Sly And The Family Stone – You Caught Me Smilin' Lyrics 2 years ago
@[SuperstarMouse:38796] well..think about it like this. You think a drug addict doesn't know what people think about them? they know, on top of the pain and everything else, that the things they do just to try to live without emotional anguish makes people look down on them, see them as less than human, as just a junky. we see it every day.

So that person has a pretty familiar relationshp with suffering. When he has nothing to smile about and you know his situation and you know it isn't anything good AT ALL...but you catch him in moment where he can smile? Genuinely just detaching from the weight of the hostile world and just be a human being for a single second with a moment of joy? It can be a moving and beautiful thing.

It almost doesn't matter where the joy is coming from, you are just glad that person can have it, if only for a moment. Catching them with their guard down, the frown is gone, maybe even the pain for a minute or two, while he's laughing.

Genesis – Aisle Of Plenty Lyrics 9 years ago
see the deadly nightshade grow. night shade is belladonna atropa, bella donna is 'beautiful woman maturing'. see the belladona grow, seeing her become "hip to the game". It's a story that began with the first song of the album 'Selling England by the Pound" where the woman is with her soldier boyfriend who is swearing his love to his romantic lover, assuming they will making love "for her merchandise...he traded in his prize" and then later on in the song Cinema show, the woman is meeting her beau for a movie. She has innocent thoughts on her mind of making her bed before leaving for her date, while her boyfriend's thoughts are about making his bed with her. This song is "the woman" after her date immediately saying "I don't belong here."

Where is she? What is this safe way home? Why is she getting a fare discount? What is she cooperating with? Yes we know the grocery store puns, but this is another kind of "market" being hinted at. Peter and company have once again hidden a dark story beneath the many layers of their lyrical and musical art. This woman is learning the rules of commerce, the selling of england, the coarse exchange of something for something, hopes and dreams for continued existence, underlined by the vague but unmistakable feeling of doom and degradation. The difference and the relationship between man and woman, and the inequalities and sorrows of both sides.

The Dears – There Goes My Outfit Lyrics 10 years ago
ah, it's also possible that the first half is the betrayer approaching the betrayed, and the second half is the betrayed getting upset at his former friend trying to make amends. grabbing him by the lapel and telling him what he thinks of him. While the betrayer is saying 'this is my current life', the abandoned friend is saying, in contrast, there goes my former life, like perhaps a mirroring situation. Cut off from the people he trusted, abandoned and undefended by his truest friend, left to be abused and bloodied. It seems to me to be a song about a break up, but between former comrades.

The Dears – There Goes My Outfit Lyrics 10 years ago
to me this song isn't about a romantic relationship, so much as a tight bond that was ruined when someone was betrayed and abandoned, and this is the confrontation as a result. there goes my outfit is like military jargon, there's my new social group or unit, like both people have moved on but one person had come face to face with their former friend and is asking "why didn't you speak up, why didn't you help me?!" clearly there was some expectation of support, and none was given, and it's split these two apart.

I think the first half is them meeting again, and the speaker is beating around the bush, and the approached asks "ok what is it?" which is where you get the 'alright, you've got me, no small talk, had a speech ready, but lets get down to it.' They do a little catching up, and then he lays it out there "You left me there and didn't stand by me and it broke my heart." He doesn't even demand an apology or an explanation, he just wants his friend to admit what happened, and then he's going to go off to his new life with his new 'outfit' of friends.

Genesis – Squonk Lyrics 10 years ago
I think that this album does have a few statements done in an artistic way that refer to their split from Gabriel. The way that their songs split into arguably different songs but aren't really mentioned, you might even say that Mad Man Moon is pointing directly to the Moonlight Knight, and Squonk is pointing directly at Porcupine Heart. Squonks aren't particularly furry, but Phil Collins is suddenly being asked to make noises that his "little furry friend would make". And the song at the end of Entangled, the mournful sighing almost crying instrumental sounds like the squonk crying. I mean this could be somebody's way of saying something without saying something. It leads directly into the tale of a little creature who felt so much self-pity at it's situation in life that it led to it's own demise.

