Aerosmith – Jailbait Lyrics 13 years ago
I receive the vague notion that this song is about jailbait. Which, of course, otherwise implies a man sleeping with a girl younger than 18. Young girl is known as jailbait as a bit of a slang term for the relationship.

The fact that he himself is referring to his little friend as jailbait as a term of endearment (we'll assume, considering the way he laughs his way joyfully through the chorus) is sort of the ultimate condescention and lack of respect, implying he is totally and completely using the teen (let's hope she's a teen).

Don't get me wrong.
Aerosmith had their moments of musical greatness.
This certainly is not one of them.

Personally I felt the whole creepy child abuse feeling when I first heard the song...it's too sinister and strange to be simply talking about direct parent conflict (only). It's too layered.

It's part of the Eclipse soundtrack if that makes any difference, Hilary. The song's a little repetitive for me...but meh.

Brandon Flowers – On The Floor Lyrics 13 years ago
First off, I love the build up of this song. It starts off light in the intro, and subtly, in that Brandon Flowers way of things, ends up feeling very, very heavy towards the middle...with touches of whimsicality in between to remind us this is a song about redemption. Then the chorus and hugeness at the end...well, I daresay that speaks for itself.

I think this is about a guy who had previously been very proud, but now he's brought to the floor, begging for forgiveness or fulfillment from God.

I got the pride part out of the way he emphasized “I go unnoticed” as if he’s not used to going unnoticed or being by himself. He’s always the center of attention or has lots of people around that love him. Being unnoticed in itself is almost a humbling experience for him.

“Letting me go.” Thinking outside himself. Realizing he’s been self centered. Realizing there’s more out there and he’s ready to let his focus shift to other things.

“I feel a calm, come over me, on the floor.”

Even though this is different and maybe unnerving this change, he knows it’s a good thing and he’s not worried about it. He’s on the floor…this isn’t normal. But it needs to happen.

“On the floor where the rats all come away clean.”

Double meaning, here, obviously. 1st: Literal–He’s lying on the floor with rats…you can’t get much lower than that, but he’s bonding with a Saviour that he feels unworthy next to. 2nd: Metaphorical–He is the rat…a selfish little high-minded creature that is just now realizing how ugly he is…but he’s going to come away clean with humility and grace whilst meeting with God.

“They’re on the floor
Where the children all stamped and screamed
Straight out the door.”

Metaphor shifts from rats to bratty children. They don’t know a whole lot, but they are stubborn and they’ll do all they can to get away from their parents rules…much like Brandon/narrator had done with God. Or, alternately, this could be some allusion to childlike innocence and ignorance.

“Well I find myself on the floor
Begging please.”

On the floor, with the rats, begging please. Strong words. Once again, an emphasis on the revelation of humility the man is having.

“When the lights go down in the city
Something is roaring
I find myself
Waiting to believe.”

This could be him witnessing the roar of traffic, an accident, something bad, etc. that leaves him wanting something more than the city. One of those ‘at the end of the day all you want is…’ statements. WAITING to believe is strange, though. This could imply he never meant to ‘get religion’–unless it was when he was older.

The following turn of events kill the waiting, though because Brandon belts out another impassioned round of ‘on the floor’

Except this time it’s accompanied by slightly nicer imagery ‘where the mice call shots’ and ‘where the crickets sing their symphony’. This could be nothing, or it could add to the goodness of the inspiration/relief the man is feeling.

“On the floor
Facing the things I’ve done
Here on the floor
Where the years have gathered and run
That’s where I’ll be
And I find myself on my knees
Begging please”

Apparently this guy has a lot to get off his chest and it feels really good to give it up to the one who can exchange pride for humility and condemnation for grace. “Begging please” could be for forgiveness, acceptance, grace, another chance…etc.

And that’s my sum up. I’m not exactly Mormon, but I do have a relationship with God and it’s really cool to me that Brandon had the inspiration for this song.

Any thoughts?

Brandon Flowers – Crossfire Lyrics 13 years ago
Mkay I got something quite different, from the get go. I think this could work with Brandon Flower's previous songs because we all have heard by now he doesn't take sleeping around lightly ('Mr. Brightside', 'Joyride', 'I Can't Stay' to name a few...not to mention all the other depressed hooker and stripper songs they do)

Sure, it's about a couple...I got the gist that the conflict was the purity of the relationship. Like they're trying to maintain a relationship without sex but it's really hard and they find themselves compromising emotional/spiritual values.

"Let me inside, no cause for alarm."
They're going to have a date night at her house and they're going to keep it casual and fun.

"I promise tonight not to do no harm. Yeah, I promise you, babe."
They're putting themselves in compromising situations, but they assume they'll keep it in check.

"We're caught up in the crossfire of Heaven and Hell"
Apparently they're not as in control as they thought they'd be. Fairly obvious to me. Heaven is the beauty of the relationship, not wanting to spoil it with sex too early, loving each other, ethics, purity, etc. While Hell is the opposite-giving in to what they want at the moment even though it might not be good for the relationship in the long run. Plus, assuming they're not married could bring a new layer of moral chaos.

"We're searching for shelter"
I take this line as in they are well intentioned, they're in it together-but they're having a hard time doing what they feel is right.

