Nirvana – Serve the Servants Lyrics 17 years ago
What does the title "Serve the Servants" mean? Kurt thought for himself enough to realize that society affects people in subconscious ways, such as how we talk, our societal values, also it afflicts what we try to make of ourselves. In this song "the legendary device is such a bore" Kurt and many songwriters change just one word in a lyric, so thats a cool tool. Umm Serve the servants....self-appointed judges...Usually you don't serve the servants, but maybe he is refering to Adolescence, Society, hating your father....Serving, alla doing things just because you're supposed to. And now he's just bored of everthing. I guess we all get that way, sometimes. Kurt just knows how to write about it.

Nonpoint – Years Lyrics 17 years ago
This one rocks** Great way to let out angst accumulated from liars and decievers...on to the meaning. these aren't all the lyrics*

Read it like this:

There's no easier way out of this place,
I'm claiming this lie to you face to face to face to
(I'm claiming this lie on you, face to face, for you to face to...

-The chorus explains the song...
That's no way to treat me dear,
Someone you chose to lie to, all these years

Northstar – Dying Slowly Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about wanting someone to be a part of your life so much that your willing to compromise the other half of you that could do with out. Being in this melodromatic, hopeful/desperate situation is quite emotional....i find i like it. used to make me fell alive.

Northstar – Two Zero Two Lyrics 17 years ago
I picture them in a bedroom, both drunk or somewhat under the influence. And she is lusting for him.

1. I like the idea that the song is loosely based on Ralph Ellison's novel like web250 said.

2. I think promisexkept is right in her interpretation of a failing relationship and the girl he loves is a whore (at least 4 the moment).

-The song is beautifully sung "does that dress fit alright?" "My, my you look/ awful/ with a mouthful/ of sex like drugs....I just can't seem to switch off this moon she matters on the ivory and kerose-eene"

And my favorite part...I've got glass eyes that have died (dined) so many times, with thighs and sighs that scream gotta get mine.

The songs not about anorexia, why would he be involved with an anorexic chick?? Plus the words would be different. It's not about cheating, and it's not about pregnancy.

And this is just what i think...WHat does a girl have in her mouth besides his manhood? --My, my you look awful with a mouthful of sex like drugs. Plus this sure would be a way to seduce someone. Which to me is what this song is about. "He's just not/ ready to rot, and dance, and laugh, to the sweetest death/ I've ever had. Mind-blowing sex with someone you've experienced thousands of times...but you know its only for that sake. The life of their love has died.

Death Cab for Cutie – 20th Century Towers Lyrics 17 years ago
U guys are idgits. This song isn't about God, its not about 9/11. This song is a very self conscious outlook on life, regrets, and why we do things. 20th century towers. What were the 20th century towers?? Well lets see, the ideals for the 1900's, that Ben's parents instilled in him were probably; Grow up and be a man, go to college and/or get a good job. Meet the girl of your dreams get married. Have kids, have good friends that you like to spend time with. Retire, get old with the one you love and spoil your grandkids.

So after college (the last gleam of youth and carelessness) we'll correct our mistakes and we try and live through formal ideals. But things rarely work out the way we planned and many people often feel empty that everything that they've worked for, everything that we were told would make us happy--doesn't make us happy. So he realizes this and wants to tell everyone (talk up the town)--the reason we do the things we do is because this is what we were taught and the comfortable cars in motion....this is a metaphor, for going through the motions of life. It provides comfort and its something to do with our life. So we all drive ourselves. And even tho many of us realize we don't know what we to do with our lives, we keep moving we keep busy....just to get by.

incessent refrain could mean two things. 1. always having to hold back or 2. a more metaphorical meaning....refrain is a chorus or a verse. so the unyeiling chorus--that he doesn't mention, could be "one day i'll be content with what i have".

Have you ever washed the dishes or cleaned your room just to keep your mind off something, or just to accomplish something in the day- I think thats what he means by "keeping busy is just wasting time", "your restlessness makes you lazy" This song is sad and slightly cynical. Everyone understands the lament at the end of the song. About the girl..One of his sweetest memories was singing softly with his voice communicating the way his heart feels through her ear and to her brain. It's similar to the first part of the song b/c you have to choose what is good for you and what will work. And sometimes, rather all too often we have to settle and accept the hand we've been dealt and cards we are playing.

The Strokes – Razorblade Lyrics 17 years ago
You can't read songs line after line when you analyze it. Of course that is how you read but you have to look at the whole picture and THEN get down and dirty with the details. Love what everyone said I just wanna add my own 2 cents. Isn't like girls...kind of aloof and in their own little world..."I'd bet you'd pick it up and mess around with it if you put it down".