Keep in mind that this album was all before Gabriel's first solo album release, and his professional track had been uncertain in music, and he had already not had much success with his testing of Hollywood and theatre. So he had left the band to do what? Follow his melancholy dreams and hopefully become inspired again, find his direction in life? Well Banks and Rutherford certainly felt that the little group they had built with Gabriel was a great direction, and suddenly Peter felt like there was nothing more left in it for him? They felt left in the lurch, perhaps a bit betrayed, and while on some level they understood and respected his decision, on another level they had issues with it. And I think some of those issues made it into this album. --And poor Phil in the middle, says his goodbyes at the end of Los Endos.

We know that there was some resentment in Peter leaving the boys and tension around the Lamb era preceding Gabriel's exit. I mean I'm sure they could understand his leaving, but probably felt a little left at a disadvantage because of it. I think they probably felt Peter was being a little self-indulgent in his feelings about his later time with the group, his moment of personal and artistic crisis, and would have wanted him to "man up" and "power through it" for the sake of the band, and stay, instead of the philosophical route and the transformation he went through when he left.

Genesis – Mad Man Moon Lyrics 10 years ago
I can't help but see this as a message from Banks to Gabriel.
Lots of metaphors about people leaving behind their realities for dreams, pretending to fly when you have no wings, falling to earth from heaven and becoming trapped and changed, regrets and disconnection. And not realizing that everyone wants something different from what they have, and how one man's desire can be another's prison.

Then again I tend to think the song that immediately precedes this one "Squonk" also had portions addressed to Peter.

Genesis – No Reply At All Lyrics 10 years ago
It's someone who is trying to get this woman's attention and she's giving him absolutely nothing. And he's teeter-tottering on the brink of getting the message that she's really not interested. And he's coming to the conclusion that the real issue is his desperation and feelings about himself, and it isn't so much about her at all. He just wants someone, anyone to respond.

I get the feelin' you're tryin' to tell me;
Is there somethin' that I should know?
What excuse are you tryin' to sell me?
Should I be readin' stop or go?

Maybe deep down inside,
I'm tryin' for no one else but me,
Too stubborn to say, "The buck stops here.
I'm not the one you're lookin' for."

But maybe deep down inside, I'm lyin'
To no one else but me.
Oh, but my back is up. I'm on my guard
With all the exits sealed.

Kurt Vile – Never Run Away Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about music. Or less specifically, good vibes, good bud, and the ability to listen to good music and to be made to feel good because of it. This is something that can always be relied upon in a world where you can't even trust the ground you walk on to not slip out from under you. But music, this queen of the heart and soul will never run out on you or screw you over. Music is never dishonest, people might be dishonest, musicians and artists might be dishonest, music producers are definitely dishonest, but music is always true.

also the lyric my steady guide on how to love is actually "my steady diet of 'high on love'".

Genesis – The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics 10 years ago
childhood, as if some kind of observation of innocence, an infant. then the idea of conception sperm heading toward an egg, then the comparison to all of us, the puny masses, the fleas. our motivations that we don't understand, we just go to where we're called. we don't even know where we're going. and that's life. if we came from somewhere else...we came here...and we go somewhere, and the thought is that there's a point to it. perhaps a reason we put ourselves through this life that the poor and holy are barred from participating in because they don't have what we have...a requirement to be tested by this life and all if offers which can be the truth, or a distraction all based on our motivation. do we heed the call or do we see things for what they are? We have to live this life, we have to play this game. We have to get in, to get out. And our expectation, heaven all of that, still a misunderstanding just like every other thing we think motivates us, as we are just innocent stupid miniscule things, life trying to live, just like any other life. Just like we watch the crawlers..we are the crawlers, there's always a larger scale that looks down upon us just as we do these carpet crawlers. There's a parallel between us all, and even God, or whatever there is, is linked to us by this on some relative level. The human condition is the condition of existence and all things that exist suffer through something. The strong are weak to something, the wise and the naive alike both have something they dont know or don't know they don't have. And do we even want to go up the corridor? There is something more there, but all we know is at the first step, to go above is to leave behind all we know, and how lonely it must be...

