Keane – Love Is the End Lyrics 15 years ago
I've been listening to this song over and over lately. And I do agree that it has to do with a friendship between a man and a woman. The song starts out kind of light-hearted and you can tell he cares for her as a friend but perhaps her feelings for him deepen to romantic love which he does not reciprocate. Thus, he knows that her love is the end of their friendship and he so badly wishes she would just take it back so they could go back to who they were:

Take it back, don't let it die
Or rage against the fallen night
Cos I still do, depend on you
So don't say those words, that wrung me through

That verse is SO powerful! I love it. I could be way off with my interpretation but it's just a guess. Anyone who's ever had a friendship with someone of the opposite sex knows that its complicated. In my opinion, one usually always carries a torch for the other one regardless if they ever admit to it or not. And it doesn't always turn out like When Harry Met Sally....

Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire Lyrics 15 years ago
While a lot of people have commented that this song is about sex, yes I agree. However, I think this song is about the secret lust for another. Its about the pent up aggression and fantasy of being with the other person. Right away in the first few lines, he sets the stage that either he or the other person has to lie still and not make a sound.

All the commotion
the kiddie like play
Has people talking
Talking
( I think this part insinuates that this must be for a friend and they've been overly flirty which has led to suspicision)

The dark of the alley
The break of the day
The head while I'm driving
I'm driving
( I think this is another part of his fantasy, he imagines the place where he'd be with her)
Soft lips are open
Knuckles are pale
Feels like you're dying
You're dying
( And in his head he plays out what would happen and how incredible it would be)

You
Your sex is on fire
You
Your sex is on fire
Consumed
With what's to transpire
(Again, he is consumed by the thought of what could happen and how it would be. Its just pent up sexual tension waiting to be released. Overall, this song is brilliant. If you've ever really wanted someone, it almost becomes animalistic and I think this song does a great job of capturing the feelings and fantasies associated with how it feels to truly LUST after another person. I don't think its about 'great sex,' rather the fantasy of how great you think the sex could be with someone you can't or haven't already had)

Bon Iver – RE: Stacks Lyrics 16 years ago
I saw an interview with Justin and he said this song is about sitting at a poker table and seeing your soul...i'll have to say though...I think that was an easy answer to a hard question about this song.

I like how he uses a poker table as a metaphor for life. Because to me that is what I think the song is about, living life, moving on, and growing as a person.

This my excavation and today is kumran
Everything that happens is from now on (SO powerful. Its the idea of digging deep inside yourself to understand why you are the way you are but then letting it be and moving on)
This is pouring rain
This is paralyzed ( and the rain is like a baptism into the future even though the thought of the future is hard and sometimes paralyzing)

I keep throwing it down two-hundred at a time
It's hard to find it when you knew it
When your money's gone
And you're drunk as hell (he's looking back on how he's lived his life just making bets too high to ever win and with reckless abandon)

The chorus I see as his internal exploration and unraveling of the emotional knots that are bringing him down. The words are intertwined and everchanging and he's just examining his own "stacks" that have been loading him down.

I've twisting to the sun I needed to replace
The fountain in the front yard is rusted out
All my love was down
In a frozen ground ( i think of this as the beginning of his metamorphosis. He's twisting towards the sun as a rebirth in order to thaw out old demons of the past in order to finally let them melt away. Maybe past loves and losses that he buried deep inside himself years ago)

There's a black crow sitting across from me; his wiry legs are crossed
And he's dangling my keys he even fakes a toss
Whatever could it be
That has brought me to this loss? (he also mentions a crow in Blindsided but in that song he is the crow...so maybe this is an alter-ego? I feel like he realizes that he is the one that has brought himself here. He is the crow )

This is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization
It's the sound of the unlocking and the lift away
Your love will be
Safe with me ( i love this part because he's kind of making light of the deep introspective journey he's been on. He may not be a new man but he's no longer chained by his own emotions and internal demons. And now he (and the crow) can fly away and move on)

God this song and its imagery brings me to a standstill....I hope I'm able to have such a soul-searching experience one day.

Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics 16 years ago
After learning that Justin said this song is about the pain of past relationships making their way into new ones brings a whole new perspective to the song for me!

I almost feel like he's talking to himself. Both people that are living inside of his heart, the broken one and the one that is trying to hard to move on. So often we let the broken one lead our lives and sabatoge future happiness so he's trying to hold onto his small ability to love, skinny love, and get through the hurt that still harbors in his heart.

"pour a little salt, we were never here" is a defense mechanism just trying to erase someone from your mind, the past love still haunting you.

"i tell my love to wreck it all, to cut all the ropes and let me fall" again a self-sabatoging act. So stuck on the fact that the former lover couldn't love you that you push away anyone else that might come close to making you so vulnerable again.

