Reading through the lyrics for what must be the millionth time and it just hit me, these lyrics have to be about his dad, Blackie Dammit. Anthony wrote Californication admist one of his final rehab visits and was also writing Scar Tissue (his memoir) in congruence. During this era, Anthony was going through a lot. This song is about acceptaning an addiction and getting the support he needed to over come it. Many of the lyrics hint toward the sense of reborn, and unity with nature. This can be metaphor for when finally kicking an addiction and being whole again. Anthony has never had a norma life and this was specifically exacerbated by the fact that his dad was a drug user/dealer and literally introduced him to what could've been his death. "I wanna taste what it taste to come face to face with common grace" is a hint towards that reborn feeling again. And what really makes me further tie the Blackie connection is "I wrote a letter to you, getting over myself." In rehab, you're encouraged to write letter to pass grievances and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the letters was addressed to Blackie, himself. Plus Anthony has always had that adoration towards his dad and has regarded him as his idol in many ways, so the lyrics "I'll do anything for you" reflect that about his dad. I wouldn't be surprise if most of the songs in Californication have to do with these similar themes. I'm a big big fan of RHCP (since I was 12, 22 now) and I love this song to bits! |

I thought it was kinda very straightforward. I imagined it was about someone loving someone who was lost and over the years seeing her get caught up in trouble over and over again. But then the protagonist kinda saves her and shows her what real love is but they drift apart. And finally one day she is getting married and she has her life cleaned up but the protagonist always felt that when she did find her way back it would lead her to him not to some other guy. The end is just kind of his vow that he will never let her go. Its a really amazing song. |

I think Anthony is telling his son that he loves him and to live in wonders and the line especially, "Something good don't come your way Just look out your door." It is like fatherly advice. It is about a relationship that goes back and forth and it really doesnt seem to be going anywhere but no one will put on the brakes or even say it outloud. I think if anything that this song is like for her mom and telling her that she is gay. It's her stuff and her problem and she should deal with it on her own. And the whole thing about God is about how Carrie is Jewish and it must have been harder for her parents to be okay with her lifestyle. And I also think the whole idea that religion implies about being gay must be hard and that's why she says I guess I need your help now like as though she is not even sure if what she is doing or if even who she is, is the right person. So far I have only listened to their first three albums and I am trying to get along to listen to the others. But they are amazing. I have been listening to them straight almost religously for a month now. |

I hate how people assume that every sleater Kinney song is about being gay or that corin Tucker is singing about being in love with a girl or even Carrie brownstein herself. This song specifically is very general about the terms and the gender it's being reffered to. In any case is about being in love in general. Not one single gender is signaled out in this song. It's just a great song about the feelings of being in love for the first time. When I first heard the intro to this song and that little guitar line that kinda spirals and the whole album in general, I knew the potential of sleater Kinney and now looking back at them, they have exceeded my expectations and anyone elses for that matter. |

Wow I can't believe people haven't commented on this but beyond stating the obvious, I'll write my comment. This song, I think is about for some reason about older men having sex with younger, underage girls. The whole bit about being in the sky and being almost "holy" and "pure," made me think about school girls and how they sometimes try to seduce older men. It's basically almost like the girls won't regret it because theyre young and dumb and almost innocent but the older men will because it is just pathetic of them. Well, yeah, whatever, that's just my interrpetation. |

When I first heard this song I thought of one thing:
"History so strong" : I think refers to his past and how he was charged for being a sex battery
adding on to the whole "When the verdicts comes round" and the "Eyes shinning with revalation" is the
shock fans had.
Also I agree with everyone else that "Save the population" is about sex
However there are some other references like: "sell it to the lexicon" for some reason reminds me of
the Lexicon Devil, a song from the Germs, which happens to be Anthony favorite band.
And that is my pick on it. |