Electric Light Orchestra – Telephone Line Lyrics 11 years ago
I feel like this one is an existential song. Like how these artists are always giving voice to not only thoughts but feelings in their lyrics. They will be talking about a relationship in one verse, and the next they're addressing the real questions and wonders not only of the individual, but of humanity itself. This song seems like it's about someone trying to reconnect with an old flame, then it becomes a song about loss, and about loneliness and life itself, and the living of life. The speaker seems to say to hold on to the things we have and the things we had, and don't give up hope for more to come in the future.

I've seen people bring God into the equation, to say that the voice is God trying to connect to us. But it could even be us, the human spirit trying to connect to the divine, or the Universe, to no longer be so alone in our humanity, in our existence. And the same might be said for God, or an isolated divine that maybe created life simply because it was alone in the Universe. And these two things are forever to try to reach, if it takes eternity but we won't hang up the phone because we know something is on the other end.

I have this pet theory, as above, so below, our connections and relationships are analogous to the phenomena and characteristics of the cosmos. So the connection between two people is analogous to the connection between particles or forces, or two divines. I think this song speaks about that nature, and our basic questions about ourselves and reality itself. Living in twilight is to not know, and to not be able to move on. Stuck between day and night.

Death from Above 1979 – Black History Month Lyrics 11 years ago
it's all about perspective. black history could mean a really dark period of history, like a dark age of the mind, where people lie to themselves and keep themselves wilfully ignorant just to survive. Sort of like the 1950s. Black doesn't have to mean African American.

Then again, if this song is about white flight, its probably talking about how the subjects of the song fool themselves into thinking what they were trying to protect was so precious, but they can barely remember it for what it was, it was song long ago, and they've been running ever since. They harken back to a time where you could build and try new things and there was order and progress. But they left all of that behind, all of the things important to them, because they themselves were fundamentally flawed.

So the song would blame the fliers for freaking out and destroying everything.

Broken Social Scene – Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the song is about two best friends. Teenage or tweenage girls who are growing up, but one is growing away from the other. One wants to enjoy the moment and the other wants to embrace change and the future, young womanhood, different from the tomboyish ways of her youth. New clothes, new friends, her own car, more outgoing social life. And there's that sense of betrayal, or there's actual betrayal at least in the sense of leaving something that was a part of you behind, the things people do to force a separation. The betrayal of self, the betrayal of others, going separate ways and not going back. Life. Damn that's a beautiful song. The different overlaying perspectives.

That's why I feel like the last bit is sort of the one girls curse or wish towards the other girl. To at least feel missed.

interesting. There is definitely an Adam and Eve vibe in there. And Originally there was God and Adam and then Eve, and then the fall cause Adam and Eve to be thrown out of Heaven, so then there's just three. And of course the underlying theme of a couple and an unborn child and then they lose the child, who goes with(cum)the angels. Lyrical twisting and all that. This is a great song.

Los Campesinos! – Death to Los Campesinos! Lyrics 13 years ago
I feel like the song is like your standard duet songs, singing about a relationship. This particular relationship is..i feel like it's a song about modern relationships where people communicate online, via emails and facebook and videos, etc. Busy people unable to get a lot of face time together, due to school or work or distance. And they're seeing each other as people but so many of the personal details are invented or assumed or lost in the translation from digital to real life and they find themselves filling in the blanks so they can both be happy. Unable to get perfect love, they settle for 'love in a controlled environment'. And when she's communicating with this "person" she made out of bits and pieces, she's being reminded that he actually IS a real person on the other end, so, and the unintended output she's getting from the exchange is frustrating so she'd be better off with Artificial Intelligence, something predictable or controllable.

And the 'hand in the till' bit is him saying, if you see me doing something that makes you unhappy or it seems like I am trying to take advantage, just remember that I'm only human, imperfect, and almost doing what I'm supposed to do in that imperfection, by being selfish. and it's the best I can do right now because I'm limited in a way by my human feelings and needs. I don't really mean to upset you, I'm just trying to work things out and do the best I can with all these feelings and human failings.

