I agree with a few people above. This song is drawn from Orwell's 1984.

Incubus – Pardon Me Lyrics 15 years ago
I said this on "Nice To Know You" as well, but does ANYBODY hear the similarity between these two songs? (Pardon Me and Nice To Know You") I swear, they sound alike to me... and I don't think anybody has pointed that out... or at least I didn't take the time and read the comments.

I'm probably going to be cast out by every Incubus fan here, but does ANYBODY hear the similarity between this song and Pardon Me? Or am I just going crazy? I think I might be going crazy...

Ryan Adams – What Sin Lyrics 15 years ago
Jesus, this song is so freakin' good live! If you've never heard this song live, there's one particular YouTube video that captures most of the raw emotion and talent of Ryan Adams (Henry Rollins show version)... I highly recommend that you check that vid out.

WOAH... you guys gotta listen to the acoustic live version. Absolutely crazy... This man is amazing! He's one of the few who actually puts emotion and passion in every note of a song by using dynamics, insane vocals, well-thought lyrics, and whatever else he could use. I mean, I don't even know what to say to describe his music... it's just absolutely stunning.

Switchfoot – Daisy Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm pretty sure that the lyrics on one section is, "Are rich and debt the same?" I have a Switchfoot photobooth, and in it are some photocopies of Jon's handwritten lyrics and it says, "Are rich and debt the same?" I think it changes a little bit of the meaning of that stanza...

The meaning of the first half of the song is about somebody telling "Daisy" (Daisy might be a person, or just a use of symbolism... doesn't really matter) to let go of the petty and non-Kingdom building things of this world and to open her eyes to what God has displayed right in front of her. When Jon goes into the falling progression on the guitar during the bridge, he gives us sort of the sense that "Daisy" is finally starting to let go. And of course the crazy-hardcore-mess at the end of the song is when "Daisy" lets go completely. It's such a beautiful song!!!!

Jon Foreman – Equally Skilled Lyrics 16 years ago
Jon pretty much writes the aches of his heart here. He feels like he is the only one who truly wants God and feels like He's not even there "I feel like a fruitpicker who arrived after the harvest" (not in a bragging sense, but in a prayerful and desperation sense). Throughout the song he sings about the perverted justice in the world, even among brothers and sisters in Christ "The godly people are all gone". In the end of the song, Jon closes with reassurance that God will judge fairly in the end "And both of His hands are equally skilled".

Jon Foreman – Equally Skilled Lyrics 16 years ago
Uh... Where's the rest of the song? lol... Here's the rest:
At perverting justice
Both of our hands
Both of our hands

The day of justice comes
And is even now swiftly arriving

Don't trust anyone at all
Not your best friend or even your wife
For the son hates the father
The daughter despises even her mother

Look! Your enemies are right
Right in the room of your very household

And both of their hands are equally skilled
Are equally skilled

No, don't gloat over me
For though I fall, though I fall
I will rise again
Though I sit here in the darkness
The Lord, the Lord alone
He will be my light
I will be patient as the Lord punishes me for the wrongs I've done against Him
After that He'll take my case
Bringing me to the light and to justice
For all that I have suffered

And both of His hands are equally skilled
Are equally skilled

Jon Foreman – My Love Goes Free Lyrics 16 years ago
Absolutely beautiful song! Not exactly sure what it means. All I know is that he uses the caged bird as a symbol. I love how he makes the best line of the song so eerie yet lovely at the same time "If you love her let her go." Can somebody help me out on what he's singing about?

Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics 17 years ago
I know I looked at the first three pages and I didn't see much of what I was thinking this song was about. I don't know anything really about Chris Martin's life philosophy and stuff like that, but in another song, "Clocks" he state's that "You are." and that's it. That a being bigger than him is just "You are." Everything, Omniscience. Well, for some reason, this song seems as a song for a higher being than himself also. More specifically Jesus. "Your skin, oh yeah, your skin and bones turn into something beautiful." (maybe talking about the sacrifice He had given?) The verses are talking about the things and sacrifices Martin gave to just follow Him. "So then I took a turn for you" "I wrote this song for you and all the things you do" "For you I'd bleed myself dry" I honestly hear this meaning every time I hear this song! I tried hearing the love-song thing, but it turns wierd on the skin and bones part. Anybody else see what I'm saying? Because it's not just this song, but a lot of Coldplays songs that have this theme, Clocks, Speed of Sound, Yellow, Til Kingdom Come...etc.

