Big Star – For You Lyrics 14 years ago
I can't believe I just discovered this song. It is so hauntingly beautiful. The strings, the breathy vocals, not to mention those lyrics. So sweet.

Franz Ferdinand – Twilight Omens Lyrics 15 years ago
These lyrics are so artfully clever. Just like their first album songs. It's about a guy obsessed with a girl he only met once.

The Magnetic Fields – Epitaph For My Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
Steve's voice is just so piercing even at his bassist. I love how clever the lyrics are. It's basically telling his ex-friend/lover that the relationship is completely over. You broke my heart. You're not even a friend to me any more. And life goes on. I move on, kind of thing. Lovely.

Electric Light Orchestra – One Summer Dream Lyrics 16 years ago
So I go,
Though it hurts me so.
I'm crying
For your love.

The beginning just brings tears to my eyes. I think of it as a superb lost love lyric. I love ELO. Such a gorgeous ephemeral song.

Muse – Falling Away with You Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about a guy who has broken up with a girl he truly loved (or she broke up with him). He remembers the good times. "can't remember when it was good" meaning that the break up has been very devastating recently so the good times were such a long time ago. Perhaps she never loved him because he said he "misunderstood" the happiness, which he thought was love.

"memories I will never find" obviously is about how they will never get back together. He wants to move on and accept that fact. But he couldn't because he can't let go of her, he's "falling away" with her. Forever. He thought his happiness with her will last forever, but it didn't. He's lost. He doesn't want to forget what they had, but at the same time, he is forgetting, those "memories i will never find." Those memories of true, blissful happiness.

Coldplay – Fix You Lyrics 16 years ago
The first two verses hit me like a rock. I've always been a Coldplay fan for years, and now my first break up with a man I thought I loved... but he didn't love me. And now when I listen to the song,

"When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?" really makes me start tearing up when I don't even want to waste any more tears over this man.

Oasis – Let There Be Love Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with the relationship part. To me, getting past my first love is like asking for the impossible, but this song really hit me. I thought I couldn't move on because he just didn't love me like I loved him. Especially:

"C'mon baby blue
Shake up your tired eyes
The world is waiting for you
May all your dreaming fill the empty sky"

My tired eyes are so swollen from crying so much, and I know that there are more opportunities for love.

"And if you don't let go it's gonna pass you by"

I love this line too... regretting and reminiscing won't get me anywhere... I need to let go of him and the good times so I can live my life.

Al Stewart – Modern Times Lyrics 16 years ago
When I listened to this song seriously for the first time, I suddenly paid attention to the lyrics and thought it was brilliant. It's very bittersweet; a friend reminiscing the good times but his friend just wants to forget. So the singer gives up in vain. It goes to show how relationships can change over time. The pain of remembering the good times!

The Kinks – A Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about the band about to break up, but before they do they should consider the consequences for their fans. In the end they decide that if they indeed need to break up they need to inevitably do so otherwise they would be just like their fans listening to their music, living a fantasy.

The Zombies – Hung Up On A Dream Lyrics 16 years ago
I really love the composition of this entire song. The piano, the vocals (are just dreamy!), and backing chorus... it all fits very well together.

I think the song is about the psychedelic era in general. A guy walks by, disillusioned, then comes across a new sound, a band who is playing beautiful music - like this song.

submissions
The Rolling Stones – Time Is On My Side Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is similar to Bread - It Don't Matter to Me (lyrically). Except Bread's song is depressing because he's letting her go and unsure if she is coming back, but he is willing to wait, so "time is on my side." Unlike Rolling Stones since the Stones's version has her coming back.

Electric Light Orchestra – Yours Truly, 2095 Lyrics 16 years ago
That's right on to what I think. The guy has found a new girlfriend who is a robot, but she does not love him and vice versa.

Electric Light Orchestra – Ticket to the Moon Lyrics 16 years ago
I like that analysis. Simply put, this is one of my favorite ELO songs. I think it's metaphorical for someone who is wistful of how things used to be, but due to change in events he had to leave his love behind. He wishes he didn't have to make that choice but he had already put the things in motion to go. I just love the metaphors in this song.

Overall very depressing.

Calexico – Black Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
I adore the dark noir of this song. Anyone recommend any other noir music? Love the strings! Has a lot of impact.

By the lyrics, I always thought it was about a crime someone else committed, and the police is chasing them. So "one man's close pursuit is another man's last chance" or "one man's righteousness (the law) is another man's long haul (jail)".

Another way I look at it is like the Mexico US border relations. An immigrant who is trying to cross the "county line". Also a chase. Just a very depressing song in general!

Wilco – You Are My Face Lyrics 17 years ago
shmellsea> I was looking all over for who sang that song when I saw that commercial. They obviously took the best line! I stumbled upon Wilco by chance by reading rave reviews, so I just had to give them a whirl. Now I can rest in peace. Wilco was featured in two VW commercials, if I recall.

Great vocals on that line. "I have no idea.."

Wilco – Company In My Back Lyrics 17 years ago
I think "company in my back" means that he is about to be crushed, like a "steady crushing hand".

What this song really is about, if taken literally, is that the fly is willing to sacrifice its life to be with the woman. Taken out of context, the singer is willing to die for this woman he loves.

The first Wilco song I like!

The Kinks – Days Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics are meant as a break up song, but I can see this work very very well for someone who passed away. I think when he says "you took my life" it's as if his previous love took his breath away. Another great Kinks song!!

The Byrds – I Knew I'd Want You Lyrics 17 years ago
No one commented on this yet? Gosh, it's one of the better tracks on Mr. Tambourine man. The harmonies, the simplistic instrumentals, and the romantic lyrics... ah, just great! The first line is by far the best.