And then he's saying 'I am what I am, what if I can't change?' And she says 'You can't fool me by changing superficially. I see you for what you are and maybe you actually kind of suck.' And then he says that he's shutting off his feelings a bit so he doesn't get hurt, and he's also closing the chat window. And she says she'll burn his computer down. Singing "I'm not finished! I'm not finished!" And then the line that takes it back, that the only things that can be hurt are just feelings, and that many "real" relationships are still only like a simulation of love. A game that both people play.

Of course, not included in the song is the part where he sends her a lolcats picture then they kiss and make up.

Gosh it's like geeks in love, it's so cute.

The Wallflowers – Three Marlenas Lyrics 13 years ago
Yeah I get the impression that we're talking about 3 different women named Marlena, which is a pretty common hispanic name. Or alternately it could be 3 different aspects of the same woman. Each case seems different though. One is self sufficient, but doesn't have love. One has love but isn't self sufficient. One is about to buy a car and get outta town, she has means but has nothing worth sticking around for. Just different situations in life, and not one is necessarily better than another, just different. I love the song.

Empire of the Sun – We Are the People Lyrics 14 years ago
Just lots of old meso-american mythological references. The natives didn't fear death or see it as the ultimate punishment or the dreaded fate or the end of all things, that's it party over, world of suck, no. They saw it as just another part of life, funny enough. Just the other side, and all things have an "other" side.

Although the lyrics' meaning could have something to do with soulmates, the video goes even deeper, for a meaning of its own, I think.

I keep thinking Nick and Luke are both supposed to be different sides of the same person. Or they're spiritual travelers or something. When they meet the woman (is this death?), then they use their powers(water is life) transforming the moment into that oasis. Plus dig that cool "gash" across Nick's midsection. This video is so full of imagery and symbols it's my favorite.

Empire of the Sun – We Are the People Lyrics 14 years ago
Here's my conspiracy theory. ...Nick actually DID leave Luke. (Well they say he's off with his other band PNAU working on a new album) And Luke is having to carry on all the tour dates on his lonesome. And in the last few videos they have only had Luke in them. But what good is an emperor prince without his shogun general? Luke is like the mystic or the wizard and Nick is like the warrior, or the roles they seem to take on in the videos, one is like the sun\fire spirit and the other is like the moon\water.

Anyway, I hope they do get back together to make more really amazing music. I hope Nick doesn't think he was playing second fiddle to the boy in blue.

The Walkmen – The Rat Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a song about collection or payback. I don't see the love connotations, i see a score about to be settled. Someone who was really close to him betrayed him and really hung him out to dry. He somehow lets it slide or lets it sit, and then this rat comes back presuming a favor, talking about old friendships. And now our hero is going to let him have it.

Stars – Celebration Guns Lyrics 14 years ago
Yeah if I recall, after we started bombing the Taliban people were celebrating in the streets, shooting guns and dancing, because most people hated the Taliban anyway. And then they put out the bounties for anyone affiliated with Terrorism. Which led to anyone with a grudge selling their enemies out for cold hard American dollares. People who may or may not have had anything to do with terrorism or insurgency, were captured and put in chains. They made the wrong enemies at some point, and that earned them a one way ticket to secret American prison.

So I think the first part is mirroring, both sides have a history, but the American history is probably the one most worthy of shame. Both had a desire to win, but only the US's desire could be considered perverse because the big superpower is picking on a poor 3rd world nation bombing guilty and innocent alike, instead of killing all the bad guys and leaving.

The rest is pretty self explanatory I guess.

Beirut – Nantes Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is about a relationship in decline. He is noticing her unhappiness with the relationship, something she wants that she's not getting. Maybe they're not moving to that next level, whatever that is. She always seems to have an attitude and always seems more willing to fight over something than she is willing to kiss and make up. He's saying he'll spend more time trying to figure it out even though the way she's being in the relationship lately makes him afraid for the future. (Or maybe the 'gamble away the fright' means he'll spend more time 'avoiding the subject' until his fear of marriage/death goes away) I mean who wants to spend the rest of their life with angry Miss Hot-n-Cold anyway? So he's saying he'll give it another year to see, or else it will slide into the sea. Either way, it's another night in paradise with his lover, and it'll all work out either way, but its all still so bittersweet.