I hear the chorus as a self-mantra, said in the mirror:
I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
In the morning I'll be with you
But it will be a different "kind"
I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines

He is talking to both people inside. Asking himself to be patient, fine, balanced, and kind even though the hurt part usually wins out. He will wake up and be better and he will own up to the past yet leave the hurt or "fines" behind. He wants to be stronger....

The most gripping part of the song is "Now all your love was wasted? Well then who the hell was I?" Almost like a flashback to this past love.....that one thought we have that makes us cringe immediately with hurt.....Bringing him back to that sad vulnerable place

and it ends with him still wounded....hopeless...afraid he'll always be his own worst enemy as he pushes away love because of the past. Because some won't fight too hard for love, after awhile most will just fall far behind:

Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?

Brilliant song, brilliant lyrics, amazing all together

Bon Iver – The Wolves (Act I and II) Lyrics 16 years ago
To me - this song is about a relationship gone sour. And while one person is in mourning the other is moving on....the disconnect between them is made most obvious at the end, when on person is saying "what might have been lost" as in we have given up on a great thing! and the other person says "don't bother me" because they want to move on!

Going back to the beginning though:

The person in mourning is conflicted with feelings of sadness and resentment of what they feel and want the other person to feel it too. "someday my pain will mark you." Almost like saying to them "you may not feel the loss of me now but you will....you'll miss me too. "

And while the other one might already be moving on leaving the other alone to mourn, the mourner promises to be there for them when (IF) they ever come back "With the wolves around you, In the morning, I'll call you."

The next stanza is so brilliant: "Solace my game," anyone who's been through a break-up knows you must act cheerful on the outside while the other person is hurting you so much "swing your crane, and run me through."

this song chills me. he's managed to capture the inside turmoil that many of us have experienced when things "just don't work out."

Jack Johnson – What You Thought You Need Lyrics 16 years ago
I feel like this song is about two lovers with a past....but its a timing thing and when she wanted him, he didn't want her and now he wants her and she's not so sure so he's asking for a clean slate:

I can't take back things already gone
But I could give you promises for keeps
And I would only take them back
If they become your own and you give them to me

I feel like its his attempt to tell her that the future can be whatever they want to make of it and he'd like to try since when it comes down to it, they still have feelings....so instead of being cautious because of what happened before they should try to feel how it is now and move forward.

I dunno, just a thought....

Part of me has died
And won't return

Isn't that such a powerful introduction? Isn't just how you feel when you've finally gotten over the hurt of a relationship. The denial and now accepted its time to move on...somehow you just figure out a way to numb the pain. And hide it away, hopefully never to feel that way again.

I love how this song captures that feeling of disbelief you feel once you've picked yourself back up and realize that you can't go back. You'll never be able to feel the same way again with that person because of what happened.

Hear the sirens, call me home

And even though its over, you've suffered, you've learned, you're moving on....you want them to know that if they needed you, that if they hear sirens that you'll come back. because even though you had those feeling once before...and even though its over...you'll always hold them close to you. In a place that won't hurt...but a place that you can stand should they ever "call me home"

That is what the song means to me!

Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová – All the Way Down Lyrics 16 years ago
wow - i wish i would've written this song....To me, this is a song about a relationship that pretty much has beaten you up emotionally to the point where you finally know you have to move on...and when you go you promise yourself you'll never let anyone hurt you like that again. You'll be stronger next time. I'm not sure if this is what you are telling the other person or more like a pep talk to yourself.

(and) You have broken me, all the way now
You'll be the last, you'll see

Either way, its over. They never took care of you the way you deserved or needed when they had you and when you asked them for more or else, they showed you how much they didn't care

(and) Some fight you gave
When I pushed you away
From me

and you know that there is no chance...its over even though it hurts like hell ....cause they never got it and you know they just never will

(and) What chance have we got
When you missed every shot
From me

and maybe its gone up and down for awhile but you make a promise not to go back...

(and) In the darkness
When you find this
I'll be far to sea

and you make a promise never to allow yourself to be hurt or vulnerable like that again....the wall goes up.

(and) You have broken me, all the way down
You'll be the last, you'll see

Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová – If You Want Me Lyrics 16 years ago
When I hear this song I feel like it is a lullaby or ode to a past lover that is still on your mind....Or even an unspoken conversation an unrequited lover is having in their mind with the other person...Like the verse is what they say to the lover and the chorus is what they want the lover responds ...

When I get really lonely
and the distance causes our silence
I think of you smiling
with pride in your eyes

basically she's telling the person she misses them and she can see them sigh and hears them say

"if you want me satisfy me"

Maybe because when they were together she didn't know how...and now she wants to so she says back

Are you really sure
that you’d believe me
when others say I lie
I wonder if you could
ever despise me
when you know I really try
to be a better one
to satisfy you
for your everything to me
and I’ll do
what you ask me
if you’ll let me be
free

and again the lover says to them if you really want me then come, come back and satisfy me....or atleast that is what she hopes they'll say..

