade) drinks.
All you need to the cheek-
Your question is a beautiful castle floating in the sky.
The journey of list is not over."

As far as the meaning goes, this song is saying that if you need to be strong and accept the simple things in life (like the feeling of the wind on your cheek). No matter how many questions you have or how tough life gets, it is not over, and you need to have the courage to make it better yourself without things like the toxic Pink Lemonade (or "quick fix schemes," as mentioned into Happy Days). This song ties very well into Happy Days in this regard.

Between the Buried and Me – Swim to the Moon Lyrics 12 years ago
The literal interpretation this song is a man in his boat stranded in the middle of the sea, but the metaphorical meaning is the most interesting part if you understand the context of the entire album.

Mirrors starts off by saying everything is fleeting, new, and fragmented. In a sense, the world seems chaotic, and that the person is not learning and growing from it. It also brings on the first recurring theme: "Close one eye. Step to the side." The person that is being depicted is overwhelmed with the world and knows he won't understand all of its workings, so he takes in half of it and lets the rest pass him by.

Obfuscation is more focused on control. The word "obfuscation" means to make obscure or incomprehensible to hide a meaning. The recurring theme of that song is that people will never be satisfied about knowing everything, but we still feel like we need to know all even though we can't. This is applicable to the government, with laws that intrude and invade privacy, but can be used in many other situations. Since this is human nature, governments are naturally going to want to know everything, but it becomes very much a need for the power of knowledge. Near the end of the song, the "governing body" (if we use that analogy) is reiterates the lines "Close one eye. Step to the side." HOWEVER, this has a completely different meaning. The willingness to know less (as in Mirrors) has become the demand to learn more; you are being told to ignore all the OBFUSCATED laws and practices and move aside. THESE are the fleeting and new fragments discussed in Mirrors: the obfuscated practices of the being taking control.

Disease, Injury, and Madness is easiest to compare to Orwell's 1984. The song about trying to gain control of people to rid them of their "flaws." This world parallels that of Orwell's dystopian vision. The big difference is that the being taking control ultimately admits he failed and blames humanity instead of himself for the flaws, resulting in dehumanization of the species, and the urge to exert more control or give up.

Fossil Genera is centralized around the idea of satellites, the final attempt to enclose and monitor society. The satellites supposedly can determine that there is an outer threat and that the "new" government needs to be trusted. Whether the new government took form via revolution or re-election is left to interpretation. The ending describes how the "new" government took control. ONCE AGAIN, we see the need to both obfuscate and (ironically) know everything. This is how the new being plans to move on. And with the satellites ("more sky"), they exert control.

Desert of Song, reminiscent of Rush's 2112, describes the fall of music. Music is expression, and thus, expression is void in the world. Short and simple.

Thus, we get to Swim to the Moon. To give this already lengthy comment some brevity, swimming to the moon is a metaphor for leaving the view of the satellites and finding a place of peace where your every action is scrutinized. Once again, the swimmer is still in the ocean, but his goal is on a different level. Though it seems impossible, death to him is a fair enough cost for a brief moment of peace from this chaotic and obfuscated world.

Ultimately, I think we all should take a moment every now and then to try and swim to the moon...

The Animals – House Of The Rising Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
The problem is in the phrase:

"Oh mother, tell your children,
Not to do what I have done.
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the house of the Rising Sun."

Most people say it's the speaker's warning to his mother about the Rising Sun. But there's an obvious contradiction between "Not to do what I have done..." and "...Spend your lives in sin and misery." This leaves to a few explanations:

One is that the "thing he's done" was not at the Rising Sun. This is highly unlikely because why would someone who cares about his/her mother's well-being wouldn't tell her to stay at the Rising Sun.

Another explanation (which I support) is that the mother is in fact at the Rising Sun. Whether it be the speaker's mother or the speaker's love interest at the Rising Sun is unclear. This does add an interesting contrast between that phrase and the next one (which supports the Rising Sun), since adds contrast to a possible double life.

One final explanation could be a point-of-view shift. This could happen at the phrase previously mentioned (shifting to the father, then back at to the speaker at the end, w/o the speaker even going to the Rising Sun, and with the father saying that he in fact wants his children to be at the Rising Sun instead of building "like [he has] done"). This could happen in other places as well, but it's not as likely.