I love the live version of this on LA BLOGOTHEQUE. Plus the violinist girl is way cute.

The Welcome Wagon – Sold! To the Nice Rich Man Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the rich man is supposed to be God, and the second rich man is Jesus. And him buying the world is him coming in to announce his existence and the existence of the heavens and his plans for us (10 Commandments and all), and of course we run afoul of those Old Testament style plans because we're human and not perfect; we disobey, and so there goes the ark, here comes the dark... And then the one who comes and is full of life and twice as nice is New Testament God and Jesus who pays the price and all that self loathing and guilt type stuff we do. And since the price is paid, we should no longer worry and just be chill. I think the song is an interesting way to look at God and christianity. Like God doesn't have to even be here in this part of the universe, but the fact that he is here must mean something.

Yeasayer – Ambling Alp Lyrics 14 years ago
nice catch. yeah i googled amblin alp because i had this image of a giant man mountain like buddha wandering around spreading a message of peace and standing up to adversity. Then I found out it was old time boxing legend, Primo's nickname. Then I read Schmelling in the lyrics and it clicked. He was the Nazi's olympic superman, so the song had to be about the legend of the Brown Bomber. I'm not sure hipsters are exactly well known for their sense of history, though. Sense of retro maybe. Not the same thing.

Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 14 years ago
cum is a latin word that means 'with', combined, or 'in addition to'. the sexual term is in the vulgar, which occurs often enough in songs, but this time he meant it in the original latin. baby-cum-angels means a baby\angel, a baby who died and is now also an angel.

if you cut a tree open, that dark stuff it drips is called pitch. also known as sap, or turpentine crude, depending on what tree you use. i think that part does refer to a primordial early state where feelings were raw and primal.

When I consider it, the first line could be describing the current mode of mankind. What's the one thing humans really excel at without trying? Or even when we try really hard not to, we're still really good at ruining things and fucking people over and helping things fall apart, just by being our obnoxious selves. It could be considered the human art, because look at us and nature, and each other, and everything else. We have the reverse midas touch sometimes cause we're imperfect and stupid.

And then of course analogies of 'as above, so below', and the 'magnitude of ten' idea where our bodies are little planets for the little creatures inside of us, and our planet is a giant planetary body that lives in the galaxy, swimming around the universe, etc. It's a nice multilayered song that does the whole adam and eve thing, then gets existential and maybe a little atheistic.

my question is, his boss. was his boss trying to find a place where God can't watch? Or was the boss actually God, quiting the job to find a blind spot where he can't see?

MGMT – Weekend Wars Lyrics 15 years ago
i think this song is about how they in the song went from our "civilized" existence, to a post-civilization anti-apocalyptic one. At least that's the kind of imagery they use. Moving things to a more simple time, which could be a double edged blade. They can shoot their guns to kill their lunch, but they can't use computers anymore. It is about relationships, like the familial breakdown between man and woman, and the societal breakdown between civilization and humanity. How not caring about the status quo, and just wanting everything to change, by any and all means, caused it all to fall apart. And how our current lifestyles, revolve around 'weekend wars'. Searching for fun, entertainment, relevance, and even love and could be compared to something a little more savage like a warrior raiding party. How we're living is somehow wrong, and the friction between the factions can only lead to Or maybe it refers to the ideas of the so called 'Culture War'.

The meanings reverberate between the different themes. So it is about relationships. Mothers and Fathers. Humanity and Civilization. Present and Future. Apathy and Action. Faders and Maders is a play on words, fathers and mothers. Every mess invested could refer to bad economic deals made on purpose.

I like how each stanza drips with meaning and metaphor. and i won't try to fight in the weekend wars.

Jason Mraz – Wordplay Lyrics 15 years ago
i agree with lizze627 - i think its all him mocking the corporate experience of going from a musician and an artist and becoming a money making product, or to be categorized. To have your life's work and your talent be simplified as, 'the pop sensation who is good with clever word play, and clear, quick flowing lyrics.' Something he would have to go through, to become commercialized in order to have that music company support. About being forced, in his eyes, to 'sell out' his art, I this is his lampshaded response.

