Little Big Town – Boondocks Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not a big fan of today's country, but this song really appealed to me. I like the fact that has a slightly grittier feeling that most current contemporary country, and more than anything I love the lyrics. I'm proud of where I came from, and I like this song because it vocalized that.

Train – Drops of Jupiter Lyrics 17 years ago
From wikipedia.org:

"Due to its unique and enigmatic lyrics, the meaning of [Drops of Jupiter] has been the subject of speculation since its release. Lead singer Pat Monahan has stated that the song was inspired by the death of his mother, and that the opening lines came to him in a dream. The song, which started as a song about his mother, has evolved into a love song, according to Monahan in 2006."

Bruce Springsteen – The Rising Lyrics 17 years ago
I definitely see this song as a 9/11 song; the lyrics just 'fit' with what happened. My interpretation is essentially along the lines of what some others have posted.

Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of 9-11-01. I'll never forget it; where I was, how I felt, how utterly oblivious I was the previous night to the hell I'd wake up and watch on TV the next day. No matter what, I will always remember that.

Bruce Springsteen – You're Missing Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about loss, as others have stated. It describes what you feel when you lose someone, and it was one of the first songs I ever heard that truly stirred me emotionally.

I remember hearing Bruce perform this on Saturday Night Live; to this day, I cannot recall seeing a more moving musical performance on TV. It was absolutely amazing.

American Minor – Buffalo Creek Lyrics 17 years ago
This song was written about the Buffalo Creek disaster.

From wikipedia.org:
"The Buffalo Creek Flood was an accident that occurred on February 26, 1972 when a coal slurry impoundment dam built on a hillside in Logan County, West Virginia by the Pittston Coal Company burst. The resulting flood unleashed approximately 132 million gallons (500 000 000 L) of black waste water upon the residents of 16 coal mining communities in Buffalo Creek Hollow. Out of a population of 5,000 people, 125 people were killed, 1,121 were injured, and over 4,000 were left homeless. The incident completely levelled the town of Saunders, W.V. (the current town of Saunders is not the same one that once was located in Buffalo Creek)."

John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 17 years ago
Okay, first let me say that I really do understand (and sometimes even agree with) a lot of the criticism aimed at this song.

However, I also feel a connection to it that allows me to look past its flaws, because I wish my father would have taken his advice. My father and I have always had a somewhat strained - and certainly difficult - relationship. The times that I can remember being "Daddy's Little Girl" make me so happy, but then I remember the times where we would have horrible arguments. I've found now that I have some difficulties in relationships with guys, and that they stem a lot from what happened with my father.

The general emphasis of this song is true, although it should really go without saying: Fathers should be good to their daughters (mothers, too). A girl's father has a big influence in her future relationships. In my experience, if a girl couldn't trust her father, she'll likely have a hard time trusting her partner. Mothers also obviously have a big influence in their daughters lives as well; however, it is the parent of the opposite sex that has the greater influence in a child's future romantic relationships.

The Beach Boys – Wouldn't It Be Nice Lyrics 17 years ago
I really like this song. And as someone who is remaining abstinent until marriage, I can identify with mongeese's interpretation. Of course, it's great for young love in general, regardless of whether you're waiting to have sex until marriage. It fits anyone who is old enough to be in love, but too young to get married.

Plus, it's really fun to sing with!

Absolutely beautiful song. Indeed, McCartney was right.

The Beatles – Let It Be Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of the few songs that can get me choked up from the very first words. Very emotional, very beautiful song. The fact that my mother - like Paul's - is named Mary makes it even more personal, especially since she (my mother) was ill for a year and we didn't think she would make it. She's healthy now, but I've moved on to college, so I'm 3,000 miles away from a woman I love and respect more than anyone else. I don't usually admit it, but I really miss her.

Again, a very beautiful and wonderful song, but a bit hard for me to listen to.

Jet – All You Have to Do Lyrics 17 years ago
The chorus of this song reminds me a whole lot of Pink Floyd.

I really don't have a good idea as to what this song is about. Just as a guess, I'd have to say that it's about not being able to control anything, and just moving along with life. But, I'm really not sure.

The Killers – Mr. Brightside Lyrics 17 years ago
Here's one of my (many) interpretations of this song, with a possible variant at the bottom:

"I'm coming out of my cage
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all"

He knows his girl is cheating on him, but he's trying to play cool ("gotta be down"), because he still wants her ("Because I want it all") and doesn't want to lose her, even if it means putting up with her affair. Probably he thinks that she'll eventually end the affair and come back to just him. "I've been doing just fine" - I think he's just trying to act fine, but on the inside it's actually killing him.

"It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss"

Now he's questioning himself. His girl kissed another man ("It started out with a kiss"), but it turned into something more - the affair ("How did it end up like this?") and maybe he can't understand how ("It was only a kiss").

"Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a cab"

Perhaps they've just been together (sexual or just spending time together), but now she's going to see the other man - the one she's cheating on him with.

"While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head
But she’s touching his—chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, let me go"

I have two theories for this: either A) he's actually followed her and is watching her affair (perhaps signified b y "I just can't look" later in the song), or B) he's just imagining what she's doing with the other man (perhaps signified by "And it's all in my head"). Regardless, he can't stand her with another man ("Let me go").

"I just can’t look its killing me"

Again, he can't stand it.

"Jealousy, turning saints into the sea"

He's jealous, of course, and it's affecting him.

"Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis"

She's coming up with excuses ('alibis'), but he knows better. "Sick lullabies" may be other things she's telling him that he knows not to believe (maybe telling him she loves him, or something to that effect), or it may be the visions he gets at night of her with another man.

