Robbie Robertson said that when he wrote this song, it was just one of those things, where as he's writing, one word just led to another. He is talking about Nazareth Pennsylvania though. Overall, I don't think he even knows what it means. |

Yeah matzy is right. I read one of PJ's biographies, and Vedder describes how he just started spouting words in order to accent the music. Definitely one of my favorite all time songs though. The guitar solos themselves tell the story of mixed emotions. Very powerful. |

When a girl left me in a bad way, I'd listen to this song over & over again. I think the circus represents good & fun times that are "crumbling" down. She was supposed to go with him to Baltimore, but she left him. Left him with every need in the world, and he just needs something, anything, to make it a little better. |
