There are so many clear indications here of the BDSM lifestyle: secret life, torture, absolute control, "that's an order", anal sex, servant, riding crop, a woman hanging upside down. Repent: In many countries BDSM is illegal. Drugs and alcohol have no place in BDSM and misuse/abuse can be fatal - "It is murder!" "Take the only tree that's left" indicates the eradication of forests for property development. "Destroy another fetus now" - prevent unwanted pregnancies and overpopulation. "There'll be fires on the road" somehow makes me think of the movie "Mad Max" with deserted towns and where only the strong survive. |

This is the song I can relate to more than any other song. I met a lady named Marianne in my late 20's, she in her early 30's ("we met when we were almost young"). She introduced me to Cohen's music and taught me what love is. Her inspiration got me started in writing poetry. I was married at the time and she couldn't wait for me, so she moved on and later married ("i see you've gone and changed your name again"). Although we separated 12 years ago, we still have contact with each other. We are soul mates and the day will come when we will ("cry and laugh and laugh and cry about it all again") and I can stop ("to wash my eyelids in the rain"). |
