Van Der Graaf Generator – Darkness (11/11) Lyrics 8 months ago
Always shitty to be the first comment, but here we go:
(Also I do not get it why this song isn't popular, it is more heavy than most heavy metal )

My take:
Dude is a vampire.
His days numbers are 'infinity'. He is really old....

Damn, now I hope for you, reader, that you are actually listening to the song.
The magic is........ in listening. "I did not choose it".
Do that.

It think this song is about a guy who turned vampire, but rather didn't.

Genesis – Jesus He Knows Me Lyrics 11 months ago
This is a very USA-oriented piece of lyrics.
I am from Europe and most in here think USA religion-money-schemes are crazy.
(Even the religious ones think so)
Genesis did a good number on the frauds.
Period.
This song is good, not briliant, and tries to expose the scum. Good job at that. :-)

Deep Purple – The Gypsy Lyrics 1 year ago
This song always made me shiver, David Coverdale sings so touching.
Lietrally this song is about a man that is getting older and want to be young again.
Appearantly he DID that before via some gypsy. (Not explained how this trick is performed).
Now the old man asks the gypsy again to do that again.
Sounds silly, in writing, but when sung by David Coverdale is works perfectly well.

The lyrics are pretty vague to interpret.
I LOVE the tune and musical side of this song, and also the deeply sung "See how this love stays divine", but I have actually no clue what it is about.
Well the obvious: I love you, I just don't think that matches to the Tea Party.
Anybody has a better clue?

The Cure – Seventeen Seconds Lyrics 2 years ago
I think you all got it wrong.
I bet young Robert is describing his first intercourse.
17 seconds is how long he lasted with his first girl.
17 seconds.
And the girl starts to sing (probably out of boredom).

Oh well, what do I know, maybe it is about suicide, opiate addiction, or whatever.
Great song.

@[jeff_f_f:40159] WHile I partly agree with you that something is lost in translation, I don\'t think the translation to English is poorly done.\r\nBut there is something in German (their mothers tongue) that makes it sound more \'real\'. Great song!

@[FlyingDutchman:35508] I also really dig this. :-)
The dynamics in this song, man, too good!
Demis singing very softly, then drums kick in (Thanks to Sideras FAT performance), and then the whole sound of this songs starts to shift.
Hypnotic, psychedelic.
Just how they managed that with 70's equipment is a mystery to me, but the result is incredible!

Oh, excuse me: The meaning of this song?
Just christian/biblical stuff. :-) The end. The apocalypse.

This band confuses me all the time.
I saw them live in Rotterdam once: Great concert. They really carry their soul on the stage.
But I am not a religious person, but this music touches me deeply every time.
I am quite certein this lyrics have some religious meaning, but it flies past me.
Since I love the music so much, somebody PLEASE explain what they are talking about.

The Animals – The Black Plague Lyrics 6 years ago
The Black Plague is about karma/revenge/even justice.
I think the lyrics are quite straightforward: Egocentric bastard who are in power (inside the castle walls) think they wait it out. The plague. But in this case they do not.
Inside the castle they get infected, the farmers outside survive.
Thank you Eric for sharing this optimistic thought. :-)

Deep Purple – Soldier of Fortune Lyrics 6 years ago
Damn, this song is hurts. Like REAL.
It is (clearly) about memories, when one was younger.
Now he is older, less impressive on the female sex, but still hunting, and most likely failing.
But when you remember how easily (as a male) made a definite impression on girls, it is hard to let go (when you are old). I feel pretty sure listening to this song this were David's feelings (digging from my own)
Hugely impressive song.
Before I sound old to this audience: I LOVED this song already when I was under 20. The song resonates truly, to all who who listen.

The Tea Party – Psychopomp Lyrics 8 years ago
Also, like many others, this is my favorite song by the Tea Party.
What about the meaning?
I always thought it is about drugs. A junkie he knows.
"I'll give you something more
And you'll fade away
One last kiss before
You fade away"

Pretty sad.

But if Jeff claims it is Greek Mythology, who am I to disagree?

The Tea Party – Transmission Lyrics 8 years ago
It is hard to to write an opinion after UDerm claimed what the author had to say about this song. ;-)
Really, what is there to add to the original thought?
To me: This "Tell me what I have when it all slips away?" and the next few lines, REALLY resonate with the thought of hindsight indeed.
Almost dead?
What did I do in my lifetime?
What is it worth?
To who? To what?

Really the hardest question to be asked by any sane person.
.......
Any answers?
I don't have them.

Kraftwerk – Spiegelsaal Lyrics 9 years ago
No need to translate to English, Kraftwerk themselves redid this song in English.
I am a bit surprised I am the first one to comment on this one: A lot of people love this song.
What is it about?
Even the greatest (rock/music/film) stars find their face in the mirror.
"Manchmal verliebte er sich in sein Spiegelbild
Und dann wiederum sah er ein Zerrbild "
Sometimes the star falls in love with what he/she sees.
Sometimes he sees a horror.

This song is about self reflection clearly, and all the confusion it can bring.
People have different sides, and it is all the harder to give a reliable interpretation of oneself.

