wow thats the best interpretation I've read. After reading it I can't help thinking that 'these comforting sounds' could be his lover faking her orgasms?

Filter – Take A Picture Lyrics 13 years ago
haha, funny how this is partly aimed at a father for not approving of his son's career choice - a father with TWO pretty successful sons in showbiz - Richard's brother Robert played the T1000 in Terminator 2, Jonnhy Cash's dad in Walk the Line and a bumch more; Richard was only like the lead guitarist for a band called Nine Inch Nails, oh, and I think he had a band called Filter... what do you think about your sons now dad??

Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics 14 years ago
It doesn't get more blatant than 'those drugs you got won't make you feel better' , the 'somebody' is no doubt his addiction.
'Haven't laughed this hard in a long time...' - its heartbreaking to see how he wanted so badly for this person to be a reason to stop using, to stay alive etc.
As beautiful as the song is, the resignation in his voice and the things he says is the sound of the final nail being hammered into his coffin
Line for line, this has to be one of the saddest songs of all time.

Elliott Smith – Say Yes Lyrics 14 years ago
Ok so maybe this song isn't about drugs/ addiction but I really wish it was because I had such a cool interpretation which I’m gonna share anyway.

So, remember Nancy Reagan's 'Just Say No' campaign, I think he could've been taking the piss by calling this song 'Say Yes'. Now I don't see Elliott as the type of person to endorse drug use openly, which explains exactly why this song is disguised as a cute love song(as most of the best songs about drugs are eg.Good vibrations, Gotta get you into my life etc.), Anyway the way I see it is he wrote this song after a month long of being clean ('we broke up a month ago') but is now tempted to use again, and naturally he's conflicted about it. I think it is here where in attempt to lighten things up a little he shares a private joke with the devil on his shoulder who's shouting 'say yes!'

The whole 'morning after' thing has different meanings throughout the song:
1) The 'girl' who's still around: I suspect he's referring to the fact that his addiction doesn't wane away after a night of using, and on the flip side of the same coin he is slave to this drug which he personifies as 'a girl' and she'll still be there the next day wanting more of him. So its a sorta dark twisted mutual love affair he's describing here. He’s also rationalising (‘crooked spin’) to himself about how this is the perfect girl because he knows she definitely won’t leave him the next day.
2) 'We broke up a month ago and I grew up, I didn't know I'd be around the morning after': As I explained earlier he probably had kicked the habit at this stage and he's talking about how he's surprised that he's still alive
3)'A happy day and then you pay And feel like shit the morning after
But now I feel changed around and instead falling down I'm standing up the morning after': Pretty obvious if you're following my track here, he's talking about how one morning after using he literally felt like shit or more likely after a period of wreckless debauchery he had a near death experience which was a wake up call for him to quit. Now, since kicking it he's been feeling much better (duh)
4) 'I could be another fool or an exception to the rule You tell me the morning after', Assuming he was 27 when he wrote this , which is pretty likely if you do the math, Could Elliott have been referring to those rock stars who died at 27 commonly referred to as the 'Stupid Club'? ('another fool'- get it?)

I'm not gonna sit here and dissect every line but I still think there's a possibility that Mr Smith was lying (with only the best intentions, see second par.) when he said this song was really about a girl he broke up with.

Blk Jks – Lakeside Lyrics 14 years ago
as far as i know this songs about driving past a fatal car wreck that happened by (duh) a lakeside.
i guess the irony is that the whole 'life flashed before your eyes' thing only happens when you escape a near death experience, but its written from the passer-by's point of view so its more about how the site of other corpses reminds him of his own mortalitty. Another cool thing is the double meaning of 'Where did it all go wrong?', which could refer to what could've caused this car wreck and also where did it all go wrong in his life.

The Shins – Turn a Square Lyrics 15 years ago
'Where your feet leave not prints on the ground' - she doesn't walk she hovers like an angel, This song has to be about infatuation. My interpretation is that this girl likes him back but he is too much of self defeatist ('classically trained to give up') to believe that she'd actually choose someone like him when so many other men ('well made locks') are falling at her feet. Then again the cheating thing is plausible too but I like mine.

Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life Lyrics 15 years ago
Does no one else see the connection between this song and Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind ?? I don't know, maybe its the part about spreading blankets on the beach, or the part about feeling as if she just woke up or the part about not knowing where he's been or... Okay I doubt it really is but the part about working for his paycheck then waiting to win the lottery, thats pretty much what Jim Carrey's character meant when he said 'OK!'

Doves – There Goes The Fear Lyrics 15 years ago
Have you seen the video? Fck, you get the feeling this guy was doing okay, he was coping, until this very moment when he’s suddenly overcome with fear brought on a by a panic attack. Then he’s bombarded with these chilling flashbacks of a younger hipper version of himself and what we assume was his former pretty girlfriend. It’s so freakin’ scary but omg so painstakingly beautiful at the same time. Perhaps every mid life crisis is triggered off this way.
I think the lyrics warn us not to let this happen. The song is very much a mournful cry about growing old and life passing by in a flash, but at the same time it’s also about embracing change and letting go of a youth that is no longer yours. Yes, treasure these memories with all your heart but don’t hold on to them too tightly or they will consume you. Accept the inevitable and grow old graciously.

Peter Bjorn and John – Young Folks Lyrics 16 years ago
I like Antifia's interpretation. there is this kinda mournful realisation that they're too old now to be considerred part of the young folks but at the same time still too young and hip to be considerred old . Maybe I'm going too far by saying that 'hours seems to dissapear' is a metaphor for a fear of growing old
ALso thoiught of the JD Salinger connection , but in the short story the characters seem to be very superficial ( including the girl if I'm remembering correctly), the very thing the 2 here are scoffing at

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey Lyrics 16 years ago
Not to sound like one of those elitist, but if you knew anything about JAMC, you'd know that they not the types who would write straight forward love songs The very genius is that they ostensibly appear that way because of the allusions to honey, plastic toys, candy etc. This same approach applies to their sound accept in a visa versa kind of way. On the surface their songs are very abrasive, but low in the mix buried under a barrage of harsh distortion you’ll find Jim Reed’s sweet catchy melodies reminiscent of Buddy Holley or 60’s girl bands like The Ronettes

“WTF I’m sure this song’s about going down someone!”

Elliott Smith – First Timer Lyrics 16 years ago
For me this song is about finding yourself in the same waiting room or at a bus stop, in this case probably a corridor with a beautiful girl who’s there on her own An opportunity which most alpha males would lap up without any hesitation. However the narrator is not one of them. Even though this desired girl’s body language suggests a willingness to be spoken to and a possibility that she might like him back, he knows that his shyness will always prevail and he won’t say or do a damn thing. He has a love/hate relationship with his condition of being overly shy. He hates the fact that it will cause him to let such an opportunity pass him by, So much so that he wishes he’d been ‘someone else’ perhaps even the very type of person he despises, the alpha male. He’s even seeked help by seeing a ’doctor’ but wouldn’t do what he prescribed because, on the other hand, he finds his condition comforting and therefore difficult to let go of. There’s always a payoff. Perhaps if he wasn’t so shy he wouldn’t have the inspiration to write such a beautiful song, Its also what makes him unique from the ‘someone else’ he wishes he could’ve been ……. then again it could be about drugs;)
