@[joeyvirrueta:10213] I was actually incorrect Joey, but thanks. I spoke with Dustin after one of his concerts many years ago and he told me this song comes from an idea out of a book by G.K. Chesterton called "Orthodoxy." I personally disagree with some of the book, but it comes from a mention of a guy who loves a city so much he'd burn it down to keep it from evil. |

| anyone who wants to know what this song's about, read CS Lewis' essay "Abolition of Man"(you can google it to read free online)--it's a bit wordy, especially the first chapters--but once you get through it, it begins to make sense. I personally don't like how Lewis took a neutral stance, but it's still a solid truth behind the view on subjectivity/objectivity and the need for it... without God, one could not know anything, as Christ said "I am the way, the truth, and the light"---if it weren't for truth, you wouldn't know error---if it weren't for light, you wouldn't know darkness... Ah nevermind, I was wrong. I got to speak with Dustin the other night after a concert and asked him what this song was about. He said it has to do with CK Chesterton(who influenced C.S. Lewis), and something to do with the Orthodoxy(he told me to read into it, I haven't yet). But it has to do with loving your city so much, as in the very foundation of it, no matter lets say you love it for it's great bowling alley and eating places--that if the city ever started to go downhill and those things disappeared and were replaced with bad things(bars, crime, clubs etc), you wouldn't abandon the city but you love it so much you would burn it down to get back to the foundation and rebuild. He compared it to how God loves us, so much so that God is willing to burn/break us down and rebuild us from the inside out... God Bless |

I have a feeling this is about Isaiah 9... The city of Samaria(and Assyria) was threatened to be burned down, and the people said they were going to rebuild with "better" bricks... their arrogance thinking they could build better and it would undo God's judgment. This song is about Christ before His death... in the Garden of Gethsemane. "Scarlet" is the color of blood over you, your sins. It's a reference in Jeremiah. From what I can tell, Brooke is describing what Jesus was going through while praying in the garden, the agony and pain of what He was about to go through... the blood sweating from His brow, His pure "timid and fragile" honesty of asking His Father if there is any other way, and how He was about to "go" where no one could follow right then. Luke 22:40 - 46 "And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. " This is just my interpretation, but if I were thinking as Christ in the garden... these would probably describe my thoughts. |

It's about American Idol(and those types of shows) about people selling out and becoming instantly famous and giving up their true dreams/lives in place of it. "Get Some" refers to getting a piece of the action(or 5 minutes of fame) and the black-out refers to when he drank too much and passed out on a lawn and had a dream as someone said above... and yes, this is the right answer, why? because I met Chevelle and got to talk with them for 20 minutes or so and this was the first song I asked Pete about, it was a few years ago... and yeah I asked him if it was about sex initially hah |

no... this whole song is about society, and the anguish of people not trying to better themselves because they forget, that people don't wish to take responsibility, especially listen to the first few lines... if you could walk into anyones houses and steal their possessions w/o consequences...would you? and especially if you knew if YOU didn't steal their stuff, they would go and steal your stuff... the line about babies being killed is about how far people take it.. that if you're going to rip off people, you may as well kill children.. no consequence, other than killing yourself inside. the handcuffs part is about how quickly we judge others and wish them to be killed and screwed in jail, taunting them, saying we'd arrest and beat them if we caught them ourselves....but at the same time, many of us, would do the same if we knew no consequence. so the question is, are people really trying to better themselves? or is the world trying to turn into a place without consequence...total chaos, if you truly open your mind, is the enemy of life. |

somewhat agreed with barclay54... this song describes my life now more than I ever thought it would. not that i feel much pain... anyways, to me its about a guy being with someone, and she broke him in the end of the relationship...with my story, with her pushing me away and not even caring one bit even though I was head over fckin heels in love with her... ...and then after the last time he finally gave up on her, he took that part of her that he hated...the not caring part of her, and made it a part of him over time.... it's not her fault...it's mine...but it's ruining my relationships now...and I can't find a way to change it. |

I love this song, and even years later people are still talking about it, awesome lyrics, great melody to match the mood. As most of you have said, it's about a boy losing his virginity to "grow up" to a girl who is more experienced, she wants sex...he wants a relationship. To me, I've had sex both ways, and if it's not with someone you really care about(or love), then it means nothing. The video..is much different, yes as most of you noticed it's not about the above "story" told in the lyrics. The video portrays the fact that "you're never really the one in control." Jesse goes through the video thinking he's the one in control as everyone follows his every action and word, but in the end...if you watch, jesse notices his hand not follow the action he wanted it to do, and you see the shadowy character in the back who is the one REALLY in control, and then he makes the "slit throat" motion...hmmm...die young and save yourself. |
