Miike Snow – Bavarian #1 (Say You Will) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
A Bavarian seems to be trying to sleep with a girl he once slept with before. People seem to have good reasons for keeping them apart, but "they wont save" them. The girl that the singer is interested in seems to be listening to them. He tells her that she doesn't need them, with the condition that she says that she "will" give him another chance. |
Miike Snow – God Help This Divorce Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"The sun sets for so long on these streets So many beautiful faces that don’t need me" -First of all, it's kinda obvious this guy is getting a divorce. He realizes that he isn't needed in the relationship, whether it's his fault or her fault is not clear yet, but the decision that he is not needed is clear. I'm going to guess, however, that he was the one that decided the divorce. "Papers and little useless things Slide down along the pavement away from me" -He doesn't have to worry about paying bills that deal with his wife, so that's why they slide down the pavement AWAY from him. "Taking my tea in silence Telling strange jokes to myself God help this divorce, God help this divorce" -He's at peace, but also somewhat lonely because he's telling jokes to himself. "She was a beauty queen But, I held her down, down, down I held her down, down, down I held her, I held her Me without a family Yeah, I held her down, down, down I held her down, down, down I held her, I held her" -Here it is very clear that it was her fault they got a divorce. He tried his best to be there for her, no matter the occassion. "Go to the bar and say semi-sexist things" -He starts drinking because he's angry, and curses at his ex-wife by using sexist phrases. Everything else is the same as before. So he got a divorce, she had a lot of good things going for her, he didn't, but he had to let go of her. |
Miike Snow – Devil's Work Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think the song is literally about sex. The devil's work is sex itself. He's makes the argument that you don't have to do much to have sex. He easily finds this girl who he has been with before (My hands, I feel like I've been here before) |
Miike Snow – Enter The Jokers Lair Lyrics | 12 years ago |
In the first stanza, I believe Miike Snow is trying to say that we seem to have a general consensus that we have to find our soul-mates here, and that it's okay to discriminate by finding someone who can truly change your life. I don't really understand the last stanza. Maybe he did ecstasy and didn't know how he came down but knows that he was harmed. (this is a stretch) |
Miike Snow – Black Tin Box Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The two characters in this, a man and a girl, are both singing to a woman, or a parent. That parent seems to have somehow lost her child in a way that she may have been guilty of, so it's not too easy for people to comfort her. She may have lost custody of them in some way. There's also the possibility that the person they are talking about couldn't have kids. As you can see, the black tin box makes the male speaker uncomfortable because only people who don't have children have them. Same goes for the woman who notices the youth playing outside while she is writing the postcard. |
Miike Snow – The Wave Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It could also allude to the world ending and its inevitableness. The group says "I know you hear it coming... Don't let it get you down," trying to argue that although the world is ending, it's going to be alright. The wave could be a giant flood caused by a nuclear bomb, or just a wave of atomic destruction. The tin that they're banging on is probably like an underground nuclear base to protect them from any disasters. Not even "his love" is saved from the wave. |
Modest Mouse – Bukowski Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It's very straightforward. He's talking to religious people and how they get so much into their religion they are unable to listen to other point of views. He also attacks God on how it's a hypocrite. In some traditions, if you are not of Christian faith, you cannot attend the wedding of a Christian couple getting married. The narrator asserts that even though he's not invited to the wedding, he'll be at the wake, when they're dead and nothing matters. On Bukowski: This is why the song is named so: "For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can’t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don’t remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command or faith a dictum. I am my own God. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us." - Charles Bukowski He said that and that's why the song is named so. Note that Modest Mouse isn't calling Bukowski an asshole, he's calling God one because of it being a control freak. When he says "I am my own God," I think this bothered Isaac, and he wrote about it. |
Death Cab for Cutie – Some Boys Lyrics | 13 years ago |
^ I don't think that's quite it. You may be on the right track, but using the wrong evidence. I actually thought that this was about two different spectrums of boys (the good and the bad/those who get what they want, and those who don't), but I think it's actually four. The first set of boys is on the first verse: "Some boys are filling Some boys are filling the hole They're making a killing at the top of the billing It's their role and that's all that they know" These are the winners. They're filling the holes, or the emptiness in their lives with someone else. Making a killing at the top of the billing refers to being the lead in a play (the billing are those playbooks you get when you see a play that tells you about the show and it's actors). So he's a winner all around, and that's all he knows as a winner. These guys get love. Second verse is another set of boys: "But some boys don't listen Some boys don't listen at all They don't ask for permission They lack inhibitions No walls and they get what they want" These boys are exactly what they sound like. Reckless, confident, the outlaws, and they get what they want because they are so determined and ambitious to do so. Of course these boys are winners too, but we're getting close to the bad side. These