Remember kids, corporations aren't fans of music, they're fans of money.

i like the drums. no, i mean i *really* like them. I wouldn't like the song as much without them. To me the different music styles mesh together in a melange of contemporary meets traditional. Which seems to resemble the meaning of the song and it's inspiration, a man's personality, made up of many different traits, different styles, choosing his own identity. The man in the song, the gay community, and the city of New York itself. "Be yourself, no matter what they say."

Bassy drums != Ignorance, thenk you veddy much.

Eels – Manchild Lyrics 16 years ago
To me it sounds like he's with someone with Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD. Its kinda like a mix between manic depression and schizophrenia, however that's spelled. It's about a guy who tries to be absolutely perfect to his girl, but no matter what he does she keeps sinking down into the abyss.

When she needs him, he's there. If she wants something, he gives it to her. When she's sad he tries to make her happy, but no matter what he does, he can't fill up the empty void inside of her. And it's killing him. Then there come the times when she's selfish and she just drops him. Treats him like he's trash, or ignores him like he doesn't exist. This is what is called a BPD personality split, where someone who adores you suddenly *totally* hates you, because of an emotional whim, or some thing you did that upset her. They're usually temporary, but generally always reoccuring. People in relationships like this learn to deal with it, but they're slowly worn down. BPD has no cure, and millions that have it don't even know it exists as a known disorder.

It sounds like the guy understands what she's going through, and knows there's only so much he can do to help. And he doesn't even really blame her when she treats him badly. He just for once wishes that *she* could hold *him* and tell him that everything is going to be ok. That he could rely on her for once, instead of him always being the rock to support her and to make everything ok for her.

This song brings back some real memories of days gone by. I remember when I first heard it.

best comment so far "Most people were born after this song was written! So all you ppl complaining about Donnie Darko, need to shut up!!!1" Ok, I'm parphrasing, but that shit made me almost piss my pants. Oh you young people...*sigh*

This song always gets to me. I think that librarian helped start me on my thing for geeky women. And really, who can not relate to this song? if you've ever been truly, head swimmingly in love, and knowing better that you oughtn't be. But you just go with it, hoping for the best. It's a nice ride no matter how it ends, at any rate. Even if things don't turn out for the best, you still felt awesome, if even for a few moments. You know, some people pay a lot for expensive and illegal drugs just to feel like that.

He wants to connect with this girl, who is still too caught up in her inner-childishness. When he tries to get serious, she pushes him away, but she also teases him with her 'system of touch'. Not necessarily sex, but she lets him know that she's definitely interested, at least a little bit. She's a wealth of mixed signals and frustration, but she's also fun, and he Loves her. He's got direction in his life, and it seems she's willing to go with the flow, where ever it takes her. So, does he put things on hold, change the direction of his life, and see where things end up? Again, she makes him feel sooooo...willing to try. Sounds like she's a pain in the ass, but the lovable sort. He's a fool to give her his heart, but what better description for a man in love? "Love makes fools of us all." I guess that's shakespeare.

Plus that dude at the beginning of the video? Totally from outer space. "You don't know me..I know you father. He wanted me to give you this..." Then he vanishes and all we see are the stars? Freaked me out as a kid, this video did.

I wondered what different interpretations i might find, were I to check this site. Some interesting ones yes, especially the last one. But if you saw the video, you'd see the meaning was clear. They borrowed footage from a Hollywood film to give the video a more sci-fi edge. Men in space suits, holograms, computer graphics, etc, and then at the end the kid teleports in to nothing like "beam me up scotty"

The song is pretty straightforward. Its a warning to this guy's family to prepare themselves and protect themselves from some kind of Invasion. Remember that this WAS the 80s, time of the Ruskie Menace as well as Ronald Reagan's creepy speech about hypothetical threats, "not of this world". So there are a mix of influences and images in this song. It's not very anti-Communist at all, and this was a British rock band keep in mind. Keep your heads down, pretend to follow along, teach the children to remember Freedom, don't trust the government, and most of all stay alive for the future.

This song, mixed with the crazy, UFOs, men from outer space theme of the video would make a helluva good movie. Anyway, if space aliens were about to take over the planet, wouldn't this be sound advice from your father who's with the High Command? Dead, or fighting in space, whichever.