The Kinks – Shangri-La Lyrics 17 years ago
Great song with great climax. I don't think it would be fair to compare it with Stairway because they're both totally different and the themes are totally different. It seems like Ray wrote a lot of songs about the mediocrity of middle class, and it's so true. I love the song.

Bee Gees – Odessa (City on the Black Sea) Lyrics 17 years ago
No one commented on the awesomeness of this song? This is probably one of the Bee Gee's most overlooked albums (self titled).

It's about a man who is longing for his wife (Odessa), and he is lost at sea. Kind of reminiscent of Bowie's Space Oddity or the Bee Gees New York Mining Disaster. What's worse, his wife left him for someone else (the vicar). Pretty sad! And I absolutely love the instrumentals and Robin's voice.

Vanilla Fudge – You Keep Me Hangin' On Lyrics 17 years ago
Awesome cover of the Supremes! I love this version more. It has more emotion and beat to it. I can really feel the hurt. The music video is so hilarious; everyone should check it out on youtube.

The Kinks – Celluloid Heroes Lyrics 17 years ago
I adore this song. I think the more mature Kinks songs are always their best. Ray's wavering voice and the awesome instruments near the end are so gratifying.

I see it as a normal person who wishes they were in movies (I wish my life was a nonstop Hollywood movie show), but in reality the people who ARE in movies are just like normal people himself. So it's ironic. Not only that, but these normal actors/actresses have worked really hard to achieve their stardom that the only way they are remembered to the world (never really die) is through their movies and their star on the boulevard. Pretty sad!! Saying that they (never feel any pain) is also ironic because they do - they are normal like us.

Love the song.

Deep Purple – Hey Joe Lyrics 17 years ago
It probably does because in the song it mentions Mexico. So they probably want a Spanish influenced song?

I love this version, although the introduction could be cut shorter. The vocals are impressive, right from the "Hey.. Joe..". Awesome song.

The Beatles – Help! Lyrics 17 years ago
I love Deep Purple's cover of this song on their first album. If you could get your hands on it, it's so worth the $1 I paid for the vinyl record! It also has Hey Joe and Hush covers. As for their cover, it's a calm rendition with a blasting jazz organ solo. It sounds a lot more desperate and melancholy.

As for the song itself, love it.

The Moody Blues – The Actor Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree. I think this song is about how all your life you are just like an actor on the stage, like Shakespeare "All the world's a stage". But the latter half is very much like the romanticist Hayward is, describing his loneliness without his love. Perhaps the person he sings about is wishing to break free of this act and be with who he loves.

Deep Purple – Hush Lyrics 17 years ago
Great pumped up rendition of Joe South's original!! If you love this version, check out the original, because although I heard Deep Purple's version first, South's version clearly blew me away. The rawness was so awesome. Great song, and I also love the tie in with the Beatles (nanana's are from "A Day in the Life"). Good song.

The Moody Blues – My Song Lyrics 17 years ago
I would have to disagree with your dad's advice! The answer lies in music itself, not in just three bands (Supertramp...? Why?). So many bands have fantastic lyrics (like Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Love, etc.....), so my advice is to open yourself up and listen to everything. I'm 20, so I know it's kind of overwhelming when you have the internet and all this music around you for listening.

Moody Blues just friggin kicks so much ass; I love this song and the band. Great lyrics and instrumentals, as usual, and Hayward's voice always shines for me. I love their instrumentals so much!

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Hey Joe Lyrics 17 years ago
No no no, let's get this straight: Hey Joe is written by Billy Roberts. Just wiki it or allmusic it. This song has been covered by so many artists, but Hendrix is probably the most well known. Although, not my favorite cover (Deep Purple takes it for me with the amateur intro), it still does the lyrics justice. I would love to get my hands on the Music Machine cover. Love Hendrix!

Roxy Music – Ladytron Lyrics 17 years ago
I really love the instrumental intro... very ephemeral!

Electric Light Orchestra – Mister Kingdom Lyrics 17 years ago
Is it just me, or does this song remind anyone of The Beatles - Across the Universe? Gotta love the Shakespeare "To sleep, perchance to dream". ELO f'in rocks.

The Cure – Jupiter Crash Lyrics 17 years ago
That was a good interpretation. Mine is that he is comparing his relationship with her to everything ephemeral. She is a "star", something heavenly, and he is Jupiter. And her being with him is like pulling herself lower. When they are together, she is not longer a star. And then she eventually leaves him, so "so much for gravity" because him being Jupiter, having that pull won't help him now that she left him.

The Cure – In Between Days Lyrics 17 years ago
50 sec intros are quite common in The Cure songs. I actually really like them because it has this sort of build up.

As for the chorus, I think he means that

"And I know I was wrong
When I said it was true
That it couldn't be me and be her"

This means that before he put the blame on his ex when in fact the fault lies in him. He admits his wrong.

"Inbetween without you
Without you"

He is talking about the time in between relationships. The time without her, that is.

The Turtles – You Showed Me Lyrics 17 years ago
Maybe it's not about a girl. Maybe it's about his relationship with the drug. I don't know, I never actually analyzed this song when I hear it.

The Moody Blues – Forever Autumn Lyrics 17 years ago
Hayward's voice is so perfect for this song! Wayne's lyrics, as well, is also very well written, relating how the singer cannot simply enjoy autumn without his love, or how he wishes it was autumn forever. Heartbreaking!

The Moody Blues – December Snow Lyrics 17 years ago
This song instantly had me melt. Absolutely gorgeous! I'm typing this as I hear it my first time... I can't believe the lead's voice is this gorgeous. LOVELY. The lyrics are stunningly poetic, relating a breakup as a metaphor for the loneliness and coldness of winter.

The Rolling Stones – Angie Lyrics 17 years ago
