I think it's poking fun at the glamourous rock star life, but also kind of from the perspective of one of those who lives that life. Red Rover is a game where a group of children divide evenly into teams and each team joins hands in a chain. One team shouts out "Red Rover Red Rover send (a name of another team's player) right over". That kid has to run and try and break the bond between to children. If the kid breaks the chain he/she can grab one of the kids who's hand let go and take them to their team. If not, they have to join the other team. parhelion is a large halo or glare created by the sun's rays passing through clouds (or something). they're really neat. |

This song reminds me of my mom's work with illiterate poor people (she was a teacher). Almost all of her students were women with many children and little money. They were really sad, but mostly strong spirits. I've heard my mom describe this song as "feministic". I'm not sure I agree but we both see the poor single mother, Lady Madonna, shining through. Call it blasphemous, but Notre Dame (Our Lady, Virgin Mary, what have you), reminds me of poor women taking care of a family. |

this is possibly my favorite song every by Belle and Sebastian, and it is definitely my favorite off of Tigermilk. I think it portrays high school very well, and as an artist I recieve(d) a lot of flak for it in high school (and still do in college). I was always ostracized and often even the most popular kids feel alone in school. |

I love this song so much. This and The Past is a Grotesque Animal are my two favorite Of Montreal songs. A word about 12-tone: Some have described it earlier, accurately, but not completely understandable to a non-music person. From what I remember from music theory, 12-tone is a musical practice in which one cannot repeat one of any of the 12 chromatic tones until all 12 have been played. The effect is, as someone said before, generally completely horrible. Das Mondschein (spelling?) is a classic example, and I think everyone in my Music Theory class cringed upon hearing the first notes. I believe 12-tone was a response to the horrors of the first world war? But, I'm no expert! haha Anyways this song is ridiculously ironic, seeing as only a complete art snob would get all of it (come on, like EVERYONE knows EVERY REFERENCE?) and yet he moques all snobbery. =) |
