The Doors – Love Her Madly Lyrics 10 years ago
pretty sure it's about our weird human way of wanting what we can't have-- somehow people can become more appealing when we can't have them. hence, "don't you love her as she's walking out the door"

The Format – I'm Ready, I Am Lyrics 12 years ago
some people still continue to love people, despite, or sometimes because of, the other person's inability/disinterest (apathy) in loving them back. it's a very strange, self-defeating thing....from what i understand. i'm usually the apathetic person in the relationship.

Dido – White Flag Lyrics 12 years ago
I love that this song is still on the radio. Here's my shot at interpreting it:

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you,
Or tell you that.
( She did something to him, clearly, or he called it off-- so as far as he's concerned it's over)

But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
where's the sense in that?
(She probably came back to him, attempting to salvage it by telling him she cares about him, but it was too late)

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were

(She's just speaking her mind, as inconvenient as it may be)

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

(She's not going to stop loving him just because he says it's over-- she will take the blows but it won't change how she feels)

I know I left too much mess and
destruction to come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "it's over"
then I'm sure that that makes sense

(She understands where he's coming from, but she doesn't feel that because something is officially over, that this person cannot still live in her heart and mind and vice versa)

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on....

(She's envisioning sometime in the future when they meet and her feelings are unchanged-- Maybe it's easier to think about continuing to love him, even if it's unrequited, instead of having her feelings fade completely. He'll think shes moved on, but it will be her best kept secret that shes gone on loving him all these years.)

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

Miniature Tigers – Bullfighter Jacket Lyrics 13 years ago
Really love this band and this song.
I think the bullfighter jacket/nothing beneath is about having a tough/ "i don't care" exterior so as to hide true feelings, and I think the "you" in the "you've got your bullfighter jacket on" really refers to the person telling the story.
"I had to take my mask off to kiss you in the street" of course means they had to strip away their pride and ego and just face up to having feelings for this person.
Also love the "I know you're half crazy but I don't care"-- who isn't half crazy, anyway.

I can see that as a very valid interpretation, but to me it's more about the musician/artist lifestyle.

The Microphones – I Felt Your Shape Lyrics 13 years ago
It was dumb to hold so tight
But last night
On the birthday in the kitchen
My grip was loose my eyes were open

----
This is really hitting home with me right now. I take it to mean he has regret about clinging so tightly to this girl, probably driving her away-- and now of course, now that it's over, he has a lot more clarity and is kind of saying "Look, I've changed, I won't rely on you so much anymore"

Eric Hutchinson – Back To Where I Was Lyrics 13 years ago
Sounds like he might be just reflecting on how he contemplates change, but never really truly welcomes it and even resists it ("makes us wish we'd paid respects before") He's finding that although he tries new things, and puts himself in new situations, he always feels like he winds up "back to where he was". He says too that "I'm getting older but I'm still the same"

This is just how I see it because this is how I view change. It never seems to change me. I'm never moved in ways that make me feel like "Gee, I am SOO different than I was x number of years ago." I actually had a friend's parent tell me that I was exactly the same, but she said it in a good way. Basically, change is ovverrated is what I get from this song. <3

Field Music – Them That Do Nothing Lyrics 13 years ago
Do they mean get to work as in, work on defining your "success" by your own standards? "Them that do nothing make no mistakes"- Are they saying this is a good thing or a bad thing? Probably bad. I think they're alluding to the fact that making mistakes is crucial for your growth.

I find this song really interesting, but as with most things, I need help with the interpretation.

Dido – Thank You Lyrics 14 years ago
No, I agree!

I definitely think that the "looking back on something that isn't anymore" is spot on. Especially if you see the music video--her house gets demolished! Very symbolic to me when that crane is tearing down something that was once a beautiful and she found to be comforting...this is a love song about how she once felt.

Noah and the Whale – Jealous Kind Of Love Lyrics 14 years ago
No comments? Wow, I guess I just discovered this song at the perfect time..

"The jealous kind of love" can be the most confusing/heartbreaking kind EVER! You never know if you are truly missing the person, or if it is simply your turning green with envy because they are seeing someone new. You don't want to admit that you are beating yourself up over something as silly as jealousy, (you're so above that, right?) But sometimes the fact of the matter is that what TRULY bugs you is that they are happily seeing someone..and you aren't.

Amazing song, it's honestly helping me so much right now--a nice, light take on a rather heavy and quite depressing situation!

John Mayer – Great Indoors Lyrics 16 years ago
i love this song,
especially the first part, about the post it's. i just listened to it and looked up at my big "to do" list and laughed. sometimes we just can't help but to wonder about what things are like outside of what we surround ourselves with (school, work)-- mayer is saying don't just let it be a thought, be proactive about it. if you've been wondering what something is like, go discover it for yourself and make it more than just a passing thought.

