Steel Panther – Gold Digging Whore Lyrics 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure the first two lines are:

Don't you go buying her dinner
Don't you buy her Gucci shoes
If it comes down to you or a pile of cash
I can tell you what she's gonna choose

The ones that were submitted here and elsewhere are laughably bad.

Sybreed – From Zero to Nothing Lyrics 5 years ago
I spoke to Benjamin Nominet when Sybreed toured Sydney, and he told me that this song meant the most to him, from the entire Sybreed catalogue.

In hindsight I wish I had asked him to elaborate more on this - because after his sudden departure from the band, with little explanation why or what happened, one can't help but think that the sentiments expressed in the lyrics here might have been a contributing factor in his decision.

Sybreed – God Is An Automaton Lyrics 6 years ago
Humans are inherently evil - predisposed to violence, "mindlessly programmed for boundless rage". Are we just dancing to our DNA? Which would certainly be the case if you believe in the scientific worldview - we're just the product of time plus matter plus chance. We *evolved* to be evil - we grew to distrust each other and to declare war on our kin for greed and personal gain.

Or were we deliberately designed this way, by a "watchful shaper"?

The lyrics of the song are more ambiguous than you'd think. But the title of the song suggests that Benjamin is leaning towards the latter. But he still poses the topic as a question, rather than making a statement: "SHOULD we blame the maker of everything divine?"

It's up to you to draw that conclusion.

However let me say this: If God is an automaton, and we're created in His image, we too are ALSO automatons - we are not free, we are totally determined to be evil and behave like "mindless fiends" as Benjamin puts it. But if we're totally determined as automatons, and we're pre-wired to think and behave the way that we do - we are merely computers: data in, evil response out.

But we have to ask ourselves: was Sybreed FREE to write this song? Was Benjamin FREE to compose these lyrics, out of his own volition? Are we, his audience, FREE to listen to this song, and enjoy it for it's marvellousness?

If so, we are rising above the bondage of total subjectivity. And the moment you do this, you're violating determinism.

...We're evil because we WANT TO BE.

Dire Straits – News Lyrics 6 years ago
@[nachoz:23772] I especially love after the line "He just kicks it alive", the guitar becomes significantly more lively, followed by the guitar solo - signifying that the engine has come to life. Amazing songwriting and composition. We don't get this poetic nuance in music anymore.

The way the album flows, from "Isolate" which is relatively mild and almost soothing, to this song - is such a fantastic punch in the face.

The Presets – This Boys In Love Lyrics 7 years ago
"Goodbye, this town, these streetss, your friends
You'll never see this place again"

^ So dark and ominous. It certainly gives the song a Shakespearean "suicide pact" vibe as @[giggleguts:17820] suggested above.

Ghost – Square Hammer Lyrics 7 years ago
There's a lot of reference to Freemasonry in this song.

On the title, "Square Hammer":

"The Masonic gavel is an emblem of authority used by the Master of the lodge to show his executive power over the assemblage by punctuating its actions.

In this capacity, order is maintained and a structured outcome to the proceedings is achieved.

The common gavel is also one of the working tools of the Entered Apprentice.

Operative Gavel

In the operative stonemason era, the common gavel was a tool used to hew (break) the rough edges from the stones (ashlars) in order to perfectly fit them into place.

Speculative Gavel

In speculative Freemasonry, the Masonic Gavel is used to symbolically divest the heart and consciousness of all the vices and superfluities (excesses) of life in order to ready ourselves as if we were living stones, open to be shaped into a spiritual being that is pleasing to our Creator.

A True Masonic Gavel

What does a true Masonic gavel look like? The head of the gavel is rectangular, flat on one end and can be slightly pinched or come to a point on the other end."

Source: http://www.masonic-lodge-of-education.com/masonic-gavel.html

Now, onto the lyrics - more specifically, the line:
"Are you on the square?
Are you on the level?
Are you ready to swear right here, right now"

If you look at the poetry of Rob Morris (who was a Freemason), his most famous poem was called "The Level and the Square"

This poem starts off with:

"We meet upon the Level, and we part upon the Square,
What words of precious meaning those words Masonic are,
Come let us contemplate them, they are worthy of our thought,
With the highest and the lowest and the rarest they are fraught.