Toby Keith – Beer for My Horses Lyrics 15 years ago
This song isn't about how the judicial system needs to be changed, nor does it tell the listener that they should kill everyone who does wrong-doing. This song is merely a story. In the first few lines, it obviously should that someone is frustrated with people getting off easy. But then the person's father tells the son (or the son remembers being told) that back in the day, everyone used to just round-up all the bad guys on the street and hang 'em high. It's kinda like the story we always hear that goes, "Back in the day, I had to walk 10 miles uphill in 8 inch snw everyday to get to school." That's all it really says, and it's up to the listener's own ideals to decided whether it's right or wrong...

Muse – Butterflies and Hurricanes Lyrics 16 years ago
lol...good point blackmofasa. Actually makes sense, too. But anyways...I view the lyrics as saying you have to fight when the time comes, prove yourself whenever you have to, and every action has to be amazing and perfect as if it was, 'cause it's going to be eventually.
Also, (something not relating to the lyrics) the structure seems to represent a hurricane itself. You have the imminent arrival of it at the beginning. Then you're in the thick of the hurricane, followed by the absolutely gorgeous eye of it, where calm and serenity balances with impending doom. Then you come out of the eye at the end.

Moby – Raining Again Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with mralchemist to a certain extent...but the main thing I believe in differently is that the guy in the song KNOWS the relation is going down the crapper so to speak:

"Never know but nothing less
Couldn't see that I had guessed
Couldn't see, couldn't stay away"

the 1st verse to me means that the girl has problems with the relationship (doesn't know what she wants, but wants nothing less than a perfect relationship), and the guy is guessing what's wrong and giving her all the signs, but she doesn't see them

Therefore, with this interpretation, it is essential to the meaning that she is dragging the guy into the rain (aka sadness of the relationship), and even though they both want to get through by "lighting up the car lights", they're still stuck in the rain. It is also evident that he wants the relationship to work when he says:

"Didn't even stopped to see that
That it was breaking me and
the world is coming out so cold"

He keeps on truckin', but since he's being dragged into the rain, and it's effecting him.

The title also implies that this has happened either in this relationship or another since it is raining AGAIN

I love it how in the actual lyrics, he says "Had to play some music otherwise he’d crack", and in the solo, he "wants to play now", or at least that's what it sounds like.

Over the Rhine – The Trumpet Child Lyrics 16 years ago
How could there be so few comments about this song? It's so meaningful! That and I'm a trumpet player, so, even though it isn't even really about trumpet players, I still feel like a bad @$$ when I hear this song. It's so intense and passionate, too. The last stanza always hits me hard; the way the song states it is exactly the same way I feel about trumpet playing, but more importantly, music-playing.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 16 years ago
I have no clue what this song is about, but it definitely has too much in common with the Greek Myth of King Midas to be a coincidence in my opinion. For starters, "everything still turns to gold" is like the classic Midas touch. Midas also was a follower of Pan, the god of plains and such, and the song obviously refers to nature a lot. Pan also was sometimes known as "the piper", for he played on his loot or whatever a lot. Midas also was a witness to a musical competition between Pan (who played a flute-like instrument) and Apollo, god of music (who played a guitar-like instrument). Pan played first, followed by Apollo (kind of like in the song). The god of the mountains (basically the ref) instantly declared Apollo the winner, and all but Midas agreed. He was punished for this transgression against the gods by having his clearly broken ears with those of a donkey. These ears were later concealed by a bribed head-dresser, who, out of eagerness to tell the secret, whispered the secret into the ground and buried it. Plants grew where the secret was buried, and the whisper was carried on the wind ("Your stairway lies on the whispering wind").

That being said, the song still really doesn't make any since with that information lol(unless I skipped something in the myth), but it still doesn't mean that the song doesn't follow a theme. And it's a great song still.

Funkadelic – Maggot Brain Lyrics 16 years ago
Here's a question: if "Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time" refers to to the Vietnam War (which, don't get me wrong, I think is what is meant), why is she pregnant? Isn't pregnancy tied to giving life instead of taking it away?
