um, i'm not sure why everyone thinks this song is about pharmaceutical testing. i think it's just about selling your soul for money, particularly in show business. you sign your name/life away for cash... "found the backdoor out of teenage hell" i think it refers to just becoming rich. a lot of musicians aspire to be rich from a tender age. maybe they are even referring to themselves or anyone else in the business that may be selling out for cash. there's a teeny bit of regret, or guilt... "except the tics won't go away." but in the end they push it away, brush it off, "i'm gonna die alright!" |

i'm not sure if i'm correct, but it sounds like the genius commits suicide in the lake. it is his secret... in the chorus it's like she's telling him to hold in his breath until he comes back out of the water in full. instead, i guess he lets it go and dies. she thinks he is a foolish child. maybe he didn't value his life the way he should. the film crew and reporters come in to report what happened. and life goes on... like nothing happened... the kids wake up hung over, the garbage men etc. while the genius was maybe hoping something would come of his death. he was asleep "dreaming that the antidote was orgasm." i'm not really sure what that means, but i get the impression he had romanticized suicide somehow. he had made a mistake, but it was too late. he hadn't thought it through... a foolish child. |

i think he is comparing being with the girl, particularly having sex with her to being high, very likely heroin. "i want to take you down, make the river flow" river flow refers to the wetness of having sex. there is are two possible interpretations here... he wants the girl to get high with him; this may be literally (on heroin) or it could be figuratively (having sex, being together) or both. It's poetry, it's not gonna be cut and dry. Take what you want from it. through it all, the singer does seem to have a negative view of heroin. it is an addictive drug. it feels wonderful and beautiful, but at the same time is bad... hence all the negative references... "getting low" "miles below their feet" "junkie cosmonaut" "disgraced cosmonaut" being separated from reality is nice, and he wants it bad, but at the same time there is something not healthy about it. just like being love. if you have ever been in love, you will understand entirely. |