Emery – Listening To Freddy Mercury Lyrics 17 years ago
OH MY GOSH PEOPLE!! YOU GUYS ARE MISSING ANOTHER POINT TO THE SONG!!!

I quote (kylee)"this is by far and away my favorite emery song,
mostly because of this song's Christian content."

I'm not picking on just you Kylee, but a lot of followers of Jesus. I don't know how many people base their likeness of a song based on the Christian content. I mean for Pete's sake, if that was the case, we should all love the song "Reach Out and Touch Faith" (by) Marilyn Manson. WOOHOO!

One line that should really stick out is, "To see if it's right or wrong, to listen to this song" He's pretty much mocking today's Christian society bubble and things like CCM. It's like we're in a bubble and don't want to see what's going on out in the world. I mean, how would we shake our heads and know "what they mean" if we haven't seen it ourselves? I could say a lot more, but I'm just gonna end it here.

OH speaking of reading into lyrics... all you "christian music people" and pagans (I'm mocking...it's a joke...it's ok to laugh) PLEASE look at this song by Emery...it's called "Listening to Freddie Mercury" This song has something to say about reading into lyrics and other things. What's CCM? And why is Christian a genre? (I really don't know what CCM is...) It sounds retarded to me...reading into lyrics to see if they are "christian" enough. ANYWAY... Thanks for the interpretation eltroyo11.... after listening to it a few times, I figured that he was being sarcastic in his "let's do it again" remark... When I first heard this song, I thought he was being literal... which, in a way he is, but then again, you know...

Switchfoot – Revenge Lyrics 17 years ago
This song pretty much refers to all humankind. In our "rightside up" and terminal world, revenge seems to be our only option. Whether that be to tattle tell on our little sister or to fight for "our rights" in war. But (in the best part of the song) Jon tells of his realization of the irony of how Jesus conquered the world: with love, not by sword.

Although the quote below is for the song The Loser, it explains also what this song is about:
"That's a fun song. It originally was a lot more Reggae and we had to kind of tone it down a little for the album. We came to the conclusion that we were white......very white. The song itself is about the upside down aspect of the kingdom of God, the Kingdom of Heaven. How the last will be first and the first will be last. Blessed are the people who are on the bottom because they're gonna be on top. That's what "The Loser" is about." -Jon Foreman

Switchfoot – Yesterdays Lyrics 17 years ago
Love song? I don't think so. Just recently, Switchfoot cancelled the European tour because of a family emergency of some sort, whether in the actual band or in the Switchfoot family. I'm pretty sure this song is about a death of some sort, either recently or maybe a while back before the cancellation. But anyway, this song really hits me in the heart everytime. I sometimes skip it cause I have also lost a friend in my early years and it makes me really sad (yet thankful, because it turned my life around) everytime I hear it. I really want to know who this song is about and I want to know what happened for the tour to cancel.

I agree with smedrick. Jon is pretty much targeting the inner problem, what we aim for. (check out my comment on Politicians) Like I said on Politians, this song is another of many that Jon and the band have put out that circle around the meaningless things of today's world. And Oh! Gravity is about how we can't seem to pull away from the "gravity" of these things. ok I went on a tangent, but really, most def. not a song about Iraq. I mean, huh? The fighting has to do with the constant race of who gets the most toys and the better name in the end. WHAT ARE YOU AIMING FOR?

Not only is this song what Jon is saying, but man'o'man is he crying out in this song (me too). He's tired of the wars going on inside and outside. He sees everything we've been working towards, like cars, homes, money, etc. But all this leads to "entropy and aching". The past few CD's have been about exactly these things, about how the more organized cultures are ignorant and aiming for the wrong things. Songs such as: We Were Meant to Live, Lonely Nation, Happy is a Yuppie Word (by the way, look at the book of Ecclesiastes. I'm pretty sure this is an influence in Switchfoot songs) Easier Than Love, etc. Jon and the rest of the band is definitely tired of the things he sees and wants something done, and not just talk about it. We need to be broken. "Come on and break me."

Underoath – In Regards to Myself Lyrics 17 years ago
This is an awesome song. It's plain to see what it's about. The title explains it, "In Regards to Myself"
He (or it could be his conscious) is pretty much telling himself to wake up and pull it together. The person in this song is so caught up with life, "busy living", "making vow" that weren't kept, etc. The one thing the person is afraid to do is to "step outside [the] box" and reach for the hand that will give him life. So, yeah, it's pretty much a song about realizing that the only thing true in life is God and we must compel ourselves to stop going with the motions of the world and reach for Him.