Kevin Devine – Lord, I Know We Don't Talk Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't mean to start a religious debate- but I think he is like me, an agnostic. He wants to believe in a higher power, but sometimes circumstance makes him question how much we can really attribute to one person that is allegedly in control of everything that happens. Afterall, what we see is much more convincing than anything metaphysical- at least in my experience.

Kevin Devine – Murphy's Song Lyrics 16 years ago
i can really relate to being a dog lover.

i like how he says "i've never been a joiner, no i've quit every team i've been on," because when you have a dog, there is a level of loyalty that dogs possess that you can't always find with people, and so kd, as a dog lover, will never give up on his dog. so cute :)

Kevin Devine – Me & My Friends Lyrics 16 years ago
not neccessarily a "bad" group of people, more just the uncertain feelings that everyone feels about their friends after awhile. he sings about how things can sometimes be painstakingly stagnant (same corner booth, same smith street bar,) and although you still love these people dearly, sometimes you feel like you are in a different place and it's the emotions that come with that which he tries to articulate. brilliant.

Kevin Devine – You're Trailing Yourself Lyrics 16 years ago
i'm not going to lie, i haven't completely figured out the meaning of this one. but that's what makes music beautiful really, all that matters is that it's a great sound and he is a ridiculous lyricist.

submissions
Kevin Devine – No One Else's Problem Lyrics 16 years ago
i think the line "i was consumed with proving you were a liar, but what good would that do? we both know the truth" means that he tried so hard to make himself dislike this person, and maybe even tried incriminating them falsely, but he just can't let go and knows that it's a defense mechanism of his to try to talk himself out of liking this person.

everone else doesn't seem to have a problem with this person, they are likely very likable, but he has special ties, and so he's having trouble making things work.

Kate Nash – Nicest Thing Lyrics 16 years ago
i don't know that i agree with people that bash lyrics that are too "simple" or "straightforward"..i mean, thats how all things should be shouldn't they? honest and frank.

and that's exactly how kate is, which makes me adore her.

i love the lyric "i wish you knew when i said two sugars, actually i meant three". i mean how often is it that you wish someone could just get you without having to explain yourself? she's just really got a way with resonating with anyone that has experienced a one-sided relationship.

Kevin Devine – Tomorrow's Just Too Late (newer version) Lyrics 16 years ago
ugh, this song is perfection.
did i hear right that this was written about his aunt or something that stayed too long in a bad relationship?
whatever the case, this song is truly moving. it can be so difficult, especially for women, to realize when things have gone sour sometimes. if the person i was in a relationship hadn't moved, i know i would've been stuck and it would've been near impossible for me to break it off.

wow, i just adore this.

John Mayer – The Hurt Lyrics 16 years ago
love this song, and john of course.
rather groundbreaking.. i mean- at least in my experience, it seems like love has kind of gone to shit these days. mostly because of this kind of "convenience" thing that comes with having busy schedules/ commitment issues/ and just the overall complexity of relationships.

The Format – Tie The Rope Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the " Nobody's been dealing so fold your hand, come on and fold your hand" is brilliant...I mean how often does this happen where there is just a complete lull in a relationship because there has been too much hardship, and no one really knows where to go? there is hope, but sometimes you just have to let it go or "fold your hand"

Kevin Devine – Longer That I'm Out Here Lyrics 16 years ago
this song just really hits the nail on the head about what it feels like to be suddenly apart from someone and the uncertainty that comes with the choices you and that person have made.

i'm really relating to the "i miss you all the time, but i'm blocking it out"...it sucks when you aren't on the same level as someone and it takes everything in you just to move on.

submissions
Sondre Lerche – Modern Nature Lyrics 16 years ago
i never thought about homosexuality at all while listening to this song.

i kind of took "modern nature" as the kind of "apathy trumps love" way of being that has sorta swept our generation. and so, as opposed to this new being sad and alone thing, he's saying forget this...how about love?

submissions
Kevin Devine – Probably Lyrics 16 years ago
wow upon listening to this song again it really relates to the situation that i'm in..

i think it's about having someone figured out, "so i should probably say something to you.." but then figuring it's just not worth it to try to tell them of their faults.. because it only causes more problems, as most people are just stubborn as hell (and it's true!)

submissions
Kevin Devine – Just Stay Lyrics 16 years ago
yeah i mean the drug reference is pretty obvious- "let's shake and trade".."sharing a chopping block"...and there are many other references in other songs as well. plus, i just saw him in lansing and he more or less admitted to being an alcoholic and having done a lotta drugs in his day. doesn't make him any less amazing of an artist to me!

submissions
Kevin Devine – You're My Incentive Lyrics 16 years ago
basically i think kevin is realizing that this girl is a little hopeless, but he is really pulling for her and maybe even sees a bit of himself and her, thus "and if you go, i go too"..something is telling him that this is worth exploring.

he is fantastic, i just met him over the weekend and i was completely star struck :-D