This song is so much about how men have to (and to a certain degree) like tending to their ladies. Everything that we do for them, take them out, massages, valentines day, reassuring their confidence, dousing them in our warmth. I mean its like everyday you have to make it special for them. And ya feel kinda jaded sometimes when you come up short and their dissapointed, Even though you try so hard for them! "Your feelings are more important, of course.

My take on the end of the song is that he doesnt' wanna know whatever it is. But of course the girl is persistent and she has to let him know. So go ahead. Tell me, tell me, tell me

No, ..Don't--Okay You have to let the girl win sometimes. Girls are delicate

The Strokes – Is This It Lyrics 17 years ago
Ya'll are doing autobiographical listening. This is when you hear something then translate it what it means to you! Think from julians shoes. 1. he is a songwriter, and in this he has the chorus, or the theme of the song, and the verses are a sample or an example of things he has experienced that make him feel this way.

He's trying to find meaning, questioning why he's doing what he's doing.

The song's pretty self-explanitory:

Cant u see I'm trying,
(thinks to himself) i don't even like it,
I just lie to get to your apartment (just haybags to pass the time)

Sex is good but when its over, ur like what am i doing here with this girl...So he's thinking about everything and alot of times we can be overwhelmed with thoughts and we just can't think anymore.

2nd part. He's in the bar and he's gotten into a confrontation with these guys. He tries to relate to them and say's "i'd be pissed if i was in the bar and then...." but the guys say he's gone too far. They all disagree. Then Julian adds i think we should disagree. Is this it..... sometimes the effort isn't worth it. such is life

The Strokes – New York City Cops Lyrics 17 years ago
Juss wanna add that Julian is somewhat of a womanizer...so its "kill me now if i let u down", and he has a hard time leaving because it was not in his expectations. Then i think she locked herself in her apartment when she knew the cops were on to here. And even tho she said every night "new york city cops, they ain't too smart". They finally caught on and she wrote a letter or text message to Julian who confessed he was somewhere inbetween. But like most men, we don't really care when we feel like we've been let down, aka "she says time to go now". So i think that Julian thinks its funny that all the time when he would go over there, she'd always say New York Cops are stupid. So he's prolly just laughin about it

Nirvana – Pen Cap Chew Lyrics 17 years ago
Pen Cap chew--has your conscience got to you for building trends, is that why unnoticing you eat your pens. once again about the human condition. People pick up habits (trends) from other people. Thats why those who realize that they can control/manipulate people are good at advertising and creating clothing styles. People are so....retarded. We wear stuff cause people say it's cool. I'm not sure what the lesser God he is talking about, does anyone know? It could be a number of things. Kurt was always an independent thinker and a rebel. He just wants to be set apart from society. In the early 90's there was alot of protest and riots, thus "this is the decade for rehashing, protest then go to jail for tresspassing" and "kill a politician then wear his clothes".

Nirvana – Spectre Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is surreal and hearing kurts voice and the music playing like that....4 me it made my spine tingle. What a cool song about....lonliness. and he explains it through the likeliness of a spectre aka a ghost. The mark of a talented writer is to be able to write from another perspective and/or about something you never experienced. Kurt was so free in his writing. An independent thinker. I grew my hair out and tried to be just liike him in several ways.

Nirvana – Verse Chorus Verse (Version 2) Lyrics 17 years ago
Raging Pyro is right on target with his interpretation on page 1. Kurdt really was brilliant, he took one of the hardest things to articulate....a part of the human condition. People just think they are happy cause that is the best it is gonna get. It is difficult for our psyche to accept that we are not happy so we have many conscious and subconscious ways to cope and feel happy. But have you ever had that nagging feeling bringing you down. You've been telling everyone how happy you are and everything's fine, and then u realized you've been depressed? You're in a laundry room. This is an extended metaphor, but just to prove a point; I believe if people were born in a 30x30 box with white walls and a few white obtrusions. And if they were given food and water and never knew about anything else in the outside world///Then they'd think they're happy too. But how could they be?? They're in a laundry room. This isn't about God's relationship with us, but Kurdt is sarcastic saying that "If you save yourself, you will make him happy" It's all about perspective and every human evaluates everything based on experience and two eye balls in our head.

Nirvana – If You Must (Version 2) Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is great because he talks about alot of things that we don't often talk about. It's about song-writing "write some words, make them rhyme". And as any person does... you sometimes question why your doing what your doing. "Is it me or my ego", "Is it me or my attitude". THen it is about making music sell, and this is very true. Its about the extremes. If you want to put off an image, you have to act it out...and it takes practice and perfecting to create an image that you want to sell. There is alot of pressure to create music for the people...not just music to express yourself. So it's "If you must"
