Bob Dylan – Blowin' in the Wind Lyrics 15 years ago
well here we go!!!

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?

Afro-American males were not called man...they were called boy...so how many roads must a man walk down before they start to take him serious

How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?

Noah set out a white dove to find out when the earth was dry. Where should you go to find rest when there is only water?

Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?

how many wars must be fought to see that violence is not the answer.

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Now this is an interesting part. Bob dylan took the words from a childrens song; How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? the answer my friend is blowing in the wind the answer is blowing in the wind... Now what is the origin of the answer is blowing in the wind? It`s a saying in a lot of country`s (also in the netherlands) It means that you can give someone an answer but it would be `blowing in the wind` you don`t give the answer because someone won`t listen to you anyway.

Yes, 'n' how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?

how long can a system as huge as a mountain stand before it is washed away?

Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?

How long must there be slavery and denial of civil rights? were the afro-americans not long enough in america to have earned it to be free?

Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
And pretend that he just doesn't see?

well how many times can you turn your head? This sentence is about everyone who was against racisme but did not do anything about it.

I am still unsure about the final verse. There is a lot of imagery which I can`t explain. So I leave those to another brave soul ;)

Bob Dylan – A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Lyrics 15 years ago
The blue eyed son

Realy...what is it with you guys??? why should JESUS be the BLUE-eyed son. If dylan was realy talking about Jesus I guess (him being jewish and all) he would not paint a picture of an all -american Jesus-stereo type...Blue eyes, blonde hair...come-on...

The fact is that both dylan and later also his son have blue eyes...I think Dylan is talking about himself..He is the so-called prophet who can see all the terror in the world (also cuba) He is the prophet warning the people that a hard rain is going to fall...just like the prophets of the Old Testament...the old not the new one.

Although I think there are a lot of Christ references in Bob Dylan songs, I can`t stand the fact that every christian here seems to think every Dylan song is about Christ...let us not forget he used to be a non-messianic Jew and mostly studied the thora and the prophets. There is a lot of religion in his work but its not all about christianity.

I can`t believe bob dylan wrote this either...well thats because he didnt...its a traditional. Bob just came up with his own arrangement for this song...thats it. Both music and lyrics are by an unknown author. The meaning of the song is pretty clear though.

It`s about an inmate who feels betrayed by his lover. well what is there to say...its a bit to obvious i guess

Bob Dylan – All Along the Watchtower Lyrics 15 years ago
Well drigpy, I am not trying to convince you that all allong the watchtower is some sort of christian song. Since it`s not, far from it. yet you realy can`t denie the fact that the third stanza is allmost litteraly taken from the book of kings. I mean: the barefoot servants, the princes who stand on the watchtower, the two riders...That`s all a bit to coincidental. Plus the first stanza. The words they drink my wine they plow my lands is something which litteraly comes from Isiah. I don`t think every song dylan ever wrote is inspiresd by the bible, yet this one clearly is.

Just like The ballad of franky lee and judas priest was inspired by Hard Times (Charles Dickens)

He just stood there staring
At that big house as bright as any sun,
With four and twenty windows
And a woman's face in ev'ry one.

This is almost litteraly a qoute from the book. Now what`s next, are you going to mock all Dickens fans? Dude, seriously think before you speak.

Bob Dylan – All Along the Watchtower Lyrics 16 years ago
first stanza is partly taken from isiah`s prophecy about rich man who plunder the country without them knowing what theyve done. `they drink my wine, they plow my lands`

Now Dylan had some interest in tarot cards even though he did not believe in them. he did take some imigary from them. The joker refers to Jesus. The thief revers to the thief on the cross, or all sinners, lets say mankind.

Then there is some more reference to the book of isiah. the prophecy about the betrayal by Judas iscariot. God is paid 30 silverlings. the did not know what JHWH was worth.

So stanza 1: God is crying and getting angry.

in the second stanza the thief comforts the joker and is trying to convince him that there still is some good left in the world, just like abraham used to do before God destroyed soddom and gommorah.

So stanza 2:: God is being persuaded not to bring down his judgement.

then, in the 3rd stanza the song takes a shift. This part is completely taken from the book of kings. It tells the story of Jehu. Who killed all who kneeled before Baal and after that rides up to Achab to murder him for his transgressions. The sons of Achab (princes) see, while standing on a watchtower, that Jehu is aproaching. Barefoot servants of Achab try to convince Jehu to stop, but Jehu ignors them and keeps on riding. He is unstopable, for noone rides like Jehu.

So stanza 3: God will send his judgement if evil man continue to live the way they did.

Now the moral of this story is: God does not approve of evil man and even though he listens to our prayers and is mild and meek in his judgement. In the end He is the Righteous one and will not let evil triumph.

Bob Dylan – Blind Willie McTell Lyrics 16 years ago
The song tells the story of the life of Blind Willie McTell. His struggles and the world he was born in. It also clearly speculates on the fact that Blind Willie McTell never again sung the blues after his convertion. He became a Baptist preacher and started singing gospel music (never recorded)

Mind the fact that Dylan has changed the lyrics of the first stanza at live concerts into: `All the way from New Orleans to New Jerusalem` This part seams to deal with the hard times of a black blues singer who`s struggles will go on till`kingdom come. In the same verse he tells the story of many slaves who died by the hand of the KKK for their believes in Eastern Texas.

The second verse probably is somewhat more autobiographical since its telling the story of people who work at a carnival. Dylan used to work at a gypsy circus in his younger years (listen to the gaslight tapes)

The third verse then again tells the story of the slaves who came in oproar against their opressors. This part is written in beautifull imagery. For example: The magnolia starts to bloom as soon as it gets the possibility to do so. Many magnolias die because they bloom to soon.

I Truly don`t know what the fourth verse means. It might be the immage of love for woman and booze in Blind Willie`s early career.

The last verse is pretty clear as it deals with the preaching of blind willi mctell. He told people that no matter how hard live is only God will care for you. We should never give up the struggle even though there is so much pain in this world. the second part of this verse seams pretty clear to me now thanks to this qoute of geranium kisses:

the St james was a real place that opened as a hotel in New Orleans in 1859 but during the civil War was converted by occupying Union troops into a military hospital.

well that about wraps it up for today.
