Elvis Costello – Miracle Man Lyrics | 4 years ago |
"Men have given you a bad reputation just because you've never been denied." |
Blue Öyster Cult – E.T.I. Lyrics | 5 years ago |
@[Rooskie:29774] 1. The King in Yellow refers to a famous and often referenced volume of occult short stories by Robert W. Chambers, not something by Heinlein. 2. You don't need to read anything to understand BOC. |
Blue Öyster Cult – E.T.I. Lyrics | 5 years ago |
Third verse here is wrong. Should be: Dead leaves always give up motion I no longer feel emotion Where prophecy fails, the falling notion "Don't report this, agents of fortune" |
Blue Öyster Cult – Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll Lyrics | 5 years ago |

Corrections to these lyrics: And Santa clause multiplied by i? -> (lower case i is the square root of -1.) And what's the opposite of ln(x) -> (natural log of x) Duraflame, the unnatural log |
Bo Burnham – My Whole Family... Lyrics | 7 years ago |
My grandma gave me a present just last year And the card said, "Happy birthday queer". |
Princess Superstar – I Like It A Lot Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Came hear looking for a great song with this title by Heartsfield from 1977, and found this instead. |
Chuck Berry – You Never Can Tell Lyrics | 8 years ago |
As mentioned, this song is about a teenage couple that managed to stay together, against the odds. The oldsters who observe this, having expected it to fall apart quickly, are surprised and say "huh, that's life, you never can tell". This song probably had personal meaning to Chuck Berry. In 1959, he was arrested and imprisoned on trumped up charges of violating the "Mann Act", related to a sexual relationship he allegedly had with an underage girl. This song was written while Berry was in prison. And no, this song is not about a young couple who have died, as one comment would have it. The use of past tense in the song is just the perspective chosen by the songwriter, nothing more. |
Melanie Safka – Brand New Key Lyrics | 9 years ago |
Melanie herself has suggested that people not to take this song to seriously, but the lyrics are pretty simple to interpret and I'm sure she knew *exactly* what people would think, when she wrote them. First, old time quad roller skates needed a key to take them on and off. If you lost your key, you could use a needle nose pliers, with some difficulty. The 'lock and key' context of this song is also a classic euphemism for sex, and the song practically drips with teenage female sexual longing and awakening with practically every line. The young woman has had some experience already ("I go pretty far", "I've been all around the world"), but wants this particular young man, who's apparently more interested in someone else ("but you weren't alone"). The obvious sexual innuendo actually got this song banned from play by some radio stations back in 1971. |
The Jackson 5 – I Want You Back Lyrics | 9 years ago |
ps - I AM GROOT! |
The Jackson 5 – I Want You Back Lyrics | 9 years ago |
There's an incorrect lyric there. It's not: Cause now since I see you it is all I want you back It's: But now since I see you in his arms I want you back Actually makes sense this way! |
Peter Gabriel – In Your Eyes Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Rubbish. |
The New Pornographers – Myriad Harbour Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Well the lyric is definitely 'stranded at Bleeker and Broadway', which is in New York, not Vancouver. |
The New Pornographers – My Rights Versus Yours Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Divorce, definitely. This song is much too personal to be about something as sterile as DRM. |
Ra Ra Riot – Ghost Under Rocks Lyrics | 15 years ago |
himher, thanks for your help. I haven't listened to the EP version, but on Rhumb Line, it sounds like Allie sings 3 lines, not 4, that might be: Make sure you have all your stuff Before you leave, and he said "Goodbye, good luck" |
Ra Ra Riot – Ghost Under Rocks Lyrics | 15 years ago |
btw, can anyone decipher the female background vocals on the verse before the last chorus? |
Ra Ra Riot – Ghost Under Rocks Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The chorus of this song is quite literate and melancholy. And definitely a bit eerie how this song seems to presage Pike's death. |
Sons And Daughters – Gilt Complex Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think the lyrics all say 'metal', not 'medal'. Makes more sense. |
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Head On Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Several Mary Chain songs, including this one, are basically about drugs, dressed up in the language of love and sex. Getting a sexual feeling from drug use, if you will. Of course Jiim Reid denies it now, but considering his situation at the time these songs were written, his denials don't hold up. |
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Never Understand Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This amazing song is a paean to the delicious pleasures of an excessive lifestyle. And how, inevitably, some people in your life won't get the appeal. And for some reason, this is about the only one of their big hits that the brothers Reid never seem to play live anymore. |