guys get love Third set of boys: "Some boys are singing Some boys are singing the blues Joylessly flinging With the girls that they're bringing To their rooms Then leave when they're through" These guys are sad, but they're sort of evil too. They sleep with women constantly, and one-night stands with that. The women come and go, and since they're "joylessly flinging" it's more about having "sex" than making passion and love. These guys have no love. The last set of boys: "Some boys are sleeping some boys are sleeping alone Because there's no one that's keeping Them warm through the evening And they know That they're on their own" These guys are the absolute loners. Who knows if they are bad, or if they're good. Maybe their love is just in their fantasies, but they're on their own forever. Actually, the "Some boys" that don't know how to love can be the fifth can final set of boys. If you compare the four other boys to the some boys don't know how to love, well who is really the judge of how to love? The fifth set of boys are those who can't show love. The first boys show love through being winners, and being the best at what they do. The second boys get the love whether the one being loved likes it or not. The third boys thinks love is never for one person, and that it shouldn't be focused on just one either. The fourth knows that they'll forever be alone because the way they can show love may not be what others are attracted to, but they at least try to show love in their fantasies. Those boys who don't know how to love, well they're just heartless. |
Death Cab for Cutie – St. Peter's Cathedral Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Probably the best song off the album. I wasn't too content with this album's rhythm as a whole, but this is definitely a noteworthy song. Although the message may seem obvious, I think it's important to cut it up and look into it: "St Peter's cathedral Built of granite Ever fearful of the answer" -People go to church in hopes of finding faith and trying to stay positive about what lies ahead after someone dies, but they still remain "ever fearful of the answer." There's no certainty that there is a God, or an afterlife, and people are afraid of this. "When the candle in the tunnel Is flickering and sputters And fading faster It's only then that you will know What lies above or down below" -Plain and simple. No one knows what happens to us in the afterlife until we're there, face to face with it. "Or if these fictions only prove How much you've really got to lose" -A very risky and controversial remark, the speaker is claiming that the Bible is fiction, however, he does argue that the bible has the ability to make one appreciate life more. If you follow God, you have to not take anything for granted. "At st Peter's cathedral There is stained glass There's a steeple that is reaching Up towards the heavens Such ambition never failing to amaze me" -The speaker gets to the design of a church. So much effort put into it, that it's impossible not to be amazed by how much people believe in a God. "It's either quite a master plan Or just chemicals that help us understand" -Now this here can go many ways. The master plan can either be: God created the world, and used his disappearance to test people's faith or churches obviously make a profit out of their attendants (so it's an evil master plan). The chemicals that help us understand are the belief that the world was created through science, and that's the best way to understand it. The master plan can also directly refer to the chemicals, as it would have to be a master plan to come up with all this reasoning to help deduce and understand the way the world works. However, in this case it seems that the speaker is leaning towards a "science is our creator" point of view as he later argues that there's nothing past life. "That when our hearts stop ticking This is the end And there's nothing past this There's nothing past this There's nothing past this There's nothing past this There's nothing past this" -Again a very existentialist idea. No god, no afterlife. |
Vampire Weekend – Giving Up the Gun Lyrics | 13 years ago |
So I've been hearing this song for over a year now and just realized today that it's about the modernization of Japan. I always associate this song so vividly with the my imagination of sword and gun fights that I completely looked passed the actual lyrics. The video is also so off except for the samurai playing wtih the sword. "the rising sun" "tokugawa smile" swords being locked up like a trophy and now they're giving up the gun = They've modernized so much to the point where they are transcending guns |
Owl City – Early Birdie Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is pretty obvious on what it's about. The speaker is going on trips which he doesn't make often, and is cognizant about the fact that there's always more to see and that you can't possibly see everything. As he goes on yet another one of his trips, he greets the bus taking him, appreciating the transportation. When he arrives to his destination, he tells his company that travels with him to make sure to wake up early. The days go by fast(a recurring theme I guess. See Fireflies, as he wishes the world would spin slower). Throughout his trip he appreciates the tour guides for making everything easier. |
Owl City – Fireflies Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I always interpreted this song slightly different than what mostly everyone posted. you would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies lit up the world as i fell asleep" -In this part he's talking to the listener. Lets make believe that the singer is our friend and he's telling us how we would react when ten million fireflies lit up the world as HE fell asleep. Obviously, the singer missed out on the opportunity to see the fireflies. "'Cause they'd fill the open air and leave teardrops everywhere you'd think me rude but I'd just stand and stare" -The second half of the first tells us that if he were awake, he'd stare at them all night as it was something rude to see something so majestic, yet natural that occurs everyday. He feels as if his friend doesn't appreciate everything and just stares at things dumbfounded and walks away. "I'd like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns