90% heartbreaking and the other 10%? All mirror.

Sonic Youth – Massage The History Lyrics 14 years ago
This is another of SY winding beautidful meandering songs. Tangibly bittersweet. As old and numb as i've become with age, they've always been able to bring me back to that time when i could feel the dull ache of pure emotion (maybe angst?) right in the pit of my stomach.

Thank you SY. for reminding me.

Morrissey – Cosmic Dancer Lyrics 14 years ago
Wonderful falsetto emenatting from my man, "the Mozer".

Together with the crowd howling in the background and the spare acoustic accompaniment this song is a haunting keeper.

Ben Harper – God Fearing Man Lyrics 14 years ago
AMAZING SONG.

What i also find compelling is that there isn't a hint of fear to be found in this song. Quite the oppositer relly a more secure fellow, you'd be hard pressed to find. But maybe thats just it. he fears none other than god.
(I feel compelled to mention that I'm very agnostic and in fact feel that the spirituality of the song is more about sens eof self than supreme beings)

RJD2 – Smoke And Mirrors Lyrics 14 years ago
I love love this song. THe only thing? its seems like a lamentation. A defiant one, but a lamentation nonetheless. and so this song always makes me feel introspective. Ahh the rich bittersweetness of it all.

Descendents – Pep Talk Lyrics 14 years ago
yeah but where are the comments about how stellar this song is? especially the last stanza. Amazingly simple lyrics without being a simpleton. in fact, the entirety of ALL grows on you infectuously, but this song takes the cake.

Descendents – Cameage Lyrics 14 years ago
what a kICK ASS song!! where are all of the other comments?! The Descendents pretty much have a lock on the difiantly angry/wistful/love song.

Descendents – Silly Girl Lyrics 14 years ago
Gotta rep for 2010. This is, of course, a classic. I din't even get a chance to catch on to the Descendents until the ALLalbum or soo. and believe you me, there weren't any other black folk at the concert. Folks don't know what they're missing.

A sad sad poignant song. But some how i always feel good about it.

Seriously...ok I'm off to give it a listen this very instant..

Hayden – Holster Lyrics 14 years ago
What!! Not one SINGLE comment for holster? It has to be one of the most heartbreaking perofmances I've heard! Please give it a listen and be prepared when Hayden lays that harmonica on ya. Dripping with ernest pain. Unblinking misplaced faith. But underneath abrave front- the clear understanding that the battle has long been lost...

Morrissey – Life Is A Pigsty Lyrics 14 years ago
Im forced to concur with so many here. Especially xdarkentries and girl least likely.

How does morrisey consistently thread this fine needle? Humour, and pain. When I'm not amused and deeply feeling every inch of this sone lines like " shoot me or throw me off a train" are so dramatic i cant help but feel a twinge of empathetic pain...and yet i can't help but giggle a bit too!

And when i'm happy he can still bring me back to this drafty damp place, wandering shells of building, mourning some imagined lost love. A true artist writer and performer every inch.. Thanks Moz. I hear you voice in my head and think of you kindly.

Morrissey – Southpaw Lyrics 14 years ago
Just adding a STRONG note of agreement with djnee.

Not about being bullied, you see, but yes the end of this song is absolutely beyond reproach! it's like floating along in a storm cloud roilng and peaceful at once.

Fishbone – Sunless Saturday Lyrics 14 years ago
Amazing amazing amazing song. I have to say that inspite of the lyrics or rather because of them and their seeming incongruence with that driving beat and fearless guitars straining at the leash.... i always feel empowered after hearing this song. Like i've been girding for battle. and i won't stop until the truth is seen by each and every eye!

Modest Mouse – You're the Good Things Lyrics 14 years ago
One thing that seems to have gone unreferenced in theses commentaries is tone. I can see how some folks could interpret this as some paean to an enduring love...BUT the tone is LOADED with sarcasm. and the Juxtapostions are just as sardonic.

You're the good things(sung sweetly) YEAH THATS YOU YEAH THATS YOU YEAH (abrasively as in My cousin Vinny's "YEAH! YOU BLEND")

You're the flowers (sweet) IN MY HOUSE WHEN MY ALLERGIES COME OUT!