We meet upon the Level, though from every station come,
The king from out his palace, and the poor man from his home;
For the one must leave his diadem outside the mason's door,
And the other finds his true respect upon the chequered floor."

Finally, an interesting insight by a Reddit user named killcokidd on the Ghost subreddit:

"On the Square - When a stonemason cuts a block to use in the construction of a building, it must be perfectly shaped so that it will support the other blocks that surround it. The block’s sides must all be perfectly straight with no faults, so that it will do its part as just one small piece of a much larger building. To check the reliability of his workmanship, the stonemason uses a tool called a square shaped like a right angle, to determine whether the sides and angles of the stone are perfect. Freemasons use the term "on the square" to describe their trust in each other. A man who is on the square is honest and reliable, and is a strong part of the whole community around him. The term is also used to mean “just between you and me.” When one Mason tells another Mason something he’d like to be kept private, he’ll often say “This is on the square.”

On the Level - To a Freemason, means just that — all Freemasons are Brothers who meet on the same level, regardless of their social or economic status outside the lodge. Princes, presidents, and captains of business are no better or more important than bus drivers, plumbers, and paper boys when they sit in the lodge together. Masonry does not detract from a man’s accomplishments, nor does it exalt him above his Brothers because of his position outside the lodge."

It seems Ghost is delving into the clandestine underworld of Freemasonry and satirising that establishment the same way they do to organised religions.

Intelligent, fascinating, and a kick-ass song.

Gojira – The Cell Lyrics 7 years ago
I saw an interview with Mario where he said that the meaning of this song is the epidemic of people addicted to their phones and glued to a 5 inch screen - and a film clip around this idea was conceptualized but never realized.

Instead, the concept appeared fleetingly in the film clip for Stranded where a character is looking into a hand held mirror which signifies the phone.

From a lyrics perspective, I think Mario and Joe take this concept further and say that all the distractions of the digital world are making us more introspective ("I'm locked inside me") and preoccupied ("Overcrowded in your brain") with trivial material diversions.

"Get me out of here", "find a way out", "I have to let it go" - divorce yourself from these trappings and be free - Truly *free*.

Rammstein – Spring (English) Lyrics 8 years ago
Whenever I listen to this song, I'm reminded of the documentary called "The Bridge", which discussed people committing suicide by jumping off The Golden Gate Bridge.

A film crew set up cameras for 365 days, filming people walking over the bridge, and zooming in on people who were obviously there only to jump to their deaths. The film makers would then talk to the families/friends of the dead and discuss what led to their demise.

The documentary is fascinating, macabre and powerful. The filmmakers had the best intentions at heart - to raise awareness and to lobby for the installation of security fencing on the bridge and prevent more suicides.

I strongly recommend watching it, if you haven't seen it.

...but listening to this song you can't help but think that the filmmakers perhaps could have also done *something* to save those doomed people they filmed jumping, instead of idly standing there on the shoreline, camera in hand.

You also can't help but think that maybe, just maybe, in the interests of making the film as dramatic as possible, the camera crew were watching through the viewfinder with keen anticipation at the victims as they stood on the edge, and uttered under their breaths: "spring".

Fascinating.

Similar to the article you posted, have you people seen the documentary called "The Bridge"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_(2006_documentary_film)

"The Bridge is a 2006 documentary film... that consists of the results of one year's filming of the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004, which captured a number of suicides"

"The camera crew consisted of 12 people that showed up each morning for an entire year to film the bridge. During filming, on average, one person jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge every 15 days".

Essentially, the Documentary was created to help raise awareness and be the catalyst for San Francisco to take more measures to prevent these suicides, but one cannot help but think that the film crew, deep down and in the back of their minds may have been zoomed in on these doomed jumpers, seeing them hesitate, pace back and forth before finally stepping to the edge... and then they willed them on under their breath: "Spring".

Obviously, a conspiracy song for September 11, echoing a common opinion that the terrorist attacks were actually a "controlled demolition".

