Bedsitter people - a classic UK reference.
A 'bedsit' or 'bed-sitting room' is effectively a one-roomed apartment in a larger house - just a bed, a table, a couple of chairs and a small stove and hotplate. Bathroom / toilet is down the hall and shared with any other occupants of the floor / house.
Normally rented by young singles, students and other similar lower socio-economic individuals.
On the whole, certainly not thoughtful, reflective people... |

Actually, that was FROM NY and back to London. There was, as far as I know, no probem with the Coca-Cola company, but the BBC's strict no-advertising policy meant that unless the lyrics were changed the song would get no air-play - there were no independent ad-supported radio stations in the UK then (except Luxembourg in the evening and Caroline, the pirate radio ship, neither of which were strictly speaking in the UK) so the chances were that the general public would never hear it without the change. |

"No Milk Today", In England, milk was delivered to the door in glass bottles and there was usually a regular order (Two pints please). The empty bottles were rinsed and left on the doorstep for the milkman to pick up with the next delivery. It wasn't unusual to leave a note in the top of a bottle for any variation ("one extra pint, please, we have company" or "No milk for the next week, we are away") "no milk today" was the most common, usually because for some reason the previous day's hadn't been used. Of course this matches in with the general thrust of the song. Only one person is living there now, the other has left, so not so much milk is being used, hence "No milk today, it seems a common sight But people passing by don't know the reason why"
And in case you're wondering, "just two up, two down" describes a small english terraced house with two main rooms on the ground floor and two bedrooms above. I was brought up in a 'three up, two down' terraced house.
So, the final meaning is that a couple were living together in a small, very working-class house, but their love made it a palace. But now she has left him and he is alone with only his memories. |

kmcook, as far as the lyrics are concerned, you're spot on, it is chopper. As for the meaning, it's a put-down of the decadent rich with more power then they deserve and nothing really worthwhile to occupy their time (probably living on daddy's money and/or fame). A few songs of the late sixties had a similar theme. One that springs to mind is 'Freedom Come, Freedom Go' - I can't remember who it's by, but some of the lyrics include 'Dady is a doctor, mother is a debutante, pillars of society living in a mansion somewhere in the country and another in Chelsea' and 'Freedom is her name and Freedom is her nature, Freedom is a sunny day - Freedom never does do what she doesn't want to, Freedom never has to pay' |

I saw them perform this live in Brighton back in 73 (or 74 - somewhere around then) during their Islands promotional tour. Fripp introduced it as a song about groupies - the Ladies of the Road of somewhat dubious morals that all bands came across |

Just an aside here - 'Knowledge is a deadly friend when no-one sets the rules. The fate of all mankind I see is in the hands of fools' - this song was written at the height of the cold war when nuclear attack was thought of as probable rather than just possible. |

Let's steer away from the drugs a minute - they're just too convenient. Instead, look at the mid to late sixties culture when there was a resurgence in interest in legend and the occult (yes, I lived through it near London) and take this as an unseen, unheard sprite (or something similar), probably a mischievous one (I won't touch you, but then I might) As for 'traveling by telephone, ever so high' the first communications satellites had been launched just prior to this, so it fits very well with the whole imagery.
The whole song brings to mind fairy stories, imps, goblins etc. |
