Soundgarden – Superunknown Lyrics 15 years ago
It's Cornell explaining what the album is about. Almost a warning that the ideas expressed in the album will make you look at yourself and the World differently. You may start to see things for what they are and not for what you have been told to see them as. You may actually start to think for yourself. At first it steals your mind. The more you think and analyze whats going on around you and stop taking everything at face value; your mind becomes open to different possibilities. You eventually begin to realize that most of the institutions, especially religion, that you have been taught to have faith in are really just a highly effective means of controlling you. I think Cornell is using the phrase steals your soul as a metaphor for losing your faith or religion. Once your mind is open you cannot go back to the simple blind faith way of life. When you begin to question and find that no one has the answers you really are alive in the Superunknown. It's so much easier to believe that you are on this earth for a simple purpose as it is laid out in the Bible. You know what to do, what not to do, when to do it, why your are doing it, and when the Lord say its time you know where you will end up. The Superunknown is like the exact opposite of this. If this isn't making sense, It doesn't make it lies.

Temple of the Dog – Wooden Jesus Lyrics 15 years ago
In response to xgames180: Rolling stones fans probably don't believe that Mick Jagger can rise from the dead, walk on water, turn blood to wine, make the blind see, shoot lighting bolts from his arse, and ultimately come back down to earth to pass judgment on all of man.

So to say that people of blind faith don't believe that religious paraphernalia may help them get into heaven is difficult to say. It’s not exactly comparing apples to apples. I think you may be overestimating the ability of people who were born to follow to see beyond the smoke and mirrors.

Chris Cornell – Mission Lyrics 16 years ago
Like it was said before this song was not written for a movie. I really think this song is about losing your virginity. Its writtin from the perspective of the person that is going to take someones virginity.

"And alight on your guarded heart
I'm gonna tear all our temples down"

Young girls are usually taught that thier body is a temple. They need to guard and protect thier temple. The first sexual experience is generally though to be an emotiional experience for a woman and more of a physical experience for a man. That would explain the womans guarded heart and the man knowing he would be tearing down her temple

"I'm going to dive through your crying and sleep in your hair
Rise from your ashes and kneel in your prayers
Tear all your temples down"

If you think of the song from that perspective you can see how the other lines fit. The crying, the calm, the release, the praying etc. Just my take on it though.

Temple of the Dog – Wooden Jesus Lyrics 17 years ago
In an interview right after Temple of the Dog released Cornell maid it apparent that the CD was a tribute to Wood, but each song was not about him or directed toward him. Reach Down and Say Hello 2 Heaven were both songs Cornell wrote after his death and were obviously about him. The rest were just songs that Cornell was working on and didn't really fit into anything that Soundgarden was doing. This was a perfect forum for Chris to put out a different kind of sound and album and still pay tribute to Andrew. That interview is on the internet somewhere, if I find the site I will post the url.

This song to me is in no way about addiction. To me its definitely about religious people who fill there homes with religious figurines and propaganda, because in some way they feel this will bode well for them in getting into heaven. Like it was said earlier, its also about the individuals who make millions selling simple people the idea that they can buy themselves into heaven. It pretty much sums up to me how ridiculous religion has become.