Back in the 80s, music videos had everything to do with the song. Music videos were still new, and they were supposed to be a visualization of the music. Where today, video directors think that's much too easy, and try to be more "artistic" and "subtle".

oh yar, me forgot. "You're working for the police and the private, the pilots and the pirates.." The authority figures, and the private citizens. The best of society's achievers, and the dregs just trying to survive. And they all have to pay up to someone.

keep one eye on the door, keep one eye on the bag. priceless advice. Never expect to be sure who it is you're working for.

Its like, you have to protect yourself, and your assets. Cover your ass because it's the only thing you can be sure of. You can never know who's agenda you're truly working for. Your own, someone else's, something you might not have even considered, ten levels above where your mind is. The pawn usually doesn't only think of himself as a gamepiece. And everyone is somebody else's pawn. Everyone is using someone else. And it's entirely possible that *everyone* is using *you*.

The system, the user, the victim, the abuser, the helper, and the bystander on the train. They all want a piece, no one will sign the lease, and all scatter when time comes to take the blame. Definitely some drug deal imagery here. Is it a deal? Is it a sting? Are you being set up, or are you being used to set someone else up? Or are you just helping someone have a good time and forget? Or are you helping a fool part from his money? Bag\Bed. More imagery, are the cops going to bust in? Is the customer you're helping out\using going to turn on you? Is it all really about escape? Sex and drugs and police surveillance? Yes. Well, maybe.

Lord listen lover we are all missing something I don't got. In the end, we're all empty, and no one can help us there with that void because they have it too. The singer wants out, and the world wants in.

Lord lord mother we are all losing love. Lord listen lover we are all missing mama. That line stands on it's own.

Not sure about the last line..but pretty sure she's not trying to hurry to the orphan's home so she can get wee Oliver his dope.

The Cure – Close to Me Lyrics 16 years ago
he's eavesdropping, and listening in on the girl that he adores obsessively, i think. he's either fantasizing, or lost in anticipation for what is going to happen that night. Either way, he closes his eyes, holds his breath and.. oh yeah if you are now 'here', i suppose it means that you've come?

At any rate, he sounds half miserable, wishing to stay asleep, so i'm not sure if he's with the object of his obsession or not. Or maybe he's just extremely nervous.

Pretty sure this song is about sex, or wanking.

No Doubt – Running Lyrics 16 years ago
i think it IS a sad song. Or atleast contains some intended sadness. I mean the muscians had to be aware that the nostalgic 8 bit nintendo-esque music sounded bittersweet.

And the lyrics? Don't let me fall out of love? Don't make me want to give up? I think they're helluva hopeful, but also realizing that with all the running, sooner or later someone is going to fall out of breath. If it was totally happy, these things wouldnt even cross the person's mind, right? And what are they running from? Time and inevitability. Hell..we all fall out of love, or atleast it's not as intense as the first week, even if it is true love and it is forever. I think this song addresses those feelings. You can't run forever, but you CAN run as hard as you can, for as long as you can, if you really mean it.

Anyway, great song. LOVE the intro. Reminds me of innocence and love and nostalgia for the younger days. Of course..i am of the 8bit generation.

George Michael – Fastlove Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is pretty funky. It made me think twice about ol' boy, George. Funkier than I would have thought he was capable of. Its pretty straightforward. Some people don't want to chat about the weather, or what's on tv, or what they did at work. Some people just want to look someone else in the eye and know that they're wanted and accepted.

Of course part of this song is about how we fill our emotional void with physical experiences. And thats a defense mechanism, and sometimes it's not all bad. Sometimes it's the medicine you need. Don't cry about the girl you loved who dumped you for no reason. Go have a fling with one who likes you, don't complicate things unless the need to be. Get yourself a lesson in love. I can dig it.

inlieu..i'm not sure G. Mikey is exactly the marrying type.. ;)*snurkle*

Taking Back Sunday – A Decade Under The Influence Lyrics 16 years ago
its about a relationship with someone you know is bad for you. Someone you don't have a connection with anymore. Someone who really only shows you the parts of them that you like when you're showing the parts of you that you don't like. And you're wondering why you're even with them. You're looking at them and all you see is an echo of the past, or the distance between you. You see the other person, and its like a delicate thing you can't touch. Like a porcelain doll, or a mirage. Not someone you can be with or interact with. The voice of the song speaks from familiarity, but also talks about the total breakdown of the connection, and all that remains are bad feelings and the knowledge that no good came, or will come from the association. But you do it anyway.

