The National – Start a War Lyrics 15 years ago
I gotta be the voice of dissent here.

It's definitely a relationship that is falling apart, but it sounds more like the singer is justifying his reasons to stay and try to keep things together. The whole "you were always weird but I never had to hold you by the edges like I do now" line seems to point to the other person creating a problem that he can't deal with and would walk away, lock up everything he has with the person (either physically in mementos of the relationship, or emotionally in the pain of the failing relationship with the memories of good times) and move on.

But he hold out hope that things will get better on his end, and if he does leave, the other person won't let him go quietly.

It's the Elvis Costello "I/you" jumble, but it doesn't sound like a threat, it sounds like resignation mixed with hope.

TV on the Radio – Tonight Lyrics 16 years ago
I've got a pretty broad view of this song.

I think it's not just about drugs or suicide, but both are a part of it.

It's almost like having a life changing night where someone who's used drugs to deal with the heartbreak in his life looks back on everything and has to ask whether it's worth going on living. Just going on hanging on to the past (the orchard of portraits) and thinking life is unrewarding and without value seems to be a waste, but going back to what gets him by is also a waste.

It's like this song is the voice of reason, either from a friend or in his own head that just says let go of the old shit, life sucks for everyone, but people keep going because they have each other.

Queens of the Stone Age – I Never Came Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm going to agree with flaretheinfrno.

There's a relationship that goes nowhere, the singer gets hurt and while thinking about how things went wrong and reliving the past. At some point he thinks of sex and remembers that they never got that close. So he never came.

It's not really dirty, it just is another part of a relationship that doesn't always get mentioned because people always overlook because of how people think that it's "dirty".

Peter Bjorn and John – The Chills Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a toss up between this and "Up against the wall" for my favorite PB&J song right now.

Best post break-up song ever. "Time don't heal it kills" is pretty much what the whole song boils down to.

Peter Bjorn and John – Up Against the Wall Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems to me that it is a story of a failing relationship, but the last verse is the aftermath of ending something that you think makes you miserable. Boy starts to resent girl (for having him "up against the wall"), and the feeling becomes mutual. The two hate each other and by the end of it he misses her and thinks "It’s almost that I wish you had me up against the wall".

Almost like saying that he'd take the worst just to have her again.

Elvis Costello – Big Sister's Clothes Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a political song about Maggie Thacher.

I can't explain it, but EC himself wrote it in response to the Falklands. The BBC version has it paired with "Stand Down Margret".

No argument about the meaning, but country road?

Even better to be in Manhattan at an ungodly hour and see these guys...

This one's off of "Run Devil Run". The video's a classic.

Warren Zevon – My Ride's Here Lyrics 17 years ago
Um, from what I understand this and "My Shit's Fucked Up" were both written after he found out he was dying.

"My Ride's Here" refers to the last ride, the one that takes us to the other side. There's no warning, no big production, just the fact that it happens to all of us.

There's a notion of acceptance and a certain submissive attitude that goes along with this tune. Accepting death isn't all that hard when you look at it with the somber romance in this song.
