Jack's Mannequin – Rescued Lyrics 15 years ago
This song makes me want to cry every single time I hear it. I don't doubt it's about his cancer diagnosis and his inability to deal with all of the sudden sympathy - almost like he's giving up on himself - but I hear so many things in this song. Everyone can relate to it, whether it's about alcohol abuse, drug abuse, eating disorders, self-inflicted pain, cancer, AIDS, or just being emotionally wounded.

One of the best songs I've ever heard, and that's saying a lot.

Jack's Mannequin – Kill The Messenger Lyrics 15 years ago
I know this isn't a perfect analysis, but I really do feel like this is about drugs. It's all in the way he talks about how the one thing he needs could be the thing that leaves him "locked up here forever" - while I don't take that to literally mean being locked up in jail, I know that the one thing users need is the one thing that perpetuates their struggle. All the talk about giving in and the colors getting grey, and him losing feeling...

I feel like it's a struggle for him between the life he used to lead and the life he wants to lead. He knows that if he kicks this, he'll have everything he's ever wanted, but he's apologising to the girl for all of the problems he is going to cause until he's completely better. He's staying away from her until he can be good enough. It's adorable and heartbreaking.

Third Eye Blind – Good for You Lyrics 15 years ago
Am I the only one who sees this and thinks of someone talking to their child? I get the feeling that the father doesn't have a good relationship with the son - he keeps messing everything up and his son harbors grudges against him for that, which he feels are justified even if he finds them difficult to live with. The father wants to put himself back together and be there for the son, whose anger is making him into an angry young boy, but his son won't have any of it. So it's about how he hopes he'll come around eventually and understand that his father will always be there, no matter what.

Death Cab for Cutie – Your New Twin Sized Bed Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm going to have to agree with avocado. I don't see this being about Ben at all, or even a random person he saw on the street. The line "It's like you're in some kind of hurry to say goodbye" makes me feel like it's something else. In fact, I almost feel like it's a recent ex, one who has thrown away all of her dreams about love because their relationship didn't go well. But I also get the sense that they're still in this relationship - she's getting distant and throwing out her new bed because she feels like it can never work (the bed is used, but it's also a metaphor for love - she doesn't feel like her heart is getting enough). And so she's in some kind of hurry to say goodbye.

Nirvana – Come As You Are Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay, look. If you've ever read his journals, you can maybe offer some minimal insight into his death. Maybe. If you haven't, all you're going on is rumors and newspaper clippings, unless you knew him personally or you were there when he died.

Can't we all just stop and understand that he's dead? No one knows how, no one knows why. His suicide note was ambiguous at best. I hate to sound harsh, because I really do think Kurdt was an incredible mind, but you all need to grow up and accept that there are mysteries around death. So one person screaming about Courtney Love wanting a fortune and another person shouting that Kurdt didn't care about his family isn't going to solve anything at all. It probably won't even fix your aggression issues.

That being said, this is definitely a great song, just not the greatest. Personally, I see it as the threshold from which Nirvana took off. I'd imagine that Kurdt saw it the same way, too, and from what I've noted from reading his journals is that he loathed the publicity that came afterwards. Nevermind was a work of Art; the public loved it, and he hated it for that same reason.

Done.

Nirvana – Floyd the Barber Lyrics 16 years ago
In his journals, Kurt wrote the first draft of these lyrics, which were as follows:

Bell on door clanks - come on in.
Floyd observes my hairy chin.
Sit down, chair, don't be afraid.
Steamed hot towel on my face.
I was shaved (x3)
Barney ties me to the chair.
I can't see, I'm really scared.
Floyd breathes hard, I hear a zip.
Pee pee pressed against my lips.
I was shamed (x3)
I sense others in the room.
Opey, Aunt Bee (sic), I presume.
They take turns in, cut me up.
I died smothered in Andy's butt.
I was shaved (x3)

Matchbox Twenty – How Far We've Come Lyrics 16 years ago
These lyrics are all wrong.
Here are the right ones:

I'm waking up at the start of the end of the world,
but it's feeling just like every other morning before.
Now I wonder what my life is going to mean if it's gone.
The cars are moving, like, a half a mile an hour and I
started staring at the passengers who're waving goodbye.
Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time?
But I believe the world is burning to the ground.
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
Well I believe it all is coming to an end.
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
I think it turned ten o' clock, but I don't really know.
Then I can't remember caring for an hour or so.
Started crying and I couldn't stop myself.
I started running, but there's nowhere to run to.
I sat down on the street and took a look at myself,
said, "Where you going, man? You know the world is headed for Hell.
Say your goodbyes if you've got someone you can say goodbye to."
I believe the world is burning to the ground.
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
Well I believe it all is coming to an end.
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
It's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone.
There is no one on the corner and there's no one at home.
It was cool, cool, it was just all cool.
Now it's over for me and it's over for you.
Well, it's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone.
There is no one on the corner and there's no one at home.
Well, it was cool, cool, it was just all cool.
Now it's over for me and it's over for you.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.
Let's see how far we've come.

Plain White T's – Down The Road Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this one is pretty obvious.
The singer is leaving his town, but he knows that he's leaving the people that care about him as well as the people that don't.
So he says that no matter where he goes, he'll run into them eventually.
Or, if you want to take the metaphorical route, he's saying that they'll always be with him, that he'll always "see them down the road".

Rufus Wainwright – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I know a lot of people have said this, but I'm not at all a religious person and yet I still find special meaning in this song. The first time I heard it, I cried. The second time, too. Perhaps I'm simply an emotional, sensitive person, but both wainwright's haunting voice as well as the piano chords and the lyrics moved me beyond compare.

"Maybe there's a God above, but all I ever learned from love was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you."

To me, these lines hit hardest because he's almost questioning the existence of a God, then going back to love, as if saying that his lessons throughout life are more important to him than finding out whether or not there is an omnipotent being above us.

"It's not a cry you can hear at night, it's not somebody who's seen the light. It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah."

I think that these lines, also, mean that he's saying there are more important things than searching for answers, perhaps even that he's too broken to bother. "It's not somebody who's seen the light" gets me, voiding out the religious meaning that others have seen. At least, for me. It's as if the lyricist (Leonard Cohen, I believe) is saying that love isn't just the love between a God and a person on Earth, it's more complex than that.

No matter how you interpret it, no matter who sings it, it's beautiful.

Lisa Loeb – She's Falling Apart Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm actually going to agree with bitterfairy on this one. I've seen pictures of girls who are anorexic and I have personal experience in the eating-disorder area. It's quite common for girls with eating disorders to wear baggy clothing to conceal their weight loss so that people who care about them won't force them to seek help and so they can avoid a confrontation. I never even considered the cutting angle.

alaskalover: who says sex can't be beautiful? Granted, I shouldn't speak, as I'm definitely still a virgin and completely prude, but when you're in love with someone, it can be gentle and sweet and something that takes you to new heights. So if he's in love with the girl, that works. And it's still beautiful.

Jimmy Eat World – Your House Lyrics 17 years ago
Something makes me think it's "don't go tell me now" as in; don't go telling me now. Not "don't go, tell me now". Just because.. just because the next line, "don't call", makes it seem like he doesn't want to know. He's saying that he can't stand falling back into that relationship because he knows he's going to get hurt, so he's saying "Don't tell me if you love me, don't tell me if you care, please."

I can relate.

"Well, nothing's free except a little bit of bad advice."

I agree with HRslammR in that he's basically saying, "screw you, I'm better than that" to her. She was too indecisive, too much of a pain, and the more he tried, the less she tried, so he's over it. Or, at least, he's trying to be?

Sherwood – The Simple Life Lyrics 17 years ago
"And you may be just what I have always been searching for; a light through an open door, darling. But you're guarding it all night."

He wants this girl more than he's ever wanted anything, and he knows that she's not into him, so he's pushing for their relationship. But he also knows that being too pushy isn't the way to get her, ie: "I will whisper a song in your ear... if you remember the tune, it's all I can do."

He doesn't think it'll work, but he'll try anyway, and see what happens.

Oh, how I love Sherwood.

Jimmy Eat World – If You Don't, Don't Lyrics 17 years ago
I... I am this girl. I know, I know how dumb that sounds, that I know that and that I can admit it, but that I can't fix it. But I am. I'm that girl who wants a guy for a year and then, once she gets him, can't make up her mind. I feel terrible for the things that I've done and I'm really working to get better at it, but this song just makes me want to apoligize for everything and try to get him back.
