Echo and the Bunnymen – Ocean Rain Lyrics 19 years ago
the song is a metaphor for a relationship. In this case, the ship is the narrator and the ocean is the other person (presumably the female). McCulloch is comparing the grueling hardships of a Christoper Columbus-like journey over the seas to a relatioship. The waves are the obstacles or the hardships that accompany any normal relationships; the ocean rain is the emotions that are stirred in relationships, basically representing tears. The narrator is essentialy "screaming from beneath the waves" of the other person to express all the sorrow that this other person has caused him to feel.

Basically this song's a comment on the powerful emotions that relationships can stir. McColluch makes this comment in a very poetic fashion, very Poe-like, or to a lesser extent, Wilde-like.

and that's why the bunnymen kick ass.

antics grows on me like some kind of crazy fungus. I felt the same as you did at first. I guess i was expecting another Turn on the the Bright Lights. But this one is great in its own rights. The song and A Time to Be so Small are my favorites.

Interpol – A Time to Be So Small Lyrics 19 years ago
reminds me of the murder scene from The Talented Mr. Ripley

yet, somehow the song almost has a...happy feel to it(not sure if that's the right word). Definetely not the kind of mood you'd expect to hear in a song presumably about murder...that's why i like it so much.

the new album is as good as the first, if not better.

David Bowie – All the Madmen Lyrics 20 years ago
about the holocaust, i'm guessing, and the horrible experiments the jews were subjected to, resulting in loss of sanity (among other things).

not sure what the last two lines translate too, "Zane, Zane, Zane, Ouvre le Chien"

my fave song on Man Who Sold the World

I don't usually go out of my way to criticize bad bands, but let me just say that nicklav is right on. It's not that we don't understand Linkin Park's lyrics; i mean, whats not to understand, they're so clear and straight forward...but THATS THE PROBLEM. try putting some depth in to the music, please.

Sigur Rós – Untitled 8 Lyrics 20 years ago
this is one of the most powerful songs i've ever heard. Sigur Ros carves such amazing mood to all their songs. The mood i get from this one is a mix of fear, acceptence, and suspense. My favorite on the album, although they're all brilliant.

Pixies – Monkey Gone to Heaven Lyrics 20 years ago
best pixies song ever!

I always thought the line "this monkey's gone to heaven" is just using the monkey as a metaphor for man, since we evolved from apes and all. Maybe Frank was making a statement that although man has evolved physically, the nature of man hasn't, case in point man's disregard for nature with the "ten million pounds of sludge from New York and New Jersey".

I always thought the last verse refers to the monkey's (or man's, whatever u want to call him) ascension to heaven. from 5 to 6 to 7(we all go to heaven).

Jeff Buckley – Grace Lyrics 20 years ago
"wait in the fire"

is he referring to life, possibly, as he waits for death to extinguish the flames? if so that would imply a painful life. i dunno, Buckley seems very accepting of death in this long, but not in a 'please put me out of my misery' kind of way. Hence the reason why this line throws me off. Maybe i'm just way off here.

Radiohead – Climbing Up the Walls Lyrics 20 years ago
Most underrated Radiohead song in my opinion. If Hitchcocks "Psycho" came out in the late nineties, this would've fit perfectly on the soundtrack.

Did you know the OK Computer version of this song was recorded live in an empty ballroom? One take and perfection. God these guys are so talented.

Pink Floyd – The Gnome Lyrics 20 years ago
this song gets really creepy when Syd starts whispering:

"Look as the sky. Look at the river. Isn't it gooooood?"

it gives me shivers. The good kind of shivers.

Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics 20 years ago
Roger Waters was feeling sick and out of it one night before they were about to play and didn't want to perform that night. Stage management pumped him full of some kind of stimulant/booster kind of drug and dragged him on stage, forcing him to perform. A similar scene takes place in "The Wall" movie. This song was written about that experience.

Syd Barrett – Dark Globe Lyrics 20 years ago
i find the line "with eskimo chain I tattooed my brain all the way" very interesting. eskimos live in solitude. Maybe Syd feels like an eskimo chained down and his brain altered.

This is a window into the mind of a schizoprenic. It's hard to analyze the lyrics because Syd Barret saw life from such a different way that most people ever do while writing this song. However, i'd say its safe to say that this song is Syd acknowledging that, yes, he is insane and he's asking for help.

Modest Mouse – Float On Lyrics 20 years ago
personally i really like the new album. Bukowski and This Devils Work Day(awesome Tom Waitsish style sound) stand out as my favorites. To people who say they are abandoning their indie roots, i don't think that's true. I think that, like most other good bands, their sound is evolving. It obviously has more 80's pop and classic folky blues type influences in thier music now. Sure, we'll all miss the grunge/hick hybrid sound of Lonesome Crowded West, but MM is exploring different directions right now. I say good for them. it's better than going stale.

As for MM being the "cool" thing to listen to these days, i think that only applies to Float On, easily the band's most accessable song. I can understand the worry of the true MM fans feeling like they might be losing them to the beer guzzling frat types of the mainstream, but i think their music is just too different for them to stay mainstream for long. I say give it time: MM will stay cool, but not "cool".

Sigur Rós – Untitled 4 Lyrics 20 years ago
Could Vanilla Sky end on a song thats more dreamingly peaceful and uplifting than this one?

and a side note, anyone else think most of the lyrics throughout the entire album, despite their being made up dribble, all sound very similar to "You sat/sang along the fire"?

Interpol – Leif Erikson Lyrics 20 years ago
I've been thinking about this song a lot lately. i think it's about 2 individuals who are attracted to the subtleties(sp?) of the other's personality.