The anguished voice you hear in the track at 2:40 are the last words of Kevin Cosgrove as the tower collapsed. The original can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbOzSeu6sJA (the part you hear in the track starts at 4:30)

Brian Head Welch – Die Religion Die Lyrics 13 years ago
I dunno if I entirely agree with this... some religions and their rules may not create "ideal" Christians/Muslims/Buddhists etc as you would like to define it, however most people who are brought up in religions are instilled with an inherent moral code that keeps them away from the kinda mess that Head found himself in the first place. Head is lucky he saw the light, but if religion were entirely dead, how many more people would die in a hedonistic existance, the type that Head and his former band mates lived for all those years?

My point is, not all religion is totally evil and should be exterminated.

That said, it is probably the best song on the album I really repect Head for everything he has been through and for pulling himself out of it.

Fear Factory – Oxidizer Lyrics 14 years ago
The same way that a single molecule of oxygen can ignite and incinerate everything in its path, so too can the hatred and fury that lies within a man's mind, heart and soul.

"Consuming tide, floods my mind
Filling my soul with rage
Just one spark in my heart
To damn this world in flames"

So, so awesome. In my opinion, the best song on a brilliant album.

Fear Factory – Fear Campaign Lyrics 14 years ago
The start of the official video explains it well:

"It was not necessary to camouflage the insanity of the world of today within a science fiction setting.
The world today has become the world that writers predicted long ago.
The controlling authorities are constantly, and successfully, utilizing the fear tactic to control the masses, through misinformation and distraction.

Fear is bondage. Fear is slavery. Fear is Hell. Fear is control."

What a song, and what an album. Thank you Fear Factory.

To SilentAenima: you say Religion is for the weak. I put it to you that it is the weak that indulge in drugs, alcohol, and all forms of escapism. It is the weak that seek self-gratification and assurance in self esteem by degrading others and dismissing their opinions.
We are ALL equally weak as shit and look for comfort in all the wrong places. So let's not pretend that we know more than the next person because that just makes you a fool as well.

Fear Factory – Securitron (Police State 2000) Lyrics 16 years ago
This was the song that opened my eyes to Fear Factory. What power.

In terms of meaning, I think it is fair to say that it is about the degradation of social liberties on a massive scale, possibly a warning of things to come:

"All must abide and all must adhere"
Future oppression becoming more clear
This is a warning so you must take heed
This coming vision is reality"

Burton's right too. Look at the new laws introduced under the disguise of anti-terrorism - people can be detained without a fair trial and subjected to torture methods to extract a "confession". And the examples Num_shadow raised is a good point too.

What an awesome song. Thank you Fear Factory.

Tool – Vicarious Lyrics 16 years ago
When this album first came out I was listening to Vicarious while driving. I was stuck in traffic behind a taxi that had an advertisement on it for an exhibition called "The Human Body", where various aspects of the body are studied and put on display, like muscle/bone structures, skin fibres, vital organs etc etc. Funnily enough, the photo on the ad was very much like the cover of Lateralus, with the photo of a human being illustrating the layers beneath the skin.
What really caught my attention were the words in bold italic underneath the image: "REAL BODIES ON DISPLAY"

This song really made sense to me after I saw that: I could picture people at the exhibition bypassing all the fake plastic skeletons, respiratory system drawings, etc etc, and heading straight for the "real bodies" where they would stand in droves and "stare like zombies" at this dead body on the table.

I could also imagine that people "wouldn't give pause" to even consider going to the exhibition until they learn that real dead bodies are on display. And the fact that the advertisers found it necessary to even mention it on the ad as if that makes the whole experience more "appealing".

But the funny thing is: I am no different. I would have been there front row centre, looking at the dead body. Even though it's wrong, you can't help but look. "Why can't we just admit it?"

We are all "Part vampire, Part warrior. Carnivore and voyeur." We are infatuated at the misfortune and suffering of others. "Like blood to a vampire"

What genius. Thank you Tool.

Anyway, I was late to work that day. But who cares!!!

One last parting thought: Think about all those times you watch TV, or watch a movie, or even watch a motor race and hope for a crash, a murder scene, etc. We are all monsters. We just need to admit it.