But to hear its about a long drive with your ex-gf to see some shitty concert in a shitty town for a shitty night out for all involved? I guess I could totally see how that could be the inspiration for this despair laden emopunk tune. me rikey. i got it baaaaad.

Elvis Costello – Radio Radio Lyrics 16 years ago
yeah this song is about the BBC specifically, back when the UK was run by a very socially conservative government. But the meta message is when power uses media to control thought and opinion, when it dictates what "proper thought" is, and uses media to reinforce it, to control people, its wrong. Wrong on a level of being unholy, alienating people who don't think what the government thinks they should. Turning people against each other because they all trust the hand that feeds. Calling it treason. Whatever you want to call it, the system, civilization, the hand that feeds, Elvis is railing against it. The BBC, and also the way of living that man has developed that relies on controlling another man. Or if you need a visual, dulling our humanity so they can build their castles made of men.

Elvis Costello – Watching the Detectives Lyrics 16 years ago
oh yeh, i forgot

the wife is flashing back to when she spied on them at the motel. When she decided to do it, kill the girl. The flashing vacancy light, maybe imagining the girl taking her clothes off, imagining how her husband lies with her. Or perhaps, being an enterprising lady, she actually saw the whole thing. She's muttering to her self 'I don't know how much more of this i can take.'

very good song. definately inspired by cop shows. The question is, is elvis watching a cop show and describing it? or is it like him telling a story of a jilted lover? one of his signature notes? the unique changes of perspective, it kind of goes in and out like a moebius. Its his story about a story within a story. ok i've gone too deep. i like it. great song.

Elvis Costello – Watching the Detectives Lyrics 16 years ago
angry wife kills cheating hubby's young (underage?) mistress. frames hubby for the murder. the cops interrogate him till he bleeds (heh-heh) and the wife is the only one who knows where the body is. He cries and cries, because he has no idea, but she thinks it's just desserts.

the detectives coming to check if this victim's description matches another missing persons case, the parents' lost little girl.

the wife is watching all of this, and is lauging to herself, because its just like the detective shows on TV, where she learned how not to get caught. It only took her little fingers to put her cheating husband out of her life forever, and get the ultimate revenge. Probably a divorce and all his stuff.

So..wot ya think?

Superdrag – Nothing Good Is Real Lyrics 17 years ago
awesome. effing. song.
he doesn't believe anything good is truly real. And if it is, it never lasts, so was it even real anyway or just a dream? a break from reality? he doesn't trust or love anyone easily, and people always disappoint him(in other words, he always disappoints himself), but with this girl he hopes he is wrong. He prays. "Allow me to confess.."

Nothing good is real. Because if it was it would last. It wouldn't disappear at the first sign of trouble.

He breaks relationships by getting weird. he changes in a little way, barely noticable, like something in him just goes away, just for a second, and the good thing he had becomes sabotaged forever. And it falls apart *fast*.

he's in love with this girl. but he knows how it'll end. but if she would only come to him. maybe he could learn to hope.

isn't it scary how these songs describe our lives so well?

Superdrag – Sucked Out Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about the record business. How it was their big dream to make it, and how reality just kinda sucked it all out of them like a drag on a cigarette. They were discovered and given a record deal, and for all their hard work, and the fact that the dream really did come true, the company and the fans have gotten their rocks off, and have moved on to the next artist, the next new sound. Like a new bride who has been deflowered, the wedding's over and this is the rest of your life. So they're talking about the casual music fan, and the fickle company man who only cares about the dollar. '45 minutes a side' i think refers to old fashioned wax or vinyl LPs. He's kind of waking up from the dream, wondering what the heck happened. Who sucked out the feeling?