I feel like everyone can relate to this...knowing you messed up and knowing you want to be with the person because you realize your mistake and your only wish is that they'll let you back in!

Broken Social Scene – Lover's Spit Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is like the epiphany of realizing that you want more than just sex to connect with someone. One day you open your eyes to realize that you've been just experiencing physical closeness with another person for whatever reason.

Protection? Fear?

I think this song is beautiful and captures the reality of today. People have lost the ability to believe in love so they just fuck...and while this song is like an anthem to our generation...maybe its also telling us to want more. Its ok to want more. Its ok to want to experience emotional love and not just sex in order to connect with someone else.

And perhaps realize that while we hide our desire to actually love in fucking people we don't, we are holding ourselves back from truly loving ourselves and someone else so that we can have both: Sex and Love

I first heard this song in the movie Lie With Me ...great film.

Hellogoodbye – Here (In Your Arms) Lyrics 17 years ago
Is this song so obvious? Is there another way to look at it?

whispers "hello, i miss you quite terribly"
i fell in love, in love with you suddenly
there's no place i could be but here in your arms
here, here in your arms
oh, in your arms

Could this song be about one lover trying to tell the other how much they care after the other one has walked away? Could this song an admission of feelings to try to stop the other from leaving? Perhaps thats just my interpretation?

Josh Kelley – Just Say The Word Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is just beautiful in its simplicity. When you are still holding onto feelings for someone but you know you can't do anything about them. You just keep holding onto them emotionally while knowing they've long forgotten you.

And all you want them to do is think of you. You want them to know you're still out there for them, should they ever realize that they want you too.

ugh this song makes my heart break.

Rachael Yamagata – I'll Find a Way Lyrics 17 years ago
WOW...i don't really think this is that straight-forward at all...I think there is much to be discussed about this song.

Its that inner emotion of yearning for someone yet at the same time knowing that you shouldn't...read the contradictions:
girl, you falling at his feet
isn't lovely or stunning today
wait for me
i'm alive when you're here with me, stay

You are almost disgusted with yourself for caring that much yet something inside can't control your thoughts of how much you want that person to be there.

This theme of uncertaintly is almost like the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other...the devil fantasizes of ways to being together but then your head takes over, or angel, and you know that before you do anything " the rain will bring me down."

GOD i'm right in the middle of this right now. Its almost become not even about him anymore and more about this inner battle of accepting the situation and choosing to move on...anyone else agree?

Dave Matthews Band – #41 Lyrics 17 years ago
In effort to keep the spirit of what this site should be about which is expressing what we feel these songs mean to us...I thought i'd offer my interpretation for what I would like to believe this song means or at least acknowledge what it means to me:

Coming to terms with wanting a second chance with someone you once were close with. Most likely, romantically. Everyone always says " Just give it time" but sometimes time can only make the inner turmoil worse and the regret grows so large it becomes overwhelming which I think Dave captures so perfectly..on one hand you want to move on but on the other all you want to do is get on your knees and beg for that person to take you back but perhaps its the person's pride that makes it hard to go back:
" Come and see
I swear by now I'm playing time
I against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance and while I'm
In the front
The play on time is won
But the difficulty is coming here "

And everyone is counseling you on how to move on and get over whatever remorse you are feeling you know what you want to do and you aren't interested in hearing others stories you are willing to make your own mistakes
"I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you to stay
But I'm coming to much more
Me"

So you do it...you go back. You walk back into their life and lay it on the line...
"All at once the ghosts come back
Reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
Remember when I used to play for
All of the loneliness that nobody
Notice now
I'm begging slow I'm coming here
Only waiting I wanted to stay
I wanted to play
I wanted to love you
I'm only this far
And only tomorrow leads my way

I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please, I wouldnt pass this by
I would take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why wont you ever be glad
It melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
why wont you run
In the rain and play
Let the tears splash all over you "

and then you wait...and you hope. I think the tears are almost like a reference to other person cleansing themselves from whatever hard feelings they are holding onto from the past so that they can move forward....hopefully together? and the music is so powerful it captures all of those feelings of tension, love, frustration, remorse, anxiety, and most of all hope. In the end I feel that is emotion that is the driving force behind this song. Hope.

Azure Ray – Rise Lyrics 17 years ago
To me this song is about someone dealing with the "shadow" or ghost of an ex. It can be emotionally draining:
"Crawling out of bed
I can’t stand your shadow its too heavy to lift"
Part of you just can't let go and you have some hope that you would almost take anything you could get from them:
"Maybe we’ll go for a ride
You said you’d take me nowhere I said that suits me just fine."

Perhaps the person broke up with someone cause they were afraid they didn't feel anything for them but it wasn't until they were gone did they realize just how much they really did care for them but its too late and now they're alone, unrequoited.
