Regina Spektor – Sailor Song Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay, I know this is old but I have to comment on this:

"If your argument were correct Regina could take, [sic, nice comma splice] a poetry class is a university, write an analysis of what she believes the song to mean and get an F, provided the professor had drawn some ridiculous meaning of his own."

You've obviously not been an English major recently, have you, sweet pea? I've never had a prof say, "Because this doesn't match my understanding of the poem (or story, or whatever), you fail, sucka." If anything it's, "Hey, this is an interesting perspective of this piece; thanks for demonstrating a different insight." As long as an interpretation has solid grounding within the text, almost anything goes here in the magical world of literature, and since we usually study dead guys that we can't contact without several candles and a Ouija board, we have no way of finding the original meaning, so various interpretations are important to study the text.

And I don't understand why you think your interpretation is the only one that's accurate. Are you, in fact, Regina Spektor? No? Then . . . ?

I think Mary Anne could be the sea, or the ship. Or both, I guess. I personally doubt it's a literal woman, though -- that just doesn't seem very Regina to me.

Regina Spektor – Folding Chair Lyrics 16 years ago
"You're right about the 'sometimes I forget' line being about insecurity, but I believe the first line is really about having the perfect body such as slimness and what's conventionally beautiful. Because than the 'insecure' line would make sure sense. Why would she feel insecure about how her body works? The actual look of it makes more sense."

Jammar, that's kind of the point. The body is perfect because it functions the way it's supposed to, and the insecurity is that it might not be beautiful.

I have nothing else to add except that the Google ads on this page are advertising actual folding chairs to me, which amuses me. :)

Heather Dale – Mordred's Lullaby Lyrics 16 years ago
Psst, nevercry -- it's *Morgan le Fay* singing to her and Arthur's son, whose name is Mordred. ;)

It's a lovely characterization of Morgan and, indirectly, Mordred. The repeated "loyalty" blended with so much bitterness reminds me of T. H. White's The Once and Future King, in which Mordred's mother was actually Morgan's sister Morgause and twisted all of her sons' emotions to be loyal to her no matter what.

Anyway, great song. A lot of intensity to the lyrics behind the pretty, soothing melody.