slowly Its hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep 'Cause everything is never as it seems" -Now the chorus is a bit different. I actually interpreted this as he wishes there was more time in a day, that way he can sleep but still enjoy the night and it's mysteries-the fireflies. It's just difficult for him to stay awake because eventually fatigue hits him and it just so happens that when he falls asleep, unnatural things occur in real life. "'Cause id get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs as they tried to teach me how to dance A foxtrot above my head a sockhop beneath my bed a disco ball is just hanging by a thread" -Here he's just telling us what he would do with all these fireflies. He'd hope they would interact with him. "When i fall asleep leave my door open just a crack (please take me away from here) 'Cause i feel like such an insomniac (please take me away from here) why do i tire of counting sheep (please take me away from here) when I'm far too tired to fall asleep" -This one contradicts those who think he wants to keep dreaming. A lot of people can't sleep with the door open.. Insomniac means that you can't sleep.. and he's tired of counting sheep when he's "too tired to fall asleep" which is just a paradox. Sometimes he counts sheep, and it works as it makes him sleepy, but he's tired of falling asleep. "To ten million fireflies I'm weird 'cause i hate goodbyes i got misty eyes as they said farewell but ill know where several are if my dreams get real bizarre 'cause i saved a few and i keep them in a jar" -The singer enjoys some time with actual fireflies before he has to go to sleep. Fortunately for him he takes a few and keeps them. He doesn't want to dream, instead he wants reality. "If my dreams get real bizarre," means that if his dreams get too crazy, he'll seek refuge by seeing the fireflies in his jar. |
Lily Allen – Everyone's At It Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Anyone else think this song's beat is almost identical to Smile Like You Mean It by the Killers? I like Lily Allen, but I feel weird when I hear this song and I feel like a guy is about to sing. |
The Killers – Human Lyrics | 15 years ago |
and i always thought it was: "Will your sister be alright When you dream of home tonight There is no message 'where is she' (it sounds a lot like where is she, not we're receiving) |
The Killers – Human Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it's are we human, or are we dancer. there is no s at the end of cancer. They're classifying us, making us general. Just like there is no s in human. He isn't asking if we're humans. |
Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own" -It's pretty literal the meaning of this stanza. The speaker had control over a woman. In this case, he referred to her as a country. He felt so great with her that he believed he was on top of the world and like God himself. However, something happened and now he’s not with the girl. “I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes Listened as the crowd would sing Now the old king is dead long live the king” -Speaker felt because he had this woman he didn’t have to fear anyone. He was filled with hubris. But even after he faces a great loss he still considers himself legendary. One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand -He once owned her, and he didn’t notice when she was gone. His castle is his relationship and the pillars of salt and sand mean that the relationship wont last forever. Think about those hour glasses and how the sand/salt goes from the top to the bottom. Nothing lasts forever. “I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror my sword and shield Missionaries in a foreign field” -People were coming for him and he wanted his girlfriend to protect him. “For some reason I can't explain Once you'd gone there was never Never an honest word And that was when I ruled the world” -The speaker is nervous but he knows the truth. When his girlfriend wasn’t by his side, he always lied. “It was a wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn’t believe what I’d become” -More hubris. He fought hard to get this girl, and really did feel on top of the world. He described how people couldn’t believe that he became so amazing. They even shattered windows and made a lot of commotion to deny the truth. “Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh who would ever want to be king?” -He sees a little consequence in being in the relationship. People were jealous of him and he probably lost everyone while being with his girlfriend. His girlfriend also might have manipulated him in ways that made other people hate him even more. He lost friends because of this – “lonely string” “For some reason I can’t explain I know St Peter won’t call my name” St. Peter is like the person who decides who’s going to be king. This is a symbolism that fate(St. Peter as a holy figure in this case) wont give him a second chance to be “king” |
Office – Wound Up Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think this song is about some summer weekday... You know weekdays aren't always the best and the girl is "wound up" and stressed so she feels like she has to stay inside. The boyfriend, guy friend, or whatever you wanna call him suggests they go to the beach [tonight] and on their way there they see how the streets are somehow chaotic and distracting.. so he tells the girl how lucky she is that she is in his arms.. |
The Killers – Don't Shoot Me Santa! Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is easy to decipher I think. It's basically about this boy who grew up in an innocent lifestyle but had to take revenge sometimes. He uses an analogy - comparing Santa Claus as a Naughty Judge to anyone in real life probably the authorities. all about misunderstood childhoods. |
The Killers – Andy, You're a Star Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I always thought this song was about a homosexual teenager who probably doesn't fit in much. He sees Andy and admires him and Andy kinda knows he exists, but unfortunately, the love that the narrator has for Andy, it didn't reciprocate. Then the narrator tries to be persistent and convince himself and Andy that there's no one who likes him as much as he does. |
