Mates of State – Nice Things That Look Good Lyrics 17 years ago
"mary, kiss your hips, it doesn't mean you're loaded"

could this mean it's alright to appreciate yourself and to be proud of your body or your abilities without coming off as being presumptuous?
biblical reference?

Regina Spektor – The Flowers Lyrics 17 years ago
"The papers around me are piling and twisting; Regina, the paper back mummy"
the papers are burdens, are pains, are attempts for her to find words in the many volumes that can explain how she feels.
"I'm taking a knife to the books that I own and chopping and chopping and boiling soup from stone"
Regina is known for borrowing phrases and references from literature in her music. She is trying to cut pieces out of the piles of books around her that twist and consume her thoughts, like a mummy wrapped in confining bandages, and find the words to express her feelings- but it is a lot like boiling soup from stone, in that these words can't be manipulated to evoke the real physical pain of losing someone you love.

Regina Spektor – Genius Next Door Lyrics 17 years ago
DROWNING
"dreaming that the antidote is orgasm" - many believe that when a person drowns, they experience a euphoric sensation at the moment of death, comparable to an intense orgasm.

I believe maybe the lake had a reputation- the teenagers would go there to party, and dare eachother to hold their breath a long time underwater, hoping to achieve the fabled orgasm while still surviving to tell about it. Instead, many drowned- but this did not keep the kids from going back. They were foolish. Perhaps they joked that those young men who died had ejaculated in those waters... inspiring the humor in the consistency of the lake itself. The townspeople obviously did not find it appropriate to talk about what went down at the lake.
"The neighbours were trying to keep it quiet
But I swear that I could hear the laughter
So they joke, and they nicknamed it the porridge
Cause over night that lake had turned as thick as butter"

now the geek "genius" thought he'd try the theory out himself, without anyone knowing- he thought he was smarter than the drunk boys and would be sober enough to save himself, but he drowned alone in the lake, still hoping to acheive his orgasm, not realizing that there was no "antidote" to save him from death.

Regina Spektor – Wasteside Lyrics 17 years ago
the narrator is trying to express the concept of sleeping through life. time passes so pleasantly, "dreaming dreams and drooling on my bed." She does not see a problem with the time she is wasting, because she believes she has plenty of time- "wasteside of tomorrow-" but she thinks it's okay, because she doesn't think she's missing much at the present time, "better than sleeping on the wasteside of today."
she marks the first milestones of the childhood of the people around her, from birth to their very first haircuts, but then time is fastforwarded to their deaths. This gap in the timeline is reaffirmed by the observation that the only businesses that are open and receiving customers seem to be barbershops and funeral homes, and nothing in between.
she seems to be offering an excuse for her actions, addressing "ladies and gentlemen" with an explanation of what she has been doing all her life, but is cut short by her own gasping breath trailing off, symbolic of the fact that she cannot make any explanation that could gain her that time back.