Youre' the icing..(aww icing "literally sweet) ON MY CAKE ON THE TABLE AT MY WAKE

is there anything actually good here? Seems like he's discovered she has the "artifice" of good but ultimatly is really no good for hom at all. What more does the man have to say? Does he have to telegraph it like Triumph the insult comment dog? You're great you're just wonderful....For me to poop on!!

Grateful Dead – Eyes Of The World Lyrics 14 years ago
Personally i love the 14 min Great American Music Hall version. August 13th 1975.

This is also the song that turned me into a deadhead. As someone born and raised in the hood on R&B and Hip Hop, no small task. :)
But of course this song also typifies one of the key thing s i love about music. How it speaks to the soul. Especially when improvisation comes into play when they're just jammin'. So maybe not such a huge leap for me to go from Jazz- to hip hop - to saSonic Youth (masters of the Jam and improv themselves) to The Dead etc etc.

This song is instant energy boost, chicken soup for the soul, Popeye's shot of spinach in the nick of time. Once in college i saw a stranger on campus looking particularly bummed. I handed my walkmen to him (dating myself here, Im 33 now) and he was shocked to discover that it was playing the Dead... and in particular the '75 American Music Hall version of Eyes. He was instantly cheered. We remain homies to this day....

The Police – Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic Lyrics 14 years ago
No one has mentioned the absolutley electric EYO-0! EYO-O! EYO-O! my favourite part I'd have to say.
I do think it someone he already knows. Beside the thousand rainy days thing i think the umbrella talk is impotant. Hell is directly tied into the rainy days... I think its just another example of how infatuated he is. They are friends theyve been together on thses rainy days, the umbrella is big enough but does she share? (NO!) and yet... Every little thing she does is magic!!

its akin to Shakespere's love sonnet where the object of his love has hair like wire and breath like onions...but he love her in spite of these things. Or maybe because of them too...the whole package "warts and all"

The Police – Darkness Lyrics 14 years ago
I also take issue with George's harsh asessment. (though we're each entitled to our repective opinions, thats why we're here)
I think the spare repetitive melody is supposed to be a sort of meditation. A lacrimose meditative song reminding me of places I've ofte n gone, lament when i've finaaly arrived, leave, and immediatley plot my return to. Life's cycle of want to want. The grass seems greener over there- isms.

Yeasayer – 2080 Lyrics 15 years ago
It's so odd that most folks refer to the music as hippie-like. In my mind this song is 90% African rythym. Especially that lilting guitar in the background. So much more so than the overhyped Vampire Weekend.

PJ Harvey – Hardly Wait Lyrics 15 years ago
You know i also could have sworn it was "Hey Romeo make my water break."
Not very hard to imagine with the Peejster. I'l have to listen to it again. "Make my world as great" doesn't have her usual poetic flow or passive/angry resonance. I remain doubtful as to it's veracity.

Tina Turner – We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) Lyrics 15 years ago
Surprised there arent more comments here, as i suppose most folks are ewwhenevr they happen upon a song near and dear to them. I always feel such pangs of nostaligia and hopefulness whenever i hear this song. It reminds me of a time when me capacity for frelling things deeply (like hope) was so much wider. No that I'm an "adult" and everything must be taken in stride in order to function i realize that there is a price to pay. that equanimity is a double edged sword. But this song along with a few others somehow tap into my the reserve behind my "reserve". Ill listen to this song at lunch today and walk around hopeful/purposeful for a bit.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Higher Hell Lyrics 15 years ago
Why couldn't this be about a relationship gone bad? My lower heaven "you" know so well. Forcing the words out of your stubborn mouth. Being misheard. Confronted by the spectre of continuing his present course...sounds a lot like a personal relationship he's mired in.

I know what folks often say about Lee at the mike. But " very 'I'm in a band'..... with kneepads." It is a rare thing to be so evocative w/ so little effort. Also i rather like Pipeline/Kill time and Hoarfrost. he produces those little phrases like gems- so easy to get hooked on. (hey Joni too)

Tom Vek – On the Road Lyrics 16 years ago
Well in one sense the singer becomes less and less an active partipant "on the road" (maybe a relatioonship or life metaphor?) First he is at least a taking an active interest in driving. Then merely giving left or right directions the simply the means which allow one to drive. The comes a schism. the handbrake. Stopping driving alltogether. (driving again maybe being life or a relationship). His last role is as a glove compartment closed off andd not an interactive component or enabler of driving at all.
Or so i gather.
