Blur – Country House Lyrics 13 years ago
Cast_No_Shadow is correct, it's about Dave Balfe.

He left the music business after earning a lot of money signing Blur (and Jesus Jones) to his label Food, selling that label to EMI, and moved to the country. He's now back in the music industry managing The Agitator if anyone is interested in a coda for the song. Slightly odd bloke, kinda looks like a magician, but seems nice (has a reputation for being difficult though).

Charlene – I've Never Been To Me Lyrics 13 years ago
here's a review of it i wrote for a magazine called Dummy. the key point of the review is that it was written by two men. i love the song because it's so wrong, especially as it's men writing that women should stay at home. this wouldn't get released these days, for better or worse.

Charlene
Never Been To Me
In the mid ‘70s women were only just getting the freedoms they deserved. So the tales that Charlene is relaying on this country-pop epic seem particularly exciting. Swanning around the globe, she romps with preachers, gets undressed by kings and sees some things that “a woman ain’t supposed to see” (what, like a bloke lighting his farts?). It all sounds like the perfect life after the oppression of your apron-ed mother.
But oh no, Charlie is moaning — she’d swap it all for the “unborn children that might have made me complete.” Not only that, she wants to tell disconcerted mothers and regimented wives that they should stay home and let their husbands have their joyless fumbles. Rather odd take on this new freedom, wouldn’t you think? Well not when you take into account a couple of facts. Firstly, Charlene went on to record an album of Christian songs after this was a belated hit. And ‘Never Been To Me’ was written by — of course — a couple of men.
So it’s puritanical, patronising and sexiest — which is exactly why it’s sounds so good in these days of inoffensive pop. Morality tales are a relic of another musical age, as is the delicious voyeurism derived from songs based around stories. A couple of years later AIDS would hit and Charlene would no doubt feel vindicated. But as the strings soar around her breathy vocals, pop music has never sounded sexier.
Now, where can we find a king to undress us — the champagne’s getting warm and the yacht is about to set sail.

The Maccabees – No Kind Words Lyrics 14 years ago
Orlando told me in an interview that it wasn't about Rob, the drummer who left and has now kicked the booze and drugs, but that's what i thought it was about.

Firebrand drummer Rob left in a cloud of personal problems. Listening to No Kind Words it sounds like it could be about him, but Orland is firm.
“No,” says Orlando like a man who doesn’t want to talk about it. “It’s about another friend who wasn’t having a very good time.”

Gillian Welch – My Morphine Lyrics 16 years ago
i've never been able to confirm whether the morphine is a metaphor for a woman or whether the song is personifying an addiction. anyone any idea?

Stina Nordenstam – Soon After Christmas Lyrics 16 years ago
really wanting someone at christmas time is brutal, and this song sums it up perfectly. if you're single and have a deep crush on someone, try not to listen to it this xmas.

New Order – Ceremony Lyrics 16 years ago
there is a joy division version with ian curtis singing, but it's a really rough demo and i like the new order version actually.

New Order – Round & Round Lyrics 16 years ago
Oldironside is right, apparentlyu but the Tony Wilson is the boss of Factory records, not New Order's manager. he was ploughing loads of money into the hacienda nightclub at the time and it was making no money back. he was always more interested in creating amazing things rathr than making money and didn't mind who's cash was going into the project. still, a hero that left a real legacy. RIP.

LCD Soundsystem – North American Scum Lyrics 16 years ago
probaly not the place for it but the whole louis theroux posh idiot thing is an act to get his subjects to open up and not feel threatened. the interview with him about jimmy saville on 50 greatest Documentaries was very interesting. he's very clever but jon ronson probably does the faux-niave thing better.

Pet Shop Boys – Rent Lyrics 17 years ago
Neil Tennant has said that this is sung from the perspective of a kept, younger mistress - something very much talked about in the 80s when this was written. a great song, but i always thought that it was "i'm your poppet, i love it" which i think is sweet. shame. thier best song, i would say.

thanks residentgiant - i always wondered if it actually happened or not. i like the track better for not being a report but a story.

LCD Soundsystem – New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down Lyrics 17 years ago
brilliant Lou Reed-esque song that echoes a lot of this indie-dance scene in NYC - another good example about how New York was better dirty and fucked up is Radio 4's Dance To The Underground. !!! also feel the same about the city.

LCD Soundsystem – North American Scum Lyrics 17 years ago
a much misunderstood song this, at least in the UK. it's not saying that north americans are scum, it's James Murphy getting pissed off with a racist generalisation about the country he's from. and he's right - there's good and bad in america and you shouldn't judge a person by their government.

these are the key lines:

"i hate the feelin' when you're looking at me that way
cause we're north americans
but if we act all shy, it’ll make it ok
makes it go away."

important sentiment, i can't believe no one (journalists, music fans) gets it.

LCD Soundsystem – Losing My Edge Lyrics 17 years ago
Yaz = Yazoo! i never knew this.

in britain Vince Clarke's band were called Yazoo and there's a pop dance singer called Yazz. this makes a lot more sense now. i'm pretty sure everyone in the UK is slightly confused to see Yazz turn up in this song. Yaz(oo), indeed, do rock as pointed out above.

LCD Soundsystem – Losing My Edge Lyrics 17 years ago
i interviewed James Murphy for DJmag when this came out and asked him whether it was dangerous putting humour into songs and he told me that the message in this is totally serious. he did feel washed up, and to a degree he was. his band had split and he was starting all over again.

obviously the stuff about being at the Suicide practices isn't for real, but is a way of demonstrating that no matter where you've been, you can still come crashing out of the inner circle.

it's all brilliant, but my favourite line is where he admits that the people that have surpassed him are "actually really, really nice." that stops it being bitter and makes the song gives the song a sad edge to go against the humour.

there are so many jokes hidden in this for people who love music that that adds another level to everything. throw in the list of his records at the end and you've got a song that works on so many levels.

i'd rate this as perhaps the best song this century, especially as the production is mindblowing. this record started this current wave of indie dance music. back in 2001 (or there abouts) james told me he wanted to make dance music that was also punk rock - not just layer beats under guitars or lay guitars over a dance track. with this, and House Of Jealous Lovers by The Rapture (which he and Tim Goldsworthy produced as the DFA), he totally achieved that aim.

PS The DFA mix of Dare by the Gorillaz is up there with the best remixes ever. James Murphy is, in my opinion, the most important man in music today. i'm quite a fan.