There is also a deeper layer in to be found:
"Sogar die grössten Stars
Leben ihr Leben im Spiegelglas"

Even the Greatest Stars, live their lives in what they see in the mirror (their reflection).
It seems to hint at the notion of one's own self image, assuming it to be "ture" or real.
This song is complex, in the old Kraftwerk style.

Ween – Squelch The Weasel Lyrics 13 years ago
I have serious trouble understanding this song, and I suspect Ween does too. ;-)

But for some reason this IS their best song, as far as I am concerned. :-)
This song does something strange, it haunts. Problem is Ween is in general totally funny, so this their out-of-character-song. Ask them for details, for I can only guess.

King Crimson – Epitaph Lyrics 15 years ago
Great song!
Both musical and lyrical. One of the very best of KC.
I think this about (Cold) War/nuclear destruction.
Nukes were a very real threat in those days. (Well, they still are.)

Here is my interpretation:

The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams.
Upon the instruments of death
The sunlight brightly gleams.
[Sun shining on nukes, ready for launch]

When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams,
[We all fear nuclear holocaust, and we all dream of a better future.]
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
As silence drowns the screams.
[Nobody left to mourn our dead after nuclear war]

Between the iron gates of fate,
['iron gates of fate': Communism/capitalism?]
The seeds of time were sown,
[This East/West ideologies simply lead to this situation.]
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known;
['those' are politicians with their hand on the red button]

Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules.
['Knowledge' as in E=MC^2. Too much knowlegde, too litlle wisdom.]
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools.
[Well, no need to explain THAT one. ;-)]

Confusion will be my epitaph.
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
[Double meaning: 1) Image of postnuke world where he walks. 2) metaphorical: 'I' = humankind.]
If we make it we can all sit back
and laugh.
[If we don't destroy ourselfs, we can laugh about it one day.]

But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying,
Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying.
[Well, he is NOT optimistic about chances for laughter tomorrow...]

This is how I hear this song. But most concepts can easily be stretched to a broader meaning as others did in their interpretation.
Great, but haunting song. :-)

Uriah Heep – Gypsy Lyrics 16 years ago
Lyrics are basic indeed. The composition is NOT.
This is rock as I like it the most.
The best rock I knew was Status Quo and Kiss, when I heard Gypsy.
I turned me into a Uriah Heep fan in 1 hour.
This band is totally underestimated in my (very heavy) very humble opinion...
In their best days days they stood equal to Black Sabbath for atmosphere, and equal to Deep Purple for compositions.
And Gypsy? One of their best songs ever. :-) :-)

Ween – Squelch The Weasel Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, I really have no clue what this song is about, but somehow I like it far above all other ween songs.

By the way: In my studentyears (beginning 1990) in Amsterdam, Ween was performing on many thursdaysnights in a place called Korsakoff.
The place was often filled with max 20 people, and they had their taperecorder as drums. QUite silly but good fun.
Nice guys, if not sober. ;-)

Jethro Tull – Locomotive Breath Lyrics 16 years ago
Firstly: This song ROCKS. It setted a new standard for 'best rockmusic' for me and many others a long time ago. :-)
It has serious swing, haunting lyrics, and 150% drive.

The meaning?
This song is obviously (for me) about death, not about drugs/sex. Ian addresses those subjects elsewhere.

In the shuffling madness
of the locomotive breath,
runs the all-time loser,
headlong to his death.

[Well, that is for openers.
Hardly any hidden meanings I'd say.
all-time loser = every (wo)man.
We all die in the end. Period.]

He feels the piston scraping -
steam breaking on his brow -

[His body is degrading, he is getting old]

Old Charlie stole the handle and
the train it won't stop going -
no way to slow down.

['The handle' is the handle to stop the train. It is not there to his (and mine) frustration. The train goes fast and will crash eventually somewhere.
This is a clear metaphore for (human) life.

'Old Charlie' is still a guess for me, but I liked the previously mention Charles Darwin explanation, which seems to fit well. Thanks for that, WYWH!]

He sees his children jumping off
at the stations - one by one.

[He grows older, his kids leave his house, his life.....]

His woman and his best friend -
in bed and having fun.

[I am not sure why his wife fucks his best friend, but maybe Ian just wanted to torture this poor guy a little more. :P ]

He's crawling down the corridor
on his hands and knees -
Old Charlie stole stole the handle and
the train it won't stop going -
no way to slow down.

[He tries and tries, even on hands and knees. But to no avail, the train won't stop.]

He hears the silence howling -
catches angels as they fall.
And the all-time winner
has got him by the balls.

[All time winner = death. Death ALWAYS wins.]

He picks up Gideon's Bible -
open at page one -

[I think it is open at page one because the guys brains started working somewhere down his life, so he sees no reason to read on. He lost his faith.]

God He stole the handle and
the train it won't stop going -
no way to slow down.

[This last one sounds like a joke to me (not sure):
The first time it sounds like 'God! Somebody stole the handle!'.
There 'God' is just an expression of frustration.

But another options is:
IF he decides to be a religious guy, God was the one that stole the handle.
Why did God create him, and then take away the handle (so he can stop his train-to-death)?

But more likely He is just Charlie again, whoever that might be. ;-)
]

LOVE this song!