"Lay your body down."
Whatever 'lay your body down' physically implies, it is the victory of one side. Laying down could be sex, in which 'Hell' won, or it could be snuggling cutely. Aka Heaven won.

Let's assume that chorus meant Heaven won, considering the next verse is pretty dang confident.

"Tell the devil that he can go back from where he came
His fiery arrows drew their bead in vein
And when the hardest part is over we'll be here"

I take it as they made it through the night without having sex even though he came over late at night and it was chancey ("the hardest part is over"). But they beat the devil and he can go to Hell for all they care because they're in it to win it. ("We're still here.")

"And our dreams will break the boundaries of our fear."

That's a really powerful line, no matter what the song directly means. In this context, it couuld mean that they're more determined than ever to do the relationship the right way. No matter what their fears are of themselves and their physical relationship. Their 'dream' of having a pure relationship is worth it.

Anwho. Just my first impression when I heard the line 'I won't do any harm tonight' and then later the Heaven and Hell concept along with the entire comaradery he feels with this girl seems to add up to me. I really love this song--keep it going, Brandon.

I laughed quite hard at this a second ago because first of all it's hilarious xD

Secondly it's basically the first impression I had of the song too. A bright tiger out of The Jungle Book bounding across hills.

I mean, I know Brandon well enough to know the lyrics mean more than that...but still ;D

The Killers – Tranquilize Lyrics 13 years ago
This song will be the death of me x_x

I did a freaking English paper analyzing this song, and while my theory of the meaning has proof, it's still not guaranteed that I'm right...I did go with the whole politics/violence/culture thing, by the way.

They're just too smart. Every single one of these theories could fit perfectly. That's what makes a well written song.

And what makes it even BETTER is the fact that even though we don't know what the hell they're talking about sometimes or how it connects, it STILL gives us the shivers and is rated in the top 5 of our Killers songs and makes us realize the depth of things.

And that's all I have to say about that.

If you can, stick to your Spanish ballads, Enrique. Because you're obviously not being any 'baby's hero'.

The Killers – Midnight Show Lyrics 13 years ago
Eh...only one person mentioned this so far, but individually, my first impression of the song was about a serial rapist.

The first verse the guy date-raped a girl.

The second verse could imply he feels guilty for what he's doing, but he won't stop what he's doing. "I know there's a hope there's too many people trying to help me cope-you've got a real short skirt I wanna look up", etc.

Third verse (maybe this is a stretch) he finds a girl who maybe he could be in a relationship with. He still wants her to stay with him. "Promise me you'll stay and fix these things I've hurt."

Either her, or one of the other girls he raped commits suicide by drowning herself. "Oh crashing tide can't hide a guilty girl."

That's the main line that keeps me from thinking it's about a murder.
I dunno. It's kind of a screwed up song, if that's what it means.

In context with Murder series though, it makes sense that it's about murder.

Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the answer is in the part of the song that is most emphasized. "She's still too young..." "What I am to you is not real/you do not need" "Volcanoes melt you/me down". I think the real conflict in here is that delicate topic of a man that cares for a younger girl. They have something special, but the both of them agree something isn't right. Judging by the tone, anyway.

I'm not such a fan of the OC, but this song is simply fantastic. I personally take it as one of those grim reality songs. Really symbolic but in your face at the same time. Really awesome to fall asleep to btw.

I can picture someone making a documentary music video of like, factory workers or something in China or sweatshops to this song. Idk. Maybe I'm just weird like that...

Kamelot – Elizabeth Part 2 - Requiem For The Innocent Lyrics 16 years ago
This is the sequel, so to say, of the first song Elizabeth I. Mirror Mirror. It's a harder paced song about the niece of the king of Poland, Elizabeth Bathury who believed that the murder of young virgins would keep her young forever. Well, since the first song, she has lost her innocence and is still obsessed with killing. The follow-up to this song explains better.

Five for Fighting – The Riddle Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, think about it.

Well son why you gotta sing that tune?
Catch a Dylan song or an eclipse of the moon
Let an angel swing and make you swoon
And you will see, you will see.

Then later. . .

The batter swings [...let an angel swing]
And the summer flies
As I look into my angel's eyes [l...let an angel swing and make you swoon]
A song plays on [...catch a Dylan song]
While the moon is hiding over me [...or an eclipse of the moon]

This piece right here really touched me, because it's like he really took to heart what his dad (or whoever) advised. He learned to live life to the fullest, taking advantage of the good things in life instead of worrying what the future would hold, because theoretically the future never comes. The answer to the 'riddle' has been said many times on here--it's about living life, discovering yourself, and learning to LET GO of dumb stuff. Cheerio!

It applies to me as a High School song--kids these days (and yeah, I'm one of 'em).

We've never been so many but we've never been so alone.

Everybody's got their own problems that they couldn't expect anyone else to understand, and admittedly, they probably wouldn't. Or wouldn't know how to cope with them the way we do.

One step forward makin' two steps back. Now isn't that so. . .right? Try to get somewhere and you end up gettin' nowhere. And counts for nothing. I've got a lot to say about this song, but I'll keep it for another time.

Sullivan – Hey, I'm A Ghost Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeppers. I think it's about a girl that feels okay only when her jerk boyfriend is away. He's abusive and has ruined her self image. Charming huh? Still, there's a certain sense of pride in this girl. You have to wonder if this was just thought-inspired, or pertaining to a specific incident.