"But it’s just the price I pay"

Again, he's putting up with it to be with her.

So, maybe, it's someone who's wanting to keep a relationship with a girl, even though she's cheating. He's putting up with the pain and anger and jealousy just to be with her, even if it's only part of the time, because he's hoping that it'll eventually be only him (because he's "Mr. Brightside").

However, this meaning could easily be flipped: he's the one that the girl's having an affair with, and he's hoping she'll leave her significant other for him. You can reread it, and by only making a few slight changes to the interpretation, this could also make a lot of sense.

Paul McCartney – Maybe I'm Amazed Lyrics 17 years ago
This could quite possibly be my favorite song of all time. It's a great song about love, without being a cheesy love song.

The lyrics are great, the music is fantastic, and Paul's singing is at it's best. It's absolutely unbelievable in concert.

I still get chills when I hear it.

I have to say that some of the lyrics in this song really remind me of my mom, whom I've always greatly respected and admired. I always wanted to be just like her, and, to a degree, I still do.

It still hits me every now and then just how much I admire her and want to be like her in so many ways.

Norah Jones – The Long Day Is Over Lyrics 17 years ago
I used to listen to this song all the time a couple years ago, but completely forgot about it until today. I had a really long day, and all of a sudden starting humming this song - I didn't even realize at first. It definitely calmed me down; I think I'll be listening to it a lot more now.

The Rolling Stones – You Can't Always Get What You Want Lyrics 17 years ago
Personally, this is ony of my favorite songs. The boy's choir at the beginning followed by the acoustic song, and the way the song brings in more instruments as the song goes on is fantastic. The lyrics are really interesting as well.

I listen to this song whenever I'm depressed, and it's jokingly become my mantra for the football team I root for - I listen to this song after a loss.

This is one of the few songs ever that I could never get tired of listening to. The lyrics are superb, the music is beautiful, and the singing is incomparable. There's no song quite like this; it's sexy, romantic, and gives me goosebumps every single time I hear it.

Marc Broussard – Home Lyrics 17 years ago
An interesting tidbit. The "straight from the water" part of 'Home' seems to be derived from a slave spiritual (I think it may have been used in the Underground Railroad) with similar rhythm and melody. The spiritual went:

Wade in the water
Wade in the water, children
Wade in the water
God's gonna trouble the water

The first three lines of the spiritual are very similar to the "Straight from the water" sung in 'Home."

Just thought this was interesting.

Marc Broussard – Home Lyrics 17 years ago
Songs like this don't come around too often.

Broussard sings 'Home' with a sensationally soulful voice that's not often heard these days - and it's even more amazing after finding out the singer is little-known white kid in his early 20s. His performance gives the impression that he has experience beyond his years, and shows that he has the ability to tell a great story through lyrics. Add that to the combination of soul, rock, blues, spirituals, and essences of many other styles and you have a song that truly unique in today's music scene - and one that's absolutely fantastic.

Most musicians feel lucky to create one song of this quality in their entire career - Marc's done it on his second album.

I first heard this song when Marc performed it on Late Night with Conan O' Brien, and I've been playing it on repeat ever since.

Aqualung – Brighter than Sunshine Lyrics 17 years ago
I first heard this song a while back, when it was performed on one of the late night shows (I'm thinking Carson Daly, but I'm not sure). I thought the lyrics were really great, but the music was even better. The instruments give it such a great feelings - the piano and strings especially. All in all, it's a really good song about love, without being overly cheesy.

John Hiatt – Have a Little Faith in Me Lyrics 17 years ago
This song struck me from the first note. It's a beautiful song; it's so full even though there is only a piano and a voice. I love the piano, it's not overly complicated, but sets the perfect tone. The lyrics aren't sappy, nor are they overly complex, but they convey the feeling and emotion of the song superbly.

All you have to do is have a little faith.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Carry On Lyrics 17 years ago
I honestly hadn't heard this song until recently, when I heard it in a movie trailer. It's being used in the trailer for "We Are Marshall," a movie based on the true story of a college that loses most of its football team, coaches, and others when the team plane crashes and kills everyone on board. The movie focuses on the controversy around the rebuilding of the team, but it also focuses on how the entire community came together. The line "One morning I woke up and I knew that you were gone," is very fitting for the story, and the whole song actually fits quite well.

All in all, it's a beautiful song, and one that now has a very deep and personal meaning to me.

Five for Fighting – 100 Years Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song covers the various stages of life very well. To me, the song progresses like this:

First, you're 15; you're "caught in between 10 and 20." You're not an adult, but you're certainly not a kid either. You're just dreaming about the girl/guy, and you just want to be with them

Then, you're 22. You've got your girl/guy, and you're going wild over them; "[you're] on fire, making [your] way back from Mars."

After that, you're 33. You're not just an individual - you've become a "we" because you've got a spouse and a developing family. Things are starting to change ("33 you're on your way" to me means that you're starting to realize that you're getting older; time is going by quicker).

And then, you're 45. You look back and see that so much of your life has already passed; you're crashing into a mid-life crisis. Again, things have changed.

And in what seems like the blink of an eye, 67 is gone. Your life is moving on; you're getting older even though you may not want to. You can't control it.

And then, you're 99. You're slipping away, and you're fifteen again in the sense that you're again dreaming about the girl/guy you want to be with - your spouse. But they're gone, they've passed on. And just like when you were 15, you just want to be with them.

The moral of this song, to me, is to live life to the fullest, to try to realize that time is going to fly by even if you have the desire to just be older. Treasure life, and enjoy every part of it, because it'll pass you in the blink of an eye.