Vampire Weekend – A-Punk Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Here's my take on some key lyrics from this song: "She spied the ring on His Honor's finger A thousand years in one piece of silver She took it from his lily-white hand" 'His Honor' would typically refer to an older gentleman, not a boyfriend or lover. In this case, one who's died, thus his 'lily while hand'. The word 'spied' suggests that Johanna is looking at the ring secretly or guiltily. Also, the ring is 'on' his finger, not in his hand; he isn't giving her the ring, she takes it off of his finger. "Showed no fear--she'd seen the thing In the Young Men's Wing at Sloan-Kettering" I think the 'thing' she'd seen at Sloan-Kettering was death, not the ring. Thus she was able to take the ring off the dead man's hand; she 'showed no fear' because she's been around dead people before. "His Honor drove southward seeking exotica Down to the Pueblo huts of New Mexico Cut his teeth on turquoise harmonicas" 'Exotica' could mean an antiquity. Turquose, often combined with silver; could the thousand year old ring have been from Mexico? Aztec, maybe? |
Vampire Weekend – Oxford Comma Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's Dharamsala, as given. Dharamsala is a mountain town in India, where the Dalai Lama lives. And brycesw: You're a moron. |
Arcade Fire – Keep the Car Running Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The person singing this song could be a criminal, planning on hitting a rival; they know his name, but not when or how he'll strike. Keep the car running is a common expression from 1940s gangster movies. While some of the lyrics suggest that he may feel guilty about what he does, and that he knows he'll likely get killed himself one day, I think all the religious and quasi-religious song meanings people are coming up with here to be a bit overwrought. |
Social Distortion – Far Behind Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Thanks for correcting the abysmally wrong lyrics. One of the best put-down songs ever. |
Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I haven't read every post here, so I don't know if someone else has mentioned this, but I was dumbstruck by Isaac's lyric - 'The universe is shaped exactly like the earth If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were' This is literally correct, topologically, according to theory. There is no 'edge', no outer margin of the universe, and nothing outside the universe. Space-time curves back on itself, and you would actually wind up where you started eventually. It's hard for us humans to picture it, limited as we are to thinking in 3 dimensions. However, the lyric - 'Given that our blood is just like the Atlantic' is completely wrong. Very different composition, and blood plasma is only 1/8th the concentration (osmolarity) of seawater. That's basically why drinking seawater instead of fresh water will kill you. |
Pela – Drop me off Lyrics | 17 years ago |
In a sleep i see a scene a sea of comfort and serene we’re walking through some fields of glass up to our waist into our past watch the road girl you are driving you’ll probably kill us both or drop me off there at the corner it’s better if we don’t but you are the fortunate one in this song you are the fortunate one so wake up, wake up we should make a holiday cause we probably seen it all and if my name is dead weight it’s been carried on too far up came the windy night don’t ask me about the cold ones cause i was saving up my stares and bouncing them off no one so turn your head girl you are driving you’ll probably kill us both or drop me off there at the corner it’s better if we don’t you are the fortunate one in this song you are the fortunate one in this song you are the fortunate one so wake up or leave |
Pela – Lost to the Lonesome Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Hey, we should crash the party on christmas eve hey, we should write our name on every wall we see hey, we should break our wallets at every bar hey, we could break the bed without broken hearts la la la la and we could leave the lonely and lost to their lonesome hearts don’t just stand there with your face in your hands don’t just stand there clean up your broken glass! hey, we should crash the party on new years eve hey, we should write our name on every wall we see la la la la and we could leave the lonely and lost to their lonesome hearts don’t just stand there like a ghost in my room don’t just stand there with that same old t.v. set don’t just stand there pointing out west and don’t stand there telling me i’m nothing don’t just stand there just tell me i’m something don’t just stand there just tell me i’m something don’t just stand there i am something |
Pela – Tenement Teeth Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Give us a beat for our halfway hearts and tenement teeth! a beat to fill up the room they’ll be splitting soon and dancing without feet a song when the days are long and your friends have gone lock the door, it won’t hurt no more you won’t feel the floor it’s only love it’s only love we did this before it’s only love and when the record’s done let it scrape and scratch let’s drag up the past and dance so give us a beat for our halfway hearts and tenement teeth! it’s only love it’s only love we did this before it’s only love recognized it right from the start it was the sound of a breaking heart are we hammering in our nails? are we taking down the sails? according to the pages in books on modern psychology a broken heart might not restart and very well might follow me down into the water, down into the water and downward we descend well i kissed your lips of ruby red and this is what was said "land" "land" "land" "land" |
