Alice Cooper – I Love America Lyrics 15 years ago
'Pocket Fisherman' and 'Crazy Glue' were two products often sold on US television in the late '70s and early '80s.

The pocket fisherman was a plastic folding fishing reel and reel. A cheap toy every ten-year-old had to have.

Crazy glue was simply cyanoacrylate. The commercial often featured a guy wearing a hard hat glued to steel beam and presumably hanging dangerously high above a construction site with only the amazing bonding strength of Crazy Glue staying sure death.

The song highlights stereotypical redneck attitudes accurately. Satirizing while simultaneously complimenting ‘Wonder Bread White' American cultural of which I’m guilty of being a member.

And yes, I also loved what the Indians did to Custer.

Styx – Street Collage Lyrics 16 years ago
I was only seven years old when Styx released the album with the above dialouge so I really can't comment on the accuracy of the views, although it does reflect what I've heard those older than me say about that era's.

I do note the contrast Styx created by placing this pessimistic dialouge bewtween two songs ('Children Of The Land' and 'Fanfare For The Common Man') that are so optimistic.

I find it ironic when the man says, "kids nowadays, that's the whole thing too much money, they've got too much money ...".

I've heard the same sentiments out the mouths of members of that youthful (then) generation when caroing about the latest generation's values.

It reminds me to pause and put the current affairs of our nation and society into perspective.

What will today's youth say about tomorrow's? I predict the above sentiments will return again like an echo... at least to those that give themselves over to pessimism.

Bruce Springsteen – Born in the U.S.A. Lyrics 16 years ago
"Born down in a dead man's town... " -- A little contrary to picture perfect Americana portrayed in 'Father Knows Best' and 'Leave it to Beaver' aint it?

"Got in a little hometown jam... " -- Jail or fight. I respect those that chose to fight, but it still wasn't right.

"Come back home to the refinery... " -- Think our economy is bad today? Pull your head out your arse. The 70's were a true economic nightmare.

"Went down to see my V.A. man... " -- America only supports winners pal. Besides, those who spit on you at the airport are in charge now.

"I had a brother at Khe Sahn... " -- Actual kin or comrade in arms? Ask a Vietnam veteran. They will tell you there is no difference.

"I got a picture of him in her arms now... " -- There was no such thing as closure for the 'Nam vet in the 70's and early 80's. If this song were written a few years later the picture would have been left at an ebony wall in D.C.

"I'm ten years burning down the road... " -- The war is over, yet it isn't.

---------

While watching the news the other day at lunch with a coworker who served as a Navy Corpsman in Vietnam, I observed that we were about 40 years too late in learning how to treat our veterans.

He answered me with silence... eyes lowered.

Damn those that dared to humble the bravest of a generation. You and your spawn will NEVER have my support or respect.
