Bruce Springsteen – One Step Up Lyrics 12 years ago
Excellent post; you're a hell of a writer, and while reading what you had to say, I was taken back to my prom, back in the 80s, and the girl who should have been there but wasn't, because I let fear guide my actions. She slipped away, and I'll never forget her. I hope these days, my own steps are more up than back, but hope can be a tricky thing.

Thank you for sharing such a personal, painful experience.

The Kinks – Sitting By the Riverside Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree, it's a lovely song. To me, it's about finally finding that right person and learning that there is a beautiful simplicity to life once that person is found. Just sitting by the riverside, I'm content and my life is complete.

Michelle Shocked – Anchorage Lyrics 16 years ago
To add to iluomo's entry...I think the song's about a couple of friends who used to be wild and free, but one of them got married, had some kids, and found herself kind of stuck in Alaska as a housewife while the other is still out there, living the musician's life.

Sounds like Leroy might be a little overbearing, since it seems like she can't even write a letter to an old friend without him butting in and adding his two cents.

So, maybe the song is about the peril of settling down at the expense of your dreams.

ManicMonkey nailed it. I wish I could add something, but it's all right there.

The The – This Is the Day Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with those who say it's a song about missed opportunities and untapped potential.

And while friends and family think you're lucky, all that's holding your life together are memories of what used to be, and you can't go back at any price.

Jefferson Starship – Count On Me Lyrics 16 years ago
A sweet, simple love song with a nice melody and clean musicianship. Sometimes that's all I need. Beautiful song.

John Prine – The Other Side Of Town Lyrics 16 years ago
Another slice of domestic bliss. The wife isn't the girl he married anymore and rather than get out of the relationship, he just checks out mentally when she starts badgering him, so much so that this is just part of life.

Bruce Springsteen – Girls In Their Summer Clothes Lyrics 16 years ago
dqcpsu, an amazing interpretation and I think you nailed it perfectly.

"Love's a fool's dance
I ain't got no shoes but I still got my feet"

Additionally, it's got that big fat Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" orchestration that I just love.

John Lennon – Watching The Wheels Lyrics 16 years ago
As I grow older (41 at the moment), this song takes on deeper meaning. I see many people struggling and fighting so hard for the things they think they need, the things they believe will define and complete them, and yet I feel no need to struggle so hard for things that ultimately mean so little.

My hope is that with time, others will see that all we really need to pursue is inner happiness.

After seeing the above entries, there's nothing further I could offer that hasn't already been said better.

I'd always felt it was a beautiful love song, and it's reassuring to see that sentiment expressed by so many others.

John Prine – Hello In There Lyrics 16 years ago
John Prine cuts to the soul of humanity like no other. To comfortablynumb, this song tears me every time I hear it.

I lost my father a year ago and while we were close, this song made me realize that there are so very many older people who are just wasting away from loneliness and neglect.

John Prine – Sam Stone Lyrics 16 years ago
"Climbing walls while sitting in a chair" refers to a person on an excessive high or alternately, going through withdrawals.

"Played his last request while the room smelled just like death" - his last high, the final overdose. Also, hardcore junkies will often cease bathing because when their pores are clogged with dirt, grime and whatever else, they stay high longer. I guess after a while, that would smell like death.

John Prine – All The Best Lyrics 16 years ago
I guess the song's pretty cut and dry; a relationship falls apart and while he wishes her all the best, it's painfully obvious that the experience has created a bitter cynicism with which he struggles.

Changing hearts like changing cars, dumping a Christmas tree once it's no longer useful; the feelings of a person who became obsolete without even realizing it.

Been down that road myself. It hurts.