Pixies – Cactus Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah, the guy's in prison. Sounds like a Mexican prison, at that. |
Elvis Costello – I'm Not Angry Lyrics | 17 years ago |
One of the angriest songs ever. |
Blue Öyster Cult – Astronomy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I've loved this song, and most early BOC, since the 70s. I was curious about the Metallica version, so I gave it a listen. Awful, just awful. Hetfield's singing doesn't fit the song at all. You Metallica fans really don't have a clue. |
Modest Mouse – Convenient Parking Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't think this song has anything at all to do with drugs. It's pretty obvious that it's about suburban sprawl and traffic congestion, from the lyrics and even the ironic song title. Anyone who lives in Sammamish/Issaquah (like me) can understand this song easily enough. |
Pixies – U-Mass Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah it's definitely a sarcastic song aimed at college kids. It's about U Mass, sure, but it could be just about any liberal arts school. "we're not just kids" - keep telling yourself that, kids. "to say the least" - a haughty affectation. "ideas to us that's dear" - to you, but no one else. "like capitalist, like communist" - embracing political concepts, without really knowing what they mean. Another typical college affectation. "like lots of things you've heard about" - A way to refer to concepts that you don't really understand yourself. Yeah, definitely mocking college kids. And mocking himself a bit too, since Black was also a pasty white intellectual nerdy college kid. |
Pixies – La La Love You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Just about every Pixies song is permanently etched in my brain. |
Pixies – Into The White Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I love how so many people think that EVERY interesting song just HAS to be about drugs or death. Whatever. This song is about space. As zertrudetrout mentioned, the Pixies did lots of songs about space and space travel, Motorway to Roswell being the best of them, imo. Just deal with it, OK? |
Pixies – Here Comes Your Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm guessing the real Black Francis knows how to spell 'signed'. Loser. |
Pixies – Broken Face Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It sure would be nice if someone corrected all the screwed up lyrics on this website now and a-fucking-gain. Although other lyrics sites are just as bad. Seems like they all get their WRONG lyrics from the same incompetent sources. |
Pixies – Down To The Well Lyrics | 17 years ago |
LOL, fucking exactly! So who 'ripped off' who, eh? |
Pixies – Motorway To Roswell Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The last line is "And he came right down" Makes a big difference. Some of the lyrics mistakes on these websites are so lame. |
Pixies – Head On Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Great great rocking song! Both the JAMC and the Pixies versions are excellent, and actually not all that different, which might make you wonder why the Pixies decided to cover it. Lyrically, though, it's one of the least interesting and most obvious Pixies songs, because of course, it wasn't written by Black. |
Pixies – Trompe Le Monde Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"i think that "trompe le monde" is an art movement... " No, you're thinking of trompe l'oeil. Unfortunately, this is one of the very few Pixies songs whose lyrics just don't mean much of anything to me. |
Pixies – Subbacultcha Lyrics | 17 years ago |
No one's mentioned it, but the repeated 'down here' references also emphasize the song's sexual tension between these two Goth kids. |
Pixies – Motorway To Roswell Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't get that he was 'badly treated' at all. He was driving by, thought he'd stop here for a bit, his craft malfunctioned and he crashed. Yes the government hid the evidence, but they weren't the cause of his fatal traffic accident. |
Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye Lyrics | 17 years ago |
oops. "such shine" |
Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Well I just listened to an early recorded live version of this song again (before Carnavas came out), and in it he clearly says "everyone can focus clearly, with suck shine" But it's definitely different on the album version. I think Brian just likes to tweak the lyrics. |
Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye Lyrics | 17 years ago |
What I believe he says here, and which also is grammatically correct and has some meaning: "everyone's so intimately rearranged everyone's so focused clearly, with such shine" |
The Strokes – 12:51 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I love The Strokes, but this song still needs some cowbell. |