"she says brief things her loves a pony"
she has a cutesy, sort of naive attitude about life and shows her love in that obvious lovey dovey kind of way

"my love's subliminal"
his love is harder to detect, but its there, sort of "between the lines"

the two of them connect in such a way that they don't need to say much to know how the other feels, hence:
"it's like learning a new language, helps me catch up on my mind"

i'd love to know what anyone else thinks.

Joy Division – Ceremony Lyrics 20 years ago

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics 20 years ago
I'll go with Decades as the best Joy Division song, followed by Transmission in a close second. This is a great song as well, though, and agree with LastGreatMistake that this one gets people hooked on Joy Division in the first place. That was certainly the case with me.

Radiohead – Let Down Lyrics 21 years ago
Those are some awful ballsy comparisons...jonny and hendrix have completely different styles and you really can't compare them. well, its my opinion that hendrix's technical skill goes unparralleled to this day. i mean, the guy was pretty much a perfect guitarist.

anyway, thats a little offtrack. the song is about how many people feel empty inside, and so they create false emotion to feel more alive, hence, "dissappinted people clinging onto bottles".
this false emotion only makes them feel more empty, "and when it comes its so so disappointing".

basically, it's about drama queens. i hate drama queens.

Pink Floyd – The Scarecrow Lyrics 21 years ago
Some have theorized that when Syd wrote this song it was sort of like he was prophecizing(spelling?) his own doom later on in his life, when he completely mentally broke down.

"His head did no thinking, his arms didn't move"
when things got really bad for Syd it was almost as if he was in a catatonic state, not moving or saying a thing, just staring off into space.

Syd Barrett – Golden Hair Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is actually a James Joyce poem. Barret wrote the music for it when he was only 16.

I think the theme of the song is love, as are most songs on "the madcap laughs".

Blink-182 – Dammit Lyrics 21 years ago
I find it hilarious how offended and profane some of you people get over this band. whether they're "sell outs" or "suck ass" are "are not punk", all three of those are argueable, and i can just picture some of you going at each other with a splinter of wood with a rusty nail. there is such a thing as free speech, and although i may not always agree with other people's opinion, i still don't threaten to sodomize the other person to back my point. seriously...chill out. it's just a band.

as for me, i don't think blink are that good, although they did help get me into punk music back when i did like them. i still don't think they're punk, but they are a bridge between pop and punk, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. tru, their lyrics and guitar rifts are incredibly simple, but the band has some admirable qualities(like travis is one kick ass drummer). yeah, i've rambled for a while. peace out.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 21 years ago
The beauty of this song is in its simplicity. Such a simple motive, yet so powerful at the same time. I wonder what Syd barret thinks about all these songs that Pink Floyd wrote specifically about him?

"We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year."

pure genious...

what a great song. very hard to interpret, as are most pixies song(which is one of their traits that makes them so great to begin with). personally, i think it's just about senility, and how the characters depicted in the song have grown old but still find enjoyment in their own delusions. who knows...

New Found Glory – My Friends Over You Lyrics 21 years ago
these guys aren't punk; they're today's "in" band. punk music is supposed to go against the norm, to rebel against society, and at one point, a long long time ago, it was political. buy NFG's new album if you like watered down radio friendly rock. buy "nothing gold can stay", their older, and by far best album, if you like good music.

their new music falls in the same category as Avril Lavigne. kids, buy it cuz MTV tells you its cool!

can you find this song on any cd's? it's not on their EP nor their full length album. my friend played it one time and i thought it was an great song, but since i'm stuck w/ a god awful computer i can't fully enjoy the privileges of downloading songs. deprived i am, yes i know.

I recently met the lead singer from Something Corporate and he is a really nice guy. I think its great when a band is not so much stuck on themselves but really do it for the fans, and thats exactly what these guys are about. Hell, thats what music SHOULD be about. so, rock on SC, see you at your next show.

Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics 22 years ago
I think what Kurt was saying was that he didn't like his role-model status; afterall, all these teens looked up to him, some even worshipped him, and the fact was Kurt had serious drug issues. He didnt want to be a role model, because frankly he wasn't a good one. When he says "I wish i was like you, easily amused" he is referring to his fans and the fact that they adore everything he does. Of course this is only my opinion. It's great to see so many other intelligent opinions as well.

this is my favorite song on pinkerton. its so much grungier then most of their other songs; everytime rivers starts screaming i just can't help but bang my head in classic rock and roll fashion. have to agree w/ one of the other posters saying that rivers just wanted some good ol' fashioned casual sex. afterall, they became big stars after releasing the blue album. suddenly rivers realizes: "hey! women want me!" lol...i love Pinkerton because i can so relate to the theme of the album...well except for Pink Triangle. lets see what the future holds shall we.

whoa, no one has posted about this song yet. it's only the best vines song(in my opinion).

so i think that this song is about being away from a loved one for an extended period of time, but this guy is confident that they will eventually be together. meh...i might be wrong, but thats what i like about the vines, is that you can interpret thier lyrics in different ways.

The Vines – 1969 Lyrics 22 years ago
definitely one of my favorite vines songs, and definitely about drugs. The character in the song is on this downward spiral, and ultimately destroys himself.

This band really knows how to make a good song. everyone should own this cd, its one of the best albums i've heard in a very long time. their sound makes me think of nirvana combined with the beatles....a wierd combination, yes, but these guys manage to pull it off. I can't wait to see them live again.

Jimmy Eat World – Your New Aesthetic Lyrics 22 years ago
Does anyone else find it ironic how everyone is argueing over whether or not JEW has sold out, when the meaning of this song strongly criticizes not only the bands that do, but the radio stations and tv stations that determine what is popular? JEW is not a sell out band. They probably never will be. Just because they are finally achieving media success, it does not mean they have forgot about their fans. JEW is all about the fans, and completely agree that they deserve their popularity.